In this thesis we cover Late Antique rural villas in the Marche region. In the first chapter of this
master dissertation we put the phenomenon villa into a broader spatial and historical context
and provide a synthesis of the still ongoing debate on the decline of the Roman villa.
In the second chapter all available information on Roman villas in the Marche region dating
between the 3rd century and the 8th century A.D. is collected. Our method comprises the study
of published and unpublished sources as well as a number of preliminary results from the
Potenza Valley Survey Project conducted in 2012 and 2013.
By means of comparative study the distinctive features of the Late Antique villa from the
Marche region are discussed allowing us to identify the common elements with other regions.
These results are meant to contribute to the development of a regional synthesis, which is the
role of archaeological research in the future.
