This work aims to identify the arousal and presence level during an emotional engineering study. ... more This work aims to identify the arousal and presence level during an emotional engineering study. During the experimental sessions, a high-immersion Virtual Reality (VR) system, a CAVE-like configuration, will be used. Thirty-six volunteers will navigate through virtual houses that can be customized and that have been designed for emotional induction. Emotional induction will be obtained by stimulating the senses of sight, hearing and smell. For this purpose, the ambient lighting, music and smell will be controlled by the researcher, who will create a comfortable environment for the subject. Several physiological variables - Electrocardiogram (ECG), Respiratory signal and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) - will be recorded during the sessions. The obtained results will help furniture companies identify the senses that have more influence on emotions and will be the basis for new studies about user needs in the sector of furniture and interior decoration.

To identify key clinical knowledge to elaborate a set of recommendations, with a high level of consensus, necessary for the approach to fungal infections in critically-ill hematology patients. A Spanish prospective questionnaire, which measures consensus through the Delphi technique, was anonymously answered and e-mailed by 30 multidisciplinary national experts, all specialists in fungal invasive infections from six scientific national societies; intensivists, anesthesiologists, microbiologists, pharmacologists and specialists in infectious diseases. Although the management of invasive fungal infection (IFI) has improved, a number of controversie... more Although the management of invasive fungal infection (IFI) has improved, a number of controversies persist regarding the approach to invasive fungal infection in non-neutropenic medical ward patients. To identify the essential clinical knowledge to elaborate a set of recommendations with a high level of consensus necessary for the management of IFI in non-neutropenic medical ward patients. A prospective, Spanish questionnaire, which measures consensus through the Delphi technique, was anonymously answered and e-mailed by 30 multidisciplinary national experts, all specialists (intensivists, anesthesiologists, microbiologists, pharmacologists and specialists in infectious diseases) in IFI and belonging to six scientific national societies. They responded to five questions prepared by the coordination group after a thorough review of the literature published in the last few years. For a category to be selected, the level of agreement among the experts in each category had to be equal to or greater than 70%. In a second round, 73 specialists attended a face-to-face meeting held after extracting the recommendations from the chosen topics, and validated the pre-selected recommendations and derived algorithm. The following recommendations were validated and included in the algorithm: 1. several elements were identified as risk factors for invasive candidiasis (IC) in non-hematologic medical patients; 2. No agreement on the use of the colonization index to decide whether prescribing an early antifungal treatment to stable patients (no shock), with sepsis and no other evident focus and IC risk factors; 3. agreement on the use of the Candida Score to decide whether prescribing early antifungal treatment to stable patients (no shock) with sepsis and no other evident focus and IC risk factors; 4. agreement on initiating early antifungal treatment in stable patients (no shock) with a colonization index>0.4, sepsis with no other evident focus and IC risk factors; 5. agreement on the performance of additional procedures in stable patients (no shock) with sepsis and no other evident focus, IC risk factors, without colonization index>0.4, but with a high degree of suspicion. Based on the expert's recommendations, an algorithm for the management of non-neutropenic medical patients was constructed and validated. This algorithm may be useful to support bedside prescription.

To determine if serum levels of endothelial adhesion molecules were associated with the developme... more To determine if serum levels of endothelial adhesion molecules were associated with the development of multiple organ failure (MOF) and in-hospital mortality in adult patients with severe sepsis. This study was a secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort study. Patients were admitted to two tertiary intensive care units in San Antonio, TX, between 2007 and 2012. Patients with severe sepsis at the time of intensive care unit (ICU) admission were enrolled. Inclusion criteria were consistent with previously published criteria for severe sepsis or septic shock in adults. Exclusion criteria included immunosuppressive medications or conditions. None. Baseline serum levels of the following endothelial cell adhesion molecules were measured within the first 72h of ICU admission: Intracellular Adhesion Molecule 1 (ICAM-1), Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). The primary and secondary outcomes were development of MOF (⩾2 organ dysfunction) and in-hospital mortality, respectively. Forty-eight patients were enrolled in this study, of which 29 (60%) developed MOF. Patients that developed MOF had higher levels of VCAM-1 (p=0.01) and ICAM-1 (p=0.01), but not VEGF (p=0.70) compared with patients without MOF (single organ failure only). The area under the curve (AUC) to predict MOF according to VCAM-1, ICAM-1 and VEGF was 0.71, 0.73, and 0.54, respectively. Only increased VCAM-1 levels were associated with in-hospital mortality (p=0.03). These associations were maintained even after adjusting for APACHE and SOFA scores using logistic regression. High levels of serum ICAM-1 was associated with the development of MOF. High levels of VCAM-1 was associated with both MOF and in-hospital mortality.

Influence of variables [soda, (0.5 to 3.0%), hydrogen peroxide (1.0 to 10.0%) and time (1 to 5 h)... more Influence of variables [soda, (0.5 to 3.0%), hydrogen peroxide (1.0 to 10.0%) and time (1 to 5 h)] in the bleaching of soda pulp of Hesperaloe funifera, on the properties of bleached pulps, was studied. Polynomial and neural fuzzy models had reproduced the results of Kappa number, brightness and viscosity of the pulps with errors less than 10 and 15%, respectively. By simulating the bleaching process of pulp H. funifera, with the polynomial and neural fuzzy models, the optimal values of operating variables can be found, so that the properties of bleached pulps differ little from their best values and instead will save chemical reagents, energy and plant size, operating with lower values of operating variables. Thus, by application of polynomial models, it was found that operating with a soda concentration of 0.5%, a hydrogen peroxide concentration of 5.5% and for a processing time of 3 h, it was possible to get a pulp with a brightness of 65.9% and a viscosity of 587 ml/g.

A neural fuzzy model was used to examine the influence of pulp bleaching variables of empty fruit... more A neural fuzzy model was used to examine the influence of pulp bleaching variables of empty fruit bunches from oil palm (EFB) and Hesperaloe funifera, such as soda concentration (0.5-3%), hydrogen peroxide concentration (1-10%) and processing time (1-3 h), on Kappa number, brightness and viscosity. The experimental results are reproduced with errors below 10% and 15% for EFB and H. funifera, respectively. Bleaching pulp simulation permits to obtain optimal values of the operating variables, so that the properties of bleached pulps will only slightly differ from their best values, while the lower values of the operating variables will save chemical reagents, energy and plant size. Thus, if applying 0.5% soda and 3% peroxide for 3 h, it is possible to get a pulp with a brightness of 74.9% and a viscosity of 716 mL/g, for EFB pulp, and of 63.3% and 584 mL/g, respectively, for H. funifera pulp.
