This article, a part of dissertation entitled Developing Basic English Grammar Teaching Material... more This article, a part of dissertation entitled Developing Basic English Grammar Teaching Material based on Interactive Multimedia at University Level, presents the results of a study conducted to find the model of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia needed by the students. This empirical research employed both quantitative and qualitative analyses. Seventy eight students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang were involved. The students were required to articulate their need on a design of Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia. The data were collected through an open questionnaire. The first result is that Basic English Grammar teaching material based on interactive multimedia is very needed (with the score 3.1 out of 4). The purpose of this research was to test whether the effect of using the portfolio-based writing ... more The purpose of this research was to test whether the effect of using the portfolio-based writing assessment as an alternative assessment had better achievement on students' writing ability of descriptive text. The research used posttest only design, which means that students' ability in writing descriptive text was measured after the students were given a treatment. The population and samples of this research were students of X grades in SMA Negeri 17 Tebo. The instrument of this research was writing test to write a descriptive text. The result of this research showed that there was significant effect to the experimental group after getting the treatment. So that, the portfolio-based writing assessment could give better effect to students' writing ability in writing descriptive text. Kata Kunci : Portfolio-based writing assessment, Kemampuan Menulis, Descriptive text A. Introduction Writing is one of communication tool among people. People can share their ideas by taking it into written product so that others can read it. Harmer (2004) stated that writing is essential for both speakers of foreign language and people who use it as the first language. Trible (in Harmer 2001), and Raison (2004) states that writing is a process occurs as a chain since it is a series of interaction with words and ideas that develop and change. In other word, writing requires process and it can be developed and changed while the process is running on. The writer also thinks of what to write, coherence and cohesion of the text, formation and legibility of individual letter, spelling, grammar including punctuation, organization, and selection of appropriate content for and intended audience. Related the process of writing above, there is doubt that writing is not easy task for the second language learners. In short, writing is difficult subject to teach. This opinion is not different from Heaton(1997) in Tassema (2005) who states that writing is a complex and sometimes difficult to teach, requiring mastery not only grammatical and rethorical devices but also conceptual and judgemental
This article presents a partial result ola study conducted to look at the implementation of refle... more This article presents a partial result ola study conducted to look at the implementation of reflective teaching to improve the prospective teachers' teaching skill in teaching EFL. The focus reported here is their selfreflection which unveils their cognition of teaching English. Twelve prospective teachers taking teaching practicum subject at five junior high schools in Padang were involved. They were required to write the results of their reflection after each teaching presentation in their journals. A focus group interview was then conducted to find out the reasons behind their self-evaluation and their view about the interconnectedness between what they had learned about teaching and what they experienced in the field. The results of the analysis of these two sets of data revealed that the prospective teachers' reflection was dominated by their difficulties dealing with classroom management. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat penguasaaan grammar mahasiswa kelas K2-... more Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat penguasaaan grammar mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 (mahasiswa tingkat III jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang), khususnya concord , jenis-jenis kesalahan yang ditemukan, serta penyebab-penyebab kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh mahasiswa tersebut. Jenis penelitian yang dilakukan adalah penelitian deskriptif. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dari tes grammar yang terdiri dari 50 soal. Subjek penelitiannya adalah mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 yang berjumlah 30 orang. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, tingkat penguasaan grammar mahasiswa kelas K2-2011 jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Padang dalam concord masih rendah (46,53) dan mereka masih belum menguasai tipe-tipe concord. Kesalahan terbanyak ditemukan dalam Object – Complement Agreement, dimana sekitar 68,67% dari total kesalahan adalah kesalahan dalam tipe ini. Metode yang digunakan yaitu kuantitatif dengan melibatkan 3 orang mahasiswa untuk uji individu dan 27 orang mahasiswa untuk uji kelompok kecil. Temuan penelitian ini adalah (1) berdasarkan uji individu, kualitas desain pembelajaran dan tampilan visual Materi Ajar Basic Grammar tergolong baik (85,47 dan 83,33, dan; (2) berdasarkan uji kelompok kecil, kualitas desain pembelajaran dan tampilan visual draft Materi Ajar Basic Grammar juga tergolong baik (84,26 dan 87,85), materi ajar ini mudah digunakan (81,64) dan organisasi materi ajar ini mudah dipahami (80,35).

