Background and objective: Health literacy is an important factor in the ability of a woman to eng... more Background and objective: Health literacy is an important factor in the ability of a woman to engage in the activities of health promotion and prevention for herself and her Family. So, the aim of this study was to determine health literacy level and the relationship between health literacy and public health status, as well as health care utilization and health preventive behaviors, in urban women of Baluchistan region. Methods: This was a descriptive-analytical study which was conducted on 247 women aged 18-65 years old. Samples were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling. Information was collected using a questionnaire consisted of two part including Health Literacy for Iranian Adults and GHQ28 standard questionnaire for assessing general health status, health care utilization and health preventive behaviors which was completed using home interviewing. Collected data were analyzed using statistical software SPSS 18 and statistical tests: Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square and Mann whitney. Results: 32.4 % of women had adequate health literacy level, 34.4% had border level and 33.2% had inadequate level. Inadequate health literacy was more frequent among younger household women with less educated and lower income (P<0.001). Also, women with higher health literacy level assessed their public health at the better status and attempt to do screening more than others. Conclusion: This study showed that the health literacy level was inadequate in the women of Baluchistan region. Therefore, Codification comprehensive program , create a simple, understandable and accessible media and training materials, as well as theory-based educational interventions for people with inadequate health literacy can be an effective way to develop health literacy skills and health promotion in society. This study aimed to explore the obstacles to mammographic screening of breast cancer in women.Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 812 women over the age of 40 who had not undergone mammographic screening or had undergone it irregularly from three selected clinics in Zahedan in 2017. The Health Literacy for Adults (HELIA) is a measure for health literacy and consists of 33 items ... more The Health Literacy for Adults (HELIA) is a measure for health literacy and consists of 33 items covering 5 factors. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the instrument for urban population of Balochistan, Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study among adult populations of Balochistan. Four hundered adults were selected by cluster sampling. The questionnaire was completed by participants. Psychometric properties of the instrument were assessed performing Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and internal consistency. Results: The analysis of data showed that the Health Literacy for Adults (HELIA) had good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.78 to 0.90). The CFA supported the five factor structure for the HELIA. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the Health Literacy for Adults (HELIA) is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring health literacy in urban population of Balochistan, Iran.

After reviewing the literature, the tool was designed, and its validity and reliability were approved based on psychometric data of the target group and the view of a panel of experts through calculating the content validity ratio, content validity index, exploratory factor analysis, and internal consistency. Maternal health literacy, in addition to the quality of prenatal care, is a key factor in control... more Maternal health literacy, in addition to the quality of prenatal care, is a key factor in controlling the underweight baby. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of health literacy and adequacy of prenatal care on the outcome of birth weight. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted on 860 pregnant women who were selected by random cluster sampling. The data were collected using the Health Literacy for Iranian Adults (HELIA) and the adequacy of care for pregnancy. The data were analyzed using SPSS windows version 20 by descriptive statistics and regression analysis Results: The prevalence of low birth weight was 16.5%. The adequacy of the pregnancy index of 33% was inadequate and 67% of women had an average index. The mean level of health literacy was 65.97 ± 1.74 in pregnant women. The adequacy of care for pregnancy was the strongest predictor of birth weight (47%). Health literacy components: understanding (21%), appraisal (13%) and decision-making and applying information (12%) was predicted birth weight. Conclusion: Prenatal care adequacy index and health literacy were predictors of birth weight, which highlighted the need for more attention to prenatal care and health literacy in health promotion programs for pregnant women.

That affects the use of services and information of prenatal care. The aim of study was to determine the relationship between health literacy and prenatal care in young pregnant women. Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was carried out c ross sectional in 2016. Research population, consisted of all Pregnant young women referring to urban health centers of Balochistan, 215 pregnant young women were selected according to a stratified sampling basis. Questionnaires Health Literacy for Iranian Adults (HELIA) and prenatal care was applied for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi square test through SPSS19. Results: The mean age of pregnant women was 22.8 ± 7.79 years. The mean score of maternal health literacy was 67.69 ± 12.52 out of 100. 21.66% of studied women had insufficient health literacy, 26.04% not enough health literacy, 36.27% adequate health literacy and 15.81% high health literacy. There was a significant relationship between health literacy and taking iron tablet, multivitamin, and folic acid, diet, brushing and using dental floss (P<0.05). Health literacy was not statistically significant with walking (P = 0.86). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between maternal health literacy with prenatal care that shows the necessity of more attention to maternal health literacy in health promotion programs. ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effects of self-efficacy, social support, and health l... more ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effects of self-efficacy, social support, and health literacy on prenatal care and birth weight among pregnant women. This descriptive-analytical study was conducted on 860 primiparous pregnant women who referred to health care centers for prenatal care in Iranshahr, Iran. Participants were selected through a two-stage cluster sampling. The data were collected from November 2016 to the end of January 2017 using a valid and reliable questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive tests, chi-square and hierarchical regression analyses in SPSS 20. The findings indicated that health literacy, self-efficacy, income, social support, and education level explained for 7.5%, 4.6%, 2.6%, 1%, and 0.6% of the variances in caring prenatal care, respectively. Moreover, income, prenatal care, insurance, health literacy, and social support were the most effective on birth weight outcome (OR = 2.21, OR = 2.12, OR = 2, OR = 0.66, OR = 0.17). The results of the current study indicated that a combination of health literacy, self-efficacy, and social support are necessary to improve prenatal care and birth weight for Iranian low-income pregnant women.
