This Nile delta lagoon has been at the heart of the industrial and commercial economies of the city from Antiquity through to present day. Against the backdrop of this rich geoarchaeological context, the aim of this coastal geomorphology thesis is to elucidate the environmental history of the Maryut region.We have reconstructed the hydrological and geographical evolution of the lagoon during the Holocene using: (1) bio-sedimentology of radiocarbon-dated sediment archives; and (2) strontium isotopes in ostracod shells. The Maryut basin was transgressed by the sea around 7.5 ka cal. BP. Progressively, Nile inputs became dominant in the lagoon's hydrological budget, concomitant with the coastal progradation of the delta. After 5.5 ka cal. BP, our data attest to a gradual return to dominant marine conditions, which we link to a reduction in Nile flow in the context of the end of the African Humid Period. This marine lagoon seems to have been perennial until 3 ka cal. BP before Nile inflow became dominant, from the 3rd millennium BP until 0.8-0.9 ka cal. BP. The sediment archives and the historical data support an important retraction of the waterbody around 1 ka cal. BP, recorded by evaporite deposits. This was followed by a new highstand around 0.7 ka cal. BP before a retraction centred on 0.3-0.2 ka cal. BP. Since around 2000 years, this contrasting environmental history is correlated with phases of agriculture peaks and recessions and shows the increasing impact of irrigation practices on the functioning of the Maryut, located at the end of the hydrological conveyor.

Les routes fluviales, lagunaires et maritimes de l’histoire du port de Narbonne se croisent au cœ... more Les routes fluviales, lagunaires et maritimes de l’histoire du port de Narbonne se croisent au cœur des etangs narbonnais et s’inscrivent dans un cadre geographique mouvant qui impose a son etude une approche geoarcheologique. Nous presentons ici l’etude du cas de Port la Nautique, situe vers l’extremite nord des etangs narbonnais et dont l’archeologie a revele l’intense activite portuaire qui s’y est deroulee entre le 1er siecle avant et le 1er siecle de notre ere. La compilation de 83 colonnes sedimentaires extraites au sein et autour de ce port antique permet de mieux apprehender l'evolution de ce rivage lagunaire occupe depuis l'Antiquite et d’apporter des indications paleo‑hydrologiques sur le fonctionnement des etangs a cette periode. Nos principales conclusions sont les suivantes :1 - le toit du substrat marneux miocene decrit d'ouest en est correspond a une morphologie de vallon qui explique l'accessibilite du site depuis le plateau du Quatourze et a promu un secteur lagunaire profond a proximite d’un rivage rocheux egalement dote de sources d’eaux douces ;2 - le niveau des etangs narbonnais est enregistre entre – 5 et – 5,6 m NGF vers 5500 avant notre ere et entre – 0,6 et – 0,3 NGF autour du changement d’ere ;3 - les assemblages faunistiques traduisent un environnement lagunaire tres ouvert aux influences marines durant l’antiquite. L’âge reservoir antique de la lagune est mesure entre 400 et 550 ans, en coherence avec celui du golfe du Lion actuel ;4 - apres l’antiquite, une phase de confinement du secteur par rapport au domaine marin correspond au compartimentage tardif des etangs narbonnais ;5 - les periodes antiques et contemporaines sont caracterisees par un taux de sedimentation apparent moyen de 9 ± 5 mm.an-1 et 33 ± 6 mm.an-1, respectivement. La periode intermediaire est caracterisee par un taux moyen de 0,5 ± 0,2 mm.an-1, similaire au taux de sedimentation moyen apparent mesure sur l'ensemble de la sequence lagunaire deposee depuis 7 500 ans (autour de 0,6 mm.an‑1). Ces deux phases de rapide exhaussement des fonds lagunaires sont mises en relation avec la presence de structures portuaires, dont le role protecteur face aux houles induit un role de piege a sediments ;- 6) durant l'occupation portuaire antique, la bathymetrie evolue entre 2,7 et 1 m a l'ouest et au centre et entre 3,2 et 2 m a l'est du site. La diminution de la hauteur d’eau disponible ferme l’acces de Port–la–Nautique aux navires de moyenne capacite et induit peut-etre le declin de son activite portuaire ;

Constraining radiocarbon reservoir age offsets is critical to deriving accurate calendarage chron... more Constraining radiocarbon reservoir age offsets is critical to deriving accurate calendarage chronologies from radiocarbon (C) dating of materials which did not draw carbon directly from the atmosphere. The application of 14 C dating to such materials is severely limited in hydrologically sensitive environments like the Black Sea because of the difficulty to quantify reservoir age offsets, which can vary quickly and significantly through time, due to the dynamics of the biogeochemical cycling of carbon. Here we reconstruct radiocarbon reservoir age offsets (Rshell-atm) of Holocene bivalve shells from the coastal Black Sea relatively to their contemporaneous atmosphere. We show that the radiocarbon reservoir age offset and the stable carbon isotope composition of bivalve shells are linearly correlated in this region. From a biogeochemical standpoint, this suggests that inorganic stable carbon isotope and radiocarbon compositions of Black Sea coastal waters are controlled by the balance between autochthonous primary productivity and heterotrophic respiration of allochthonous pre-aged terrestrial organic matter supplied by rivers. This provided an important implication for Black Sea geochronology as the reservoir age offset of 14 C-dated bivalve shell can be inferred from its stable carbon isotope composition. Our results provide a fundamental and inexpensive geochemical tool which will considerably improve the accuracy of Holocene calendar age chronologies in the Black Sea.

Tsunamis in the geological record: Making waves with a cautionary tale from the Mediterranean

From 2000 to 2015, tsunamis and storms killed more than 430,000 people worldwide and affected a f... more From 2000 to 2015, tsunamis and storms killed more than 430,000 people worldwide and affected a further >530 million, with total damages exceeding US$970 billion. These alarming trends, underscored by the tragic events of the 2004 Indian Ocean catastrophe, have fueled increased worldwide demands for assessments of past, present, and future coastal risks. Nonetheless, despite its importance for hazard mitigation, discriminating between storm and tsunami deposits in the geological record is one of the most challenging and hotly contended topics in coastal geoscience. To probe this knowledge gap, we present a 4500-year reconstruction of "tsunami" variability from the Mediterranean based on stratigraphic but not historical archives and assess it in relation to climate records and reconstructions of storminess. We elucidate evidence for previously unrecognized "tsunami megacycles" with three peaks centered on the Little Ice Age, 1600, and 3100 cal. yr B.P. (calibrated years before present). These~1500-year cycles, strongly correlated with climate deterioration in the Mediterranean/North Atlantic, challenge up to 90% of the original tsunami attributions and suggest, by contrast, that most events are better ascribed to periods of heightened storminess. This timely and provocative finding is crucial in providing appropriately tailored assessments of coastal hazard risk in the Mediterranean and beyond.