This study is aimed at finding the relationship between knowledge of schemata and text comprehens... more This study is aimed at finding the relationship between knowledge of schemata and text comprehension. It was conducted at English Department of State University of Padang on the fifth semester in the academic year of 2009/2010.There were 38 students as the sample using cluster sampling technique. The instruments used were multiple choice tests. The quantitative data were analized by using simple correlation and regression. It was found that there is a relationship between knowledge of schemata and text comprehension. It means that someone who has good knowledge of schemata will have good text comprehension. The equation is Ŷ = 13.39 + 0.95X1. Its correlation coefficient is 0.6962. The knowledge of schemata gives contribution 48.47% to text comprehension. The findings can be beneficial for the teachers as a consideration that they can help students to activate their schemata in order to get good text comprehension. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk melihat jenis teknik elisitas... more Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk melihat jenis teknik elisitasi yang digunakan oleh tiga orang guru bahasa Inggris SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi dan wawancara. Dalam mengobservasi, proses belajar mengajar direkam dengan menggunakan kamera vidio. Hasil rekaman ini ditranskripsikan dan dianalisis. Wawancara dilakukan dengan guru untuk mendapatkan informasi tambahan dari data yang didapat melalui observasi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, ditemukan bahwa guru memakai empat macam teknik elisitasi yaitu mengajukan pertanyaan (54,8%), mengajukan pertanyaan yang dikombinasikan dengan gambar (5,5%), mengajukan pertanyaan yang dikombinasikan dengan teks atau dialog (38,7%), dan mengajukan pertanyaan yang dikombinasikan dengan bahasa non verbal (1%). Teknik mengajukan pertanyaan menempati posisi paling tinggi. Teknik mengajukan pertanyaan yang dikombinasikan dengan permainan atau kegiatan tidak dipakai oleh guru.

Dalam proses belajar mengajar banyak siswa yang kesulitan dalam memahami teks dalam suatu bacaan, khususnya descriptive text. Untuk itu penulis memperkenalkan sebuah strategi dalam mengerjakan dengan menggunakan "THIEVES" strategi (Title, Headings, Introduction, Every first sentence, Visual, End of the text, and Summary). Title/judul, Headings/bagian atas atau kepala text, introduction/ pengenalan atau pengantar text, Every first sentence peraga, end of text/ akhir dari text, summary/ kesimpulan dari text. Dalam strategi ini siswa akan lebih lebih mudah menemukan informasi dari teks. Dalam strategi ini siswa diberikan kesempatan untuk membaca sehingga mereka lebih aktif dan termotivasi dalam pembalajaran bahasa inggris khusunya dalam memberikan kontribusi bagi guru dalam mengajarkan meningkatkan minat siswa dalam membaca. Artikel ini membahas tentang pengaruh Herringbone Technique terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa kela... more Artikel ini membahas tentang pengaruh Herringbone Technique terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa kelas VIII.3 SMPN 2 Enam Lingkung Padang Pariaman dalam teks recount. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah penelitian eksperimen. Hasil analisa posttest siswa memperlihatkan bahwa t-obtained lebih besar daripada t-table (2.8 > 2.00). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Herringbone Technique meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam teks recount yang dapat dilihat dari dua hal. Pertama, rata-rata pemahaman membaca siswa kelas VIII.3 SMPN 2 Enam Lingkung Padang Pariaman dalam teks recount secara umum meningkat dari 68.33 menjadi 80.33. Kedua, rata-rata pemahaman membaca siswa berdasarkan tiga indikator yang digunakan lebih tinngi dibandingkan dengan sebelum melakukan penelitian.

This research needs to be conducted since the result can become a formative evaluation for lecturers in teaching English for the freshmen. The method used in this reserach is a qualitative-descriptive method, supported by simple quantitative calculation. The data were taken from students’ mid term examination. The mid term examination included multiple choice, cloze procedure and composition or writing test. In writing test, the students were asked to write a one-paragrah composition. There were 6 (six) classes participaed in the test. One class was randomly taken as a sample A Target Modification Taxonomy by James (1998) is used to analyze and describe the errors. It was a descriptive study with the content analysis technique. The data were taken from the conversation from the characters in the Avatar movie. The utterances were grouped into four types of cooperative principles; they are the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner. It was found that the utterances among the characters in Avatar cartoon movies both fulfill and violate the cooperative principles.

This study is aimed at analyzing the implementation of the cooperative principles in Avatar carto... more This study is aimed at analyzing the implementation of the cooperative principles in Avatar cartoon movie. It was a descriptive study with the content analysis technique. The data were taken from the conversation from the characters in the Avatar movie. The utterances were grouped into four types of cooperative principles; they are the maxim of quantity, the maxim of quality, the maxim of relation and the maxim of manner. It was found that the utterances among the characters in Avatar cartoon movies both fulfill and violate the cooperative principles.
