This conceptual paper aims to develop a comprehensive framework on the key factors influencing th... more This conceptual paper aims to develop a comprehensive framework on the key factors influencing the financing growth in Islamic banks and loan growth in conventional banks in Malaysia. This is due to the crucial role of financing or loan growth in contributing significantly to bank income and fostering the expansion of a country's economic growth. Additionally, there exists a research gap on financing or loan growth, particularly Islamic banks financing growth in Malaysia. Study on the key factors influencing financing or loan growth is also being notably limited in developing countries compared to their developed counterparts, reflecting differences in the developmental stages of banking systems. Thus, Malaysian banking system has been chosen for the study. The study proposes the use of panel data analysis, utilising data from 16 Islamic banks and 26 conventional banks in Malaysia spanning from 2007 to 2020 (14 years). The internal factors to be investigated in this study include Impaired Financing or Non-Performing Loan, Bank Size, Liquidity, Capital, and Deposit Growth, while Inflation, GDP, Dummy Government Policy, and Overnight Policy Rate will be examined as external factors. The findings from this future research are expected to give valuable insight for bankers and regulators, enabling informed actions aimed at enhancing financing or loan growth. This may involve refining credit management practices and ensuring operational enhancements, particularly within Islamic banks, for future improvements.

Wind-induced loads and motions play a critical role in designing tall buildings and their lateral... more Wind-induced loads and motions play a critical role in designing tall buildings and their lateral structural systems. Building configuration represented by its outer shape is a key parameter in determining these loads and structural responses. However, contemporary architecture trends towards creating taller buildings with more complex geometrical shapes to offer unique designs that become a signature on the map of the world. As a result, evaluating wind-induced motions on such structures becomes more challenging to be evaluated and predicted. This paper presents a computational performance-based aerodynamic optimization with minor imposed modifications that have little to no impact on architectural and structural design intent. The developed tool aims to assist both architects and engineers to seek a sustainable optimal design decision at the early stage of design by employing different computational technological tools in an automated manner. A computational optimization methodology consisting of a computational fluid dynamic coupled with finite element analysis and embedded within a radial basis function surrogate model is proposed to mitigate wind-induced loads on tall buildings. In addition, a numerical example implementing the proposed methodology on selected case study is presented and discussed. The proposed approach was able to achieve a minimization of 13.83% and 23.12% for along-wind and across-wind loads, respectively, which is translated to a reduction in structural response by 12.95% and 14.31% in maximum deflection for along-wind and across-wind directions, respectively.

In order to develop the system, a comprehensive literature review and exploratory case studies were conducted to investigate current practices, problems, implementation of ICT and potential use of emerging technologies (such as RFID and wireless technologies) in overcoming the logistical difficulties associated with materials management. An initial assessment revealed that there is a potential to improve the tracking and management of materials using modern ICT, thus will enhance the operational efficiency of the project delivery process. Moreover, sophisticated technologies such as wireless systems and tagging are not generally used to overcome human error in materials identification and the space constraints inherent in many projects. This paper concludes the finding from case studies for developing a real-time materials tracking framework to support construction professional in handling materials more effectively.

Tall building performance is increasingly being a topic of considerable interest and research as the built environment becomes more concerned about sustainability. However, contemporary architecture is characterized by irregular shapes whose complexity is related to the fulfilment of several requirements architecturally and structurally, which compounds the challenges of effective collaboration between architects and engineers during early stage where design decisions heavily impact the overall performance of the building and its sustainability index. This paper presents an overview of the related previous studies to explore the key factors influencing the design outcome of complex tall buildings. Consequently, this research provides the groundwork for Multidisciplinary Computational Optimization (MCO) through proposing a methodological interactive design approach in which structure is integrated into the development of tall building forms. The method creates a synergy between generative and analytical tools, allowing for the parallel interaction of architectural and structural design consideration for a sustainable-effective design during conceptual stage.

Traditional materials management practice has been identified as a major issue in small and medium enterprises (SME) construction companies in most developing countries. Understandably, a key issue identified in the traditional practices is the lack of IT adoption in materials management practices. It is on this note, the paper seeks to explore factors affecting IT adoption for effective materials management in the Nigerian SME construction companies. Secondary sources such as past projects, journals and internet are the main source of data for this study. Data thus collected were studied and evaluated with the aim of articulating existing knowledge on how the materials management practice is carried out in SME construction projects. The significant findings of this study provides a generic overview of IT adoption within the context of SME and can assist SME and policy makers to towards formulating legislation for enhancing IT adoption in SME for an improvement of materials management practices towards sustainable projects performance and established profitable relationship with client’s and create competitive advantange.

