This thesis is based on three main assumptions: that the press in Indonesia was an agent for inte... more This thesis is based on three main assumptions: that the press in Indonesia was an agent for intellectual development; that the growth of the vernacular press was pioneered by Dutch scholars, Eurasian editors and peranakan Chinese and Indonesian journalists; and that the development of the vernacular press before 1914 ran parallel to the growth of social, economic and political conscious ness of the colonial society in the Dutch East Indies. The first I also wish to record my debt to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for supporting me financially during my studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies and I want also to thank the Ford Foundation for granting me a fellowship which enabled me to visit Cornell University and to carry out my research in Indonesia in 1973. Lastly I should like to thank my wife, Aysha, for her constant encouragement, patience and understanding during my long years of studies. 3 A Note on Orthography Both the old Dutch spelling system and the new Indonesian-Malaysian common spelling system inaugurated in 1972 are employed in this study. The spelling of names of persons, journals and organizations follow the old Dutch system. This paper is an attempt to study the development of the vernacular press in Padang, the capital ... more This paper is an attempt to study the development of the vernacular press in Padang, the capital city of the residency of Sumatra West Coast. While tracing the growth of the native press in Padang, its role as an agent of change as well as the people involved in the press business itself, attention will also be focused on the various issues brought to surface by the press such as the questions of modernization of society, religious reforms and the conflicts between the traditional and progressive leaderships reflected in the polemics between the kaum tua and kaum muda groups in Sumatra West Coast.

Di dalam bukunya, An Age in Motion/ Takashi Shiraishi meneliti zaman pergerakan kebangsaan, 1912-... more Di dalam bukunya, An Age in Motion/ Takashi Shiraishi meneliti zaman pergerakan kebangsaan, 1912-1926, di lawa dengan memberikan fokus kepada Surakarta sebagai sebuah locality di mana bergeraknya tokoh-tokoh seperti Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo, Haji Moh. Misbach dan Marco Kartodikromo. Tesis yang ingin diketengahkan oleh Shiraishi ialah bahawa tiga tokoh ini menolak klasifikasi nasionalisme, Islam dan komunisme~ sebaliknya merekalah yang menerangbenderangkan pergerakan di Surakarta dengan cara mereka yang tersendiri. Shiraishi juga menyatakan bahawa 'pergerakan' itu menunjukkan sesuatu yang lebih besar dan lebih kompleks daripada kebangkitan nasionalisme Indonesia. Tokoh-tokoh pergerakan itu, katanya, menggerakkan ide mereka, bahkan memperalatkannya dan sewaktu-waktunya pula menerjemahkan ide-ide itu dalam tindakan dan bahasa yang mudah dimengerti rakyat. Pandangan dan tesis Shiraishi inilah yang menarik saya untuk melihat kembali peranan salah seorang tokoh pergerakan yang telah ditela' ah oleh Shiraishi di dalam bukunya, iaitu Mas Marco Kartodikromo. Apakah benar hujah Shiraishi bahawa zaman 1912-1926 itu lebih mementingkan tokoh daripada partai? Atau, benarkah ali ran yang menjadi 'isme' dalam pola pemikiran tokoh-tokoh pergerakan itu tidak sarna sekali wujud? Harus ditanyakan juga ialah di manakah sumbemya keradikalan popular yang menggerakkan tokoh-tokoh tersebut? •
