The measurement resolution of this method depends on not only the interval of structured light but also the pattern direction. In this paper, we propose a method for acquiring homogeneous data by structured light measurements. The method uses multiple structured lights with different directions and then registers the data based on measurement density over the object surface. Our experimental results showed that the proposed method is capable of reproducing 3D shape of measurement objects more precisely.

In order to realize an ideal collaborative workspace, an effective handling scheme for both interactive virtual objects and system operation of VR/MR platform is needed. In this paper, we describe the three components, which are the direct manipulation interfaces for potable MR space and for fixed shared VR/MR space, and Interactive 3D Marker for displaying and manipulating virtual objects reflected lighting and geometry conditions of the real world. These components can give users seamless manipulation workspace by the natural operations such as they behave in their daily life. We also introduce Interactive Interior Design System using these components. This system realizes to coordinate the suitable interiors in the real space, by the free manipulation of virtual interior objects reflected the geometry and the lighting condition of the real space.

Structural color is derived from microstruc- ture of an object, which causes various optical phenomena, such as reflec- tion, refraction, diffraction, interference, and so on. In this paper, the au- thors take 'play of color' of opal as a typical and complex phenomenon of structural colors and

In interior design, for instance, the coordinates of the arrangements and the colours of the items need to be determined based on various layout plans. We propose a new framework for interactively arranging and rendering virtual objects in real space by manipulating physical 3D markers. A 3D marker consists of 2D codes and a spherical mirror for acquiring both geometric and photometric conditions by single camera instantaneously. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is effective for providing appropriate geometry and local lighting conditions to present each virtual object in a simple system. The proposed system allows the user to experiment arranging of virtual furniture and verify the created scene which is visually consistent with the physical space.

Vision Sensor Fusion for Circular Wing Planform

Our research at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) has been focusing on technology that will benefit search and rescue activities. We are interested in bandwidth optimization for transfer of vision sensor data by wireless transmission on Local Area Networks, packet or Ethernet radio, and other low bandwidth transmission systems complying with local laws in Japan. In the past, bandwidth and low transmitter power limits have been the main limiting factors in vision systems, because of the huge size of data sets to be transferred. In this paper we introduce a multi-tier method to fuse data from multiple vision sensors, which optimizes data transfer of 360-degree panoramic images used in search and rescue operations. Our research platform is integrated into a circular wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capability, which was invented and developed at NAIST and is the only UAV of its type in the world. The combination of a unique VTOL circular wing UAV and vision fusion methods presented in this paper, together with multiple cameras having multiple optical resolutions, delivers highly optimized image enhancement features of 360-degree panoramic images over low bandwidth systems. These images are then transferred in near real-time to a base station (360-degree immersive Virtual Reality (VR) display system) located up to 14 kilometers away. The images from the immersive VR display system can then be re-broadcast over the Internet on a large-scale to search and rescue teams, government officials, and fire and police units.
