We present a semi-supervised learning approach which utilizes a heuristic model for learning morp... more We present a semi-supervised learning approach which utilizes a heuristic model for learning morpheme segmentation for Arabic dialects. We evaluate our approach by applying morpheme segmentation to the training data of a statistical machine translation (SMT) system. Experiments show that our approach is less sensitive to the availability of annotated stems than a previous rule-based approach and learns 12% more segmentations on our Iraqi Arabic data. When applied in an SMT system, our approach yields a 8% relative reduction in the training vocabulary size and a 0.8% relative reduction in the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) rate on the test set, again as compared to the rule-based approach. Finally, our approach also results in a modest increase in BLEU scores.

ABSTRACT Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) may cause encephalomyelitis in immune competent adults. We r... more ABSTRACT Human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) may cause encephalomyelitis in immune competent adults. We report two patients infected by the virus. A 34-year-old male presenting with paraparesis and a sensitive deficiency located in D6 dermatome. Cerebrospinal fluid had 35 white blood cells per mm³ and 75 mg protein per dl. A PCR-microarray examination was positive for HHV-7. The patient was treated with prednisolone and ganciclovir with full recovery. A 27-year-old male presenting with headache, fever and diarrhea. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed 160 cells per mm³ and 75 mg protein per dl. Viral RNA detection was positive for HHV-7. The patient was managed with analgesia and rest and was discharged with the diagnosis of viral meningitis. Our communication supports the notion that HHV-7 may be considered as pathogen factor in humans, even in immune competent ones.

This paper presents a technique to carry out progressive transmission of a volume data set using ... more This paper presents a technique to carry out progressive transmission of a volume data set using a hierarchical index of the data set. The intermediate data transmitted can be used as a complete representation, allowing the client to perform any computation on the volume and to generate any isosurface. The experiments performed show that a good approximation can be achieved for medical data sets with less than ten per cent of the data transmitted. The hierarchical index used is a compressed BONO index (cell octree), that is also used to speed up the isosurface generation.

The system is formed by a phase detector, a low-pass filter, as well as a voltage controlled oscillator including such variable capacitance. A theoretical study is proposed and experimentally validated. Capture and locked ranges of hundreds of kHz have been obtained for the configuration used in this circuit. An application as frequency demodulator using a practical implementation of this circuit has been demonstrated.

The use of Hierarchical Extended Non-Linear Transformations is presented as a powerful tool for obtaining such kind of expressivity.
The main characteristic of liquid crystals is that their properties, both electrical and optical,... more The main characteristic of liquid crystals is that their properties, both electrical and optical, can be modified through a convenient applied signal, for instance a certain voltage. This tunable behavior of liquid crystals is directly related to the orientation of their nanometric components with respect to a director direction. However, the initial alignment is a fabrication-dependent parameter and may be either planar or homeotropic. In addition, the strong dependence of the properties of liquid crystals with the temperature is well known and widely used for several temperature sensors. This dependence is produced by the influence of the temperature on the ordering of the molecules. In this work, we have studied the temperature dependence of the electric properties of a liquid crystal cell, in particular the dielectric permittivity, with the temperature as a function of the initial alignment set during the fabrication process. Starting from experimental measurements, an equivalent circuit model including the temperature dependence has been proposed. We have observed that a good linearity in a wide temperature range is provided at a suitable exciting frequency. Finally, a proper conditioner circuit is proposed as a powerful tool for linear and high sensibility temperature measurement.
