Alternatively, wireless sensor network offers a comprehensive platform for capturing the surrounding environmental information using mobile sensing nodes, e.g., the OpenSense project in Switzerland deploying air quality sensors like CO on public transports like buses and trams. The two sensing platforms are typically isolated from each other. In this paper, we build ExposureSense, a rich mobile participatory sensing infrastructure that integrates the two independent sensing paradigms. ExposureSense is able to monitor people's daily activities as well to compute a reasonable estimation of pollution exposure in their daily life. Besides using external sensor networks, ExposureSense also supports pluggable sensors (e.g., O3) to further enrich air quality data using mobile participatory sensing with smartphones.

Development of geographic information systems for mobile and hand held computer devices requires ... more Development of geographic information systems for mobile and hand held computer devices requires significantly modified approach in comparison to development of more traditional GISs. Main issues to be addressed are efficient handling of limited memory and processing power, appropriate management and presentation of information on highly restricted devices and design of appropriate user interfaces. User interface design is rarely discussed in research but can significantly impact usability of the system. Communication of data and commands between a user and an application is explicit in most traditional user interface designs. This has the effect that information concerning environment of the user mostly remains unused or has to be formalized by the user. In the mobile environment the goal is to reduce workload for the user and automate, as much as possible, the process of application adaptation to the operating environment conditions. This paper presents basic categorization of context and data structures and algorithms developed for automated context management, interpretation and usage in an application based on mobile GIS application framework.

Such sensors can be extensively used to detect real-time traffic events and situations of user/vehicle in context- aware mobile applications. This paper explores the usage of a large number of anonymous mobile devices already involved in the road navigation function as mobile sources of traffic information. Apart from collecting location and speed data, which is extensively used today to calculate average trip time per road segment, we are exploring possibility of using an acceleration sensor integrated with a mobile device in order to efficiently and timely detect critical traffic events and redistribute this information to other drivers through proactive traffic information system. Such a system would be capable of warning drivers of 'near-accide...

For a given vehicle type fuel consumption and emission of fuel consumption-dependent emissions is affected by a number of variables such as vehicle type, vehicle age and class, traffic conditions, driver behavior, climate conditions, etc. This paper was aimed at development of mathematical models for estimation of fuel consumption-dependent emissions of passenger cars in the city of Niš. The experimental and methodological approach combines the use of on-board equipment for fuel consumption measurements and mathematical model development with the application of COPERT and artificial neural network (ANN). A given city zone, day in the week and the hour of day were used as input parameters and basis for estimation of fuel consumption-dependent emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and lead (Pb).

Proliferation of cheap and compact GPS receivers had the effect that Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems today almost exclusively use satellite based locating systems. This paper presents characteristics of realized city bus transit traffic in the city of Niš. Since the described system also uses GPS for vehicle location, initially, data about vehicles ’ locations acquired from AVL subsystem need to be transformed into form that is adequate for further usage in the system, analysis and prediction. Also, city bus transit tracking systems are specific concerning functionalities differing them from other vehicle fleet tracking systems. These specifics include cyclic vehicle routes, the need for specific performance reports etc. This paper specifically deals with vehicle motion prediction with on station arrival time estimation. The reduction of CO 2 emission which is in direct relationship with fuel consumption is of prime ... more The reduction of CO 2 emission which is in direct relationship with fuel consumption is of prime importance for the future sustainable use of passenger cars. For the given passenger car, the fuel consumption in urban areas is mostly affected by the conditions related to traffic and driving behavior. In this paper, an artificial neural network model for the prediction of passenger car fuel consumption in the City of Nis was developed based on experimentally measured data recorded through on-board diagnostics equipment. Fuel consumption was assumed to be a function of car speed, a city zone, an hour of day and a day of week. A comprehensive preliminary investigation revealed that single hidden layer artificial neural network model having ten neurons can be efficiently trained with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to provide satisfactory prediction accuracy. Finally, the analysis of effects of the selected independent variables on the fuel consumption was discussed based on twelve 3D surf...
