Aqueous Phase Organometallic Catalysis Using (MeCp)2Mo(OH)(H2O)+. Intramolecular Attack of Hydroxide on Organic Substrates
Organometallics, 2004

These reactions, combined with the previously reported nitrile hydrations and phosphate esters hydrolyses catalyzed by 1, demonstrate that 1 is an effective homogeneous catalyst for hydration, hydrolysis, and oxidation reactions in aqueous solution under mild conditions (pH similar to7, similar to80 degreesC). Each reaction is proposed to proceed by intramolecular attack of the hydroxide ligand on a bound substrate. The intramolecular nature of the reaction is supported by the ester hydrolysis activation parameters (DeltaH(double dagger) = 5.9 +/- 0.7 kcal/mol and DeltaS(double dagger) = -48 +/- 9 eu), the lack of H/D exchange, and the significant increase (10(6)-10(8)) in the rate of hydrolysis over uncatalyzed hydrolysis.

Starting instead with (η 5-C 5 Me 5)Pt(CO)I, treatment with three nucleophilic (Z)-3-(2lithiovinyl)cyclopropenes provides platinabenzenes (η 5-C 5 Me 5)[PtC 5 H 3 PhR] (R=Ph (8), t-Bu (9), Me (10)) in low to modest yield. All platinabenzenes have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Intermediate σ-vinyl complexes (η 5-C 5 Me 5)Pt(σ-C 5 H 3 PhR) (R=Ph (14), t-Bu (15)) are also isolated from the reaction mixtures and convert cleanly to the corresponding platinabenzenes in near quantitative yield. Reactivity studies of (η 5-C 5 Me 5)-[PtC 5 H 3 Ph 2 ] with a variety of reagents/conditions are also reported.

A wide variety of new metallabenzenes, encompassing new synthetic methods and new metal centers, is now available. New aromatic metallacycle topologies (iridanaphthalene, osmabenzynes) have been isolated and characterized. The first metallabenzene valence isomers (iridabenzvalenes, rhodabenzvalenes) and constitutional isomers (isoosmabenzenes) are now known. This review discusses the synthesis, chemistry, and physical properties of these intriguing aromatic compounds.

The inks were functionalized with π-bonder receptor molecules to achieve selectivity toward DNT and TNT molecules. Two types of CNT sensors, interdigitated electrode (IDE) and thin-film transistor (TFT) sensors were printed and were tested with DNT vapor and other analytes. The CNT IDE sensors were able to repeatedly detect DNT vapor levels as low as 0.5 ppb with a response time of less than 10 seconds. These sensors showed a high degree of selectivity toward DNT over nitrobenzene and nicotine. Sensor sensitivity was found to increase with an increase in receptor molecules present in the CNTs. Preliminary results on a CNT TFT sensor showed a response to 300 ppb of DNT, a response similar to that of an IDE sensor prepared with CNTs with the same level of functionalization. Preparation and testing of sensors (especially TFT sensors) made with more functionalized CNT inks are ongoing.

Undertaken by a private-public partnership involving Brewer Science (Rolla, Missouri), Jordan Valley Innovation Center of Missouri State University (Springfield, Missouri), and the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (Vicksburg, Mississippi), this work demonstrates the environmental life cycle assessment (ELCA) methodology as a diagnostic tool to pinpoint the particular processes and materials posing the greatest environmental impact associated with the manufacture of the CNTRENE material and CNT-based sensor devices. Additionally, ELCA tracked the degree to which optimizing the device manufacturing process for full production also changed its predicted marginal environmental impacts.
Concentrated Solutions of Highly Conductive Pyrene-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes Suitable for Printing
MRS Proceedings, 2013

Standard methods for circumventing this problem involve sidewall functionalization and surfactants. Sidewall functionalization invariably destroys the π-network that gives carbon nanotubes their useful electronic properties, while surfactants deposit an insulating layer onto the carbon nanotube surface that must be washed off to regain the desired properties. Non-covalent functionalization offers the possibility to achieve solubility without destroying the π-network, but published methods have resulted in relatively low concentrations or substandard electronic performance. We have developed a scalable method to non-covalently functionalize long…

The method broadly provides the step of reacting a compound containing a carbon nanotube (CNT), and multi-aromatic moiety in the presence of a strong acid. During the reaction step, the multi-aromatic moiety is bonded to the carbon nanotubes and non-covalently. Additionally, the functional moiety is to further functionalized by a strong acid. This double-functionalised allows dispersed without impairing the desirable electrical and physical properties thereof in a concentration which CNT exceeds a solution in 0.5 g / L. To the resulting solution is stable during several months storage no observable clumping phenomenon, and printing the conductive traces (conductive trace) by the ink-jet, screen, flexographic (flexographic), various means, including gravure printing, or rotation, and spray coating to be included in the solution.
Synthesis and characterisation of laterally substituted noncentrosymmetric main chain hydrogen-bonded polymers
Liquid Crystals, 2014
A series of laterally substituted noncentrosymmetric hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline polymers ... more A series of laterally substituted noncentrosymmetric hydrogen-bonded liquid crystalline polymers which incorporate stilbazole acceptor units, alkyl or ethylene glycol linkers units, and benzoic acid or phenol donor units were prepared and investigated for their hydrogen bonding behaviour and phase transitions. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) indicated that these polymers possess strong intermolecular donor–acceptor hydrogen bonding. These polymers have lower melting points than their non-substituted analogue, and some of the polymers are mesomorphic.
