In fisheries management, VMS is one of the key components of Monitoring, Control and Surveilance (MCS) that has been implemented in Indonesia for monitoring fishing vessels with specific criteria operated in Indonesian waters. Application of VMS has been produced a lot of data. When the data is properly managed it can support the efforts on sustainable fishery resources in Indonesia. Currently the use of VMS technology in Indonesia is still continue to develop. VMS data use at the minimum level can provide data on vessels movement (position, time, route, and speed), and moreover vessel activities. When VMS data is analyzed further on its uses, VMS can provide various information to support an efficient MCS implementation effort. The paper will first offer a review of MCS and IUU fishing, and VMS in general and its development. The paper will also look at VMS implementation in Indonesia. Then the paper will offer the potential of VMS data use in fisheries management.
