I was born in Rome and studied in Italy and Germany. In 1992 I moved to London, where I still live. I was Lecturer in German Language and Literature at the University of Oxford for fifteen years until 2010. Between 2000 and 2002 I was Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in German Literature at the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität in Munich. Since leaving academia, I have worked as an independent scholar and writer. My main interests are the literary reception of Classical mythology since the 18th Century, opera libretti, the literature of the Third Reich, and exile studies. More recently, my work has included cultural history and biography. My book, The Exiles. Actors, Artists and Writers Who Fled the Nazis for London, was published by Bloomsbury in September 2019. I am currently working on a biography of Edith Tudor-Hart for Yale University Press.