A study was conducted to determine the impact of applying different sources of Mg, namely kieseri... more A study was conducted to determine the impact of applying different sources of Mg, namely kieserite, ground magnesium limestone (GML) and Mg-rich synthetic gypsum (MRSG) on an acid tropical soil, oil palm growth and production. Besides high amount of Mg and Ca, MRSG contains S. Exchangeable Ca in the untreated soil of the plantation was 0.64 cmol c kg -1 , but its critical level to sustain oil palm growth was 0.9 cmol c kg -1 . MRSG was applied in the plantation as Mg-fertilizer; however, since Ca is also a limiting nutrient, oil palm growth was correlated (r = 0.69) with Ca supplied by the MRSG. Mg needed to sustain oil palm production is normally supplied by kieserite. Its requirement can be met at a lower cost compared to that of the kieserite by using MRSG. Due to MRSG treatment, exchangeable Ca in the soil increased steadily to satisfy the requirement of oil palm for fruit bunches production. From the glasshouse and field study, it was observed that MRSG applied at 1.5 times the recommended rate gave results comparable to that of the kieserite. MRSG treatment resulted in the increase of soil pH to >5 that precipitated Al 3+ as inert Al-hydroxides, which eventually enhanced oil palm seedlings growth. Thus, MRSG can also replace GML to increase soil pH and satisfy the Ca and Mg requirement of oil palm. It can be concluded that MRSG has the potential to be used as a source of Mg as well as Ca for oil palm grown on acidic soil.

Therefore, facility managers are in a commanding position to maximise the potential of sustainability through operation, maintenance and upgrade leading to decommission and deconstruction. Sustainability endeavours in facility management practices will not only contribute to reducing energy consumption, waste and running costs, but also help improve organisational productivity, financial return and community standing of the organisation. At the forefront facing sustainability challenge, Facility manager should be empowered with the necessary knowledge and capabilities. However, literature studies show a gap between the level of awareness, specific knowledge and the necessary skills required to pursue sustainability in the profession. People capability is considered as the key enabler in managing the sustainability agenda as well as being central to the improvement of competency and innovation in an organization. This paper aims to identify the critical factors for enhancing people capabilities in promoting the sustainability agenda in facility management practices focusing in infrastructure project. Starting with a total of 23 critical factors identified from previous questionnaire survey, the authors conducted an interview with experts in facility management who involved directly with infrastructure project to assess the perceived importance of these factors. The findings reveal these 23 critical factors as significantly important to support sustainable facility management in infrastructure project. They form the basis of a mechanism framework developed to equip facility managers with the right knowledge, to continue education and training and to develop new mind-sets to enhance the implementation of sustainability measures in FM practices in infrastructure project.

In this paper, by means of computational fluid dynamics, a significant study has been made on the... more In this paper, by means of computational fluid dynamics, a significant study has been made on the effects of geometric parameters of wing with capability of flying efficiently and cost-effectively at supersonic condition. Multi-objective optimization has been performed for the aerodynamic shape optimization of the wing configuration. The three-dimensional wing shape defined by four design variables is optimized. For achieving the most desirable aerodynamic efficiency (lift-todrag ratio), Response Surface Method and Genetic Algorithm is utilized. To ensure the reliability of the solution and validating the numerical evaluation, flow around a delta wing is simulated and results are compared with credible numerical works. Furthermore, the particular design variables, which have serious effects on the objective functions, are found. Wing sweep angle along with aspect ratio has strong effects on the main outputs. Given that the current flow regime is supersonic, counteracting the negative effects of shock waves is one the most important design points. Among the studied parameters, leading edge sweep angle has the greatest impact on the main objectives of this research and it is the primary factor for delaying the formation of shock waves over the wing surface. Lift and drag coefficients, as primary objective functions, have higher sensitivity to changes in aspect ratio. By comparison to best geometry among initial cases, aerodynamic efficiency is increased by approximately 15% as a result of optimization study of this supersonic wing geometry.

