Assessing Induction and Retention of Teachers in Biakoye District in the Volta Region, Ghana

The study assessed the induction of teachers in basic schools and the effects of the induction co... more The study assessed the induction of teachers in basic schools and the effects of the induction course on teacher retention in the Biakoye District. To achieve this, a sequential mixed approach was chosen with the use of survey and case study designs. A simple random sampling procedure was used to select 220 teachers from ten (10) basic schools in the Biakoye District for the quantitative phase. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the 220 teachers. In terms of the qualitative phase on the other hand, the convenience sampling procedure was used to select three (3) Head Teachers in addition to the District Director of Education for the study. With this, the semistructured interview guide was used to collect data. Both data sets were analysed using the thematic analysis and regression. The study revealed that the induction programme helped teachers to develop skills in technological orientation and improved performances. It was therefore, recommended that the Colleges of Education should institutionalise induction policy, introduction of mentor-mentee relationship, training and capacity building of Head Teachers in induction programmes, investment in induction training programmes for new teachers and coordinating and alignment of induction programmes among providers.

Senior high school chemistry students performance in IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds

This paper reports on a study that investigated the performance of Chemistry students in IUPAC no... more This paper reports on a study that investigated the performance of Chemistry students in IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds from two school types. The study focused on senior high school (SHS) students&#39; performance in IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds. A cross-sectional survey provided the study with quantitative data. Stratified random sampling procedure was used to select 245 students from four out of 18 schools who offer elective science for 2010/2011 academic year in the Kumasi Metropolis of Ghana. An achievement test of 30 items was used for collection of the quantitative data. The results from the study showed that the SHS Chemistry students had showed low performance in IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds. The independent-samples t-test analyses of the results show that there were no statistical significant differences between the scores of students from well-endowed and less-endowed schools on both naming and writing structural formulae of organic compounds using the IUPAC nomenclature system. It is therefore recommended that any assistant provided by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to help students to improve on their performance in IUPAC nomenclature of organic compounds should be independent of the school-type.

The hydrothermally stable MCM-48 mesoporous molecular sieve was successfully prepared at extremel... more The hydrothermally stable MCM-48 mesoporous molecular sieve was successfully prepared at extremely low cost of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) by carefully adjusting the synthesis conditions. The increasing of the crystallization temperature from 373K to 423K can dramatically reduce the CTAB surfactant amount for the preparation of MCM-48 from 0.65 to 0.1 of the CTAB/Si ratio. The effect of increasing crystallization temperature on the formation process of MCM-48 at low CTAB cost was carefully studied. The influences of OH−/Si ratio and fluoride addition to the structure stability of the MCM-48 material synthesized at CTAB/Si=0.1 and 423K were systematically studied by XRD patterns. Moreover, the combination of increasing crystallization temperature and adding small amount of fluoride ions can considerably improve the structure stability of MCM-48 when reducing the CTAB cost.
