Dr Hodgson was one of the pioneers in promoting and supporting e-Learning in Hong Kong. She has been working in higher education since 1997, and served The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Auckland, University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and now The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).Her research areas include technology-enriched teaching and learning, assessment in higher education, and massive open online courses. Serving in the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research in CUHK between 2015 and 2019, she was the principal investigator in ‘Immersive virtual reality’ and ‘SMART assessment’ [https://www.smartassessments.net] and a co-principal investigator in eight other projects funded by the university. Concurrently, she was the co-principal investigator of the following joint-university Teaching and Learning Projects 2016–19 funded by the University Grants Committee: (1) ‘Coding, Design, and Global Involvement: Engaging Students in Multi-domain Active Learning through the Creation of Mobile Apps and an Apps Resource Centre (ARC)’

Th is research explores why academics in Hong Kong embed learning technologies into their teachin... more Th is research explores why academics in Hong Kong embed learning technologies into their teaching despite competing demands at work. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. In embedding learning technologies, some academics reported that they could support learners who were not active in learning better, extend learning opportunities and engage in alternative learning experiences. Others reported that they became more eff ective in managing large classes and more effi cient in preparations for teaching, they could prepare improved teaching materials, and they had better interactions with students. Yet others reported that they were keen to keep themselves and their students up to speed with the changing learning environment and have students better prepared for their future careers.

To create a blended learning community, academics may have to apply technical pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK). This paper reports the study of two cohorts with 110 students studying ‘Service Marketing’ for an associate degree course between 2008 and 2009 in Hong Kong. Although these students typically had prior knowledge and experiences as being consumers, they were novices in service marketing. This chapter sheds light on how a leadership general education (GE) course, called “Leadership in... more This chapter sheds light on how a leadership general education (GE) course, called “Leadership in Sustainability”, which adopted a mixed pedagogy and andragogy approach, succeeded in facilitating students’ leadership development. Upon conceptualisation of the course, research was conducted on learning approaches and two areas of knowledge domains—namely, leadership and sustainability. Finally, the course design adopted a mixed learning approach to maximise students’ learning experience. “Leadership in Sustainability” was the first GE course in Hong Kong that combined the two knowledge domains of leadership and sustainability in one module. It was launched in September 2013 for a class of 38 students for one semester at Hong Kong Baptist University, which has a long history of providing “whole-person education”.

University students now attend a variety of general education courses to provide a foundation and... more University students now attend a variety of general education courses to provide a foundation and broader perspective of knowledge across disciplines in Hong Kong. Among the variety of learning activities in such general education programs, students may have undergone different facets of transformation in university life. Students voluntarily prepare E-portfolios targeting the GE Student Outstanding Award and a campus-wide GE Eager to Share award scheme, with award levels through the General Education Office. While students make many instances of gained knowledge and skills in the structured curriculum, evidence of learning transformation through both the curriculum and cocurricular activities are analyzed and discussed from these E-portfolios.

Global Learners’ Behavior on News in Social Media Platforms Through a MOOC

Social media have played a significant role in modern life through popular platforms such as Face... more Social media have played a significant role in modern life through popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WeChat. In a MOOC, “Making Sense of News,” global learners participating in the course discussed local journalism practices in different countries. Over 900 messages were posted in the course during a period of 6 weeks. This paper explores how these participants discussed not only traditional journalism but also how verified and non-verified news were disseminated through social media in the course forum. NVivo 11 has been used to do theme coding and analysis. Among over 950 postings in the forum, “social media” emerged naturally in the forum discussion as one of the high-frequency phrases, even though the focus of the course was on practices in national and local corporate news agencies. There were 398 postings made by participants from the top five countries (Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, and the United States) in examining the various ways that news is disseminated. Findings show factors affecting news dissemination through social media, including individuals having greater interest as citizen journalists, making an impact, and responding to government control among the majority of global learners.

More importantly, it is about connecting patients and continuously performing medication reviews because patients' health conditions change over time [1]. This case study reports how a pharmacy educator redesigned the curriculum so that students could gain both cognitive knowledge and awareness of the human side of pharmacy practice through virtual simulation and connecting vulnerable people in the community. Pharmacy students in the 21st century are used to learning with technologies such as notebook computers, virtual reality devices and mobile applications [2]. Pharmacy students in Hong Kong have much exposure to the use of mobile devices for communication with peers, and they are highly encouraged to use mobile applications to find drug information and useful and reliable medical references with medical mobile applications. However, because they have very limited opportunities to know the communication and consultation process with doctors and patients, it would be a valuable experience if they can experience it through immersion in virtual reality devices using their mobile phones or notebook computers as preparation for clinical internships. A mobile application for e-health support for patients is under development, and it will gather health records of individual patients, information on drugs being prescribed and the pharmacist, and medical appointment data. These students may be able to build a holistic conceptual understanding of medical support for patients from hospital to being discharged into the community.