It is a convenient concept for illumination of windowless parts of buildings. The light performance of this is highly dependent on the solar altitude due to the small inlet aperture. Placing the laser-cut panel (LCP) at the entrance aperture in light pipe system, will increase the light performance during low solar angle. This paper presents the results of light performance a 400mm diameter light pipe integrated with a laser-cut panel at entrance aperture as collector. For that reason, this research adopted an experimental approach to compare the light pipe performance via 1:10 scale model. Two scale models were built. LCP in the form of pyramids was fitted at the entrance aperture of light pipe in different tilted angle 40 0 and 47.5 0 . The system has been monitored 30 minutes interval with lux meter to evaluate the improvement light performance on a working plane for 6 days under good sky condition. The results of this experiment shows that LCP with 40 0 tilted angle performed better than 47.5 0 tilted angle. The light pipe with LCP as collector the minimum recommended illuminance by Malaysian Standard (MS) 1525:2007 can be achieved as early at 8am.

The construction industry embraces IBS for better construction quality with reduced failure risks and cost effectiveness. This method is highly supported by the Malaysian government through Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia. However, IBS demands workforce that is skilled enough to produce and install construction components either on-site or off-site. The workers are deemed to be knowledgeable in handling materials, methods, and tools for constructing structures like houses, buildings, highways and roads. In fact, workers involved in construction projects are often found with low knowledge, skills, and accustomed to conventional methods instead of IBS. This research aimed at determining factors that may contribute enhancing skilled worker requirements for improving the implementation of IBS construction projects in Malaysia. The questionnaires were used to collect data from contractors involved in IBS construction projects in Malaysia. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0 software was used to analyse the collected data. The results show that skilled labour with awareness of IBS implementation can handle and implement IBS projects properly. The results of this work revealed that the skilled workers also ensure the projects can be accomplished on time with better quality. The usage of foreign workforce can be minimized by encouraging local labours to participate in IBS as skilled workers, which enhances the market share of construction industry in Malaysian economy. This research provides valuable information regarding the importance of skilled workers and addresses the role of stakeholders in improving knowledge in IBS construction.

Tall building performance is increasingly being a topic of considerable interest and research as the built environment becomes more concerned about sustainability. However, contemporary architecture is characterized by irregular shapes whose complexity is related to the fulfilment of several requirements architecturally and structurally, which compounds the challenges of effective collaboration between architects and engineers during early stage where design decisions heavily impact the overall performance of the building and its sustainability index. This paper presents an overview of the related previous studies to explore the key factors influencing the design outcome of complex tall buildings. Consequently, this research provides the groundwork for Multidisciplinary Computational Optimization (MCO) through proposing a methodological interactive design approach in which structure is integrated into the development of tall building forms. A study was conducted to determine the impact of applying different sources of Mg, namely kieseri... more A study was conducted to determine the impact of applying different sources of Mg, namely kieserite, ground magnesium limestone (GML) and Mg-rich synthetic gypsum (MRSG) on an acid tropical soil, oil palm growth and production. Besides high amount of Mg and Ca, MRSG contains S. Exchangeable Ca in the untreated soil of the plantation was 0.64 cmol c kg -1 , but its critical level to sustain oil palm growth was 0.9 cmol c kg -1 . MRSG was applied in the plantation as Mg-fertilizer; however, since Ca is also a limiting nutrient, oil palm growth was correlated (r = 0.69) with Ca supplied by the MRSG. Mg needed to sustain oil palm production is normally supplied by kieserite. Its requirement can be met at a lower cost compared to that of the kieserite by using MRSG. Due to MRSG treatment, exchangeable Ca in the soil increased steadily to satisfy the requirement of oil palm for fruit bunches production. From the glasshouse and field study, it was observed that MRSG applied at 1.5 times the recommended rate gave results comparable to that of the kieserite. MRSG treatment resulted in the increase of soil pH to >5 that precipitated Al 3+ as inert Al-hydroxides, which eventually enhanced oil palm seedlings growth. Thus, MRSG can also replace GML to increase soil pH and satisfy the Ca and Mg requirement of oil palm. It can be concluded that MRSG has the potential to be used as a source of Mg as well as Ca for oil palm grown on acidic soil.

