Based on the resilience theory, and with a sample of 2975 Portuguese students, the present study aims to: i) identify patterns of adjustment in the face of peer victimisation and perceptions of discrimination; ii) explore the association between the patterns of adjustment and the characteristics of participants (the who) and of the victimisation (the when and why). Cluster analysis revealed five patterns of adjustment: Unchallenged; Externally Maladjusted; Internally Maladjusted; Resilient, and At-Risk. The results suggest that there is no complete resilience in the face of social victimisation. Group differences were found regarding: i) gender, type of course, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, parental educational level and religious beliefs; ii) the age at which peer victimisation was more frequent, and; iii) the motives underlying discrimination. Globally considered, peer victimisation is representative of...

A sample of 682 students (ages 11-17) completed measures of hope, school engagement, life satisfaction, self-worth, and mental health. Academic achievement was obtained from students' school records. Based on their hope scores, students were divided into three groups: "extremely low" (bottom 10% of the distribution), "average" (middle 25%), and "extremely high" (upper 10%). Results indicate that students in the extremely high hope (EHH) group differed from students with average (AH) and extremely low hope (ELH) on all measures. Further, EHH and AH are associated with mental health benefits that are not found among students reporting comparatively ELH levels. Taken together, the findings support the notion that EHH in students is associated with adaptive psychological and school-related functioning. Overall, given the superior adjustment profile, perhaps ''enough hope'' should be defined as "EHH."

A sample of 367 Portuguese students completed the Portuguese-language versions of the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS; Snyder et al., 1997), Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS; Huebner, 1991), Global Self-Worth Sub-scale (Harter, 1985) and Mental Health Inventory-5 (MHI-5; Berwick et al., 1991). The first step included translation, back-translation, inspection for lexical equivalence and content validity and cognitive debriefing. Reliability (internal consistency and stability), factor structure and criterion-related validity were investigated. The validation process of the Portuguese CHS version shows psychometric properties similar to the English language CHS, suggesting that it measures the same construct in the same way. Implications of these findings are discussed.

The study includes a sample of 31 students from a community school, a matched comparison group of 31 students, and 2 secondary groupsguardians and teachers of the students' intervention group. Students completed a questionnaire packet that included demographic information, the Portuguese versions of the Children's Hope Scale, Students' Life Satisfaction Scale, Mental Health and Self-Worth Scales. Academic achievement was obtained from school records. At baseline, groups are statistically similar on the variables of interest. At post-test the intervention group had enhanced hope, life satisfaction and self-worth. In the intervention group, benefits in hope, life satisfaction and self-worth were maintained at the 18-month follow up. Results suggest that a brief hope intervention can increase psychological strengths, and participants continue to benefit up to 1-year and 6-months later.

Previous studies point towards several dimensions. In order to better evaluate health care services, it is curtail to have Portuguese language tools of easy appliance. The aim of the study is to validate the PSS in Portuguese. This is a descriptive study using a convenience sample of ninety one mothers. Participants were primary healthcare clients with children aged of 1 or less. The analysis regarded sensitivity, reliability, as well as concurrent, discriminant, converging and factorial validity. After Promax rotation, three factors were extracted explaining 82.13% of the variance. Reliability analysis was observed by split-half method showing a Spearman-Brown correlation coefficient of 0.91. Cronbach's alpha of the Portuguese PSS total scale and subscales were satisfactory with coefficients between 0.829 and 0.941. Concurrent validity was supported by a continuous variable of support from nurses. Discriminant validity showed in women with a normal vaginal delivery, a higher satisfaction both globally and on the three dimensions. The properties observed at the PSS have shown to be satisfactory. PSS reveals itself as a valid measure of the obstetric client's satisfaction.