Therefore, facility managers are in a commanding position to maximise the potential of sustainability through operation, maintenance and upgrade leading to decommission and deconstruction. Sustainability endeavours in facility management practices will not only contribute to reducing energy consumption, waste and running costs, but also help improve organisational productivity, financial return and community standing of the organisation. At the forefront facing sustainability challenge, Facility manager should be empowered with the necessary knowledge and capabilities. However, literature studies show a gap between the level of awareness, specific knowledge and the necessary skills required to pursue sustainability in the profession. People capability is considered as the key enabler in managing the sustainability agenda as well as being central to the improvement of competency and innovation in an organization. This paper aims to identify the critical factors for enhancing people capabilities in promoting the sustainability agenda in facility management practices focusing in infrastructure project. Starting with a total of 23 critical factors identified from previous questionnaire survey, the authors conducted an interview with experts in facility management who involved directly with infrastructure project to assess the perceived importance of these factors. The findings reveal these 23 critical factors as significantly important to support sustainable facility management in infrastructure project. They form the basis of a mechanism framework developed to equip facility managers with the right knowledge, to continue education and training and to develop new mind-sets to enhance the implementation of sustainability measures in FM practices in infrastructure project.

Multi-objective optimization has been performed for the aerodynamic shape optimization of the wing configuration. The three-dimensional wing shape defined by four design variables is optimized. For achieving the most desirable aerodynamic efficiency (lift-todrag ratio), Response Surface Method and Genetic Algorithm is utilized. To ensure the reliability of the solution and validating the numerical evaluation, flow around a delta wing is simulated and results are compared with credible numerical works. Furthermore, the particular design variables, which have serious effects on the objective functions, are found. Wing sweep angle along with aspect ratio has strong effects on the main outputs. Given that the current flow regime is supersonic, counteracting the negative effects of shock waves is one the most important design points. Among the studied parameters, leading edge sweep angle has the greatest impact on the main objectives of this research and it is the primary factor for delaying the formation of shock waves over the wing surface. Lift and drag coefficients, as primary objective functions, have higher sensitivity to changes in aspect ratio. By comparison to best geometry among initial cases, aerodynamic efficiency is increased by approximately 15% as a result of optimization study of this supersonic wing geometry.

It is a convenient concept for illumination of windowless parts of buildings. The light performance of this is highly dependent on the solar altitude due to the small inlet aperture. Placing the laser-cut panel (LCP) at the entrance aperture in light pipe system, will increase the light performance during low solar angle. This paper presents the results of light performance a 400mm diameter light pipe integrated with a laser-cut panel at entrance aperture as collector. For that reason, this research adopted an experimental approach to compare the light pipe performance via 1:10 scale model. Two scale models were built. LCP in the form of pyramids was fitted at the entrance aperture of light pipe in different tilted angle 40 0 and 47.5 0 . The system has been monitored 30 minutes interval with lux meter to evaluate the improvement light performance on a working plane for 6 days under good sky condition. The results of this experiment shows that LCP with 40 0 tilted angle performed better than 47.5 0 tilted angle. The light pipe with LCP as collector the minimum recommended illuminance by Malaysian Standard (MS) 1525:2007 can be achieved as early at 8am.

The construction industry embraces IBS for better construction quality with reduced failure risks and cost effectiveness. This method is highly supported by the Malaysian government through Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia. However, IBS demands workforce that is skilled enough to produce and install construction components either on-site or off-site. The workers are deemed to be knowledgeable in handling materials, methods, and tools for constructing structures like houses, buildings, highways and roads. In fact, workers involved in construction projects are often found with low knowledge, skills, and accustomed to conventional methods instead of IBS. This research aimed at determining factors that may contribute enhancing skilled worker requirements for improving the implementation of IBS construction projects in Malaysia. The questionnaires were used to collect data from contractors involved in IBS construction projects in Malaysia. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 22.0 software was used to analyse the collected data. The results show that skilled labour with awareness of IBS implementation can handle and implement IBS projects properly. The results of this work revealed that the skilled workers also ensure the projects can be accomplished on time with better quality. The usage of foreign workforce can be minimized by encouraging local labours to participate in IBS as skilled workers, which enhances the market share of construction industry in Malaysian economy. This research provides valuable information regarding the importance of skilled workers and addresses the role of stakeholders in improving knowledge in IBS construction.
