Advocates of path dependent transformation processes assume varying transformation processes across post-Communist societies. They have criticized the MTT of being insensitive to the different paths of transformation post-Communist societies go through and the way this will influence changes in the effects of income determinants. This study will test the extent to which trends in the effects of income determinants converge across post-Communist societies. A cross-national and across time comparative research design will be employed, analyzing 61 cross-sectional, standardized surveys for five Central and Eastern countries covering the period 1991-2002. Results from modified weighted least squares regression analyses show an increasing trend in the effect of years of education on standardized personal income for all five countries as predicted by the MTT. Income effects of years of experience, private sector employment and gender do not show increasing trends for all countries, contradicting the MTT. The empirical trends in effects of income determinants are to a great extent consistent with Stark's typology of privatization strategies, giving some support to the theoretical notion of path dependent transformation processes.

Based on individual level analyses of 11 waves of survey data collected in urban China from 1978 to 2005, we found that (1) returns to schooling have been increasing over time;

We investigate this claim using data on self-employment in four post-communist countries (Bulgaria, Russia, Estonia and Hungary) in 1996 and 2005. We find support for a relationship between context-characteristics and self-employment; especially countries with lower levels of corruption show higher odds of self-employment. Unexpectedly, as the transformation process proceeded, human capital did not become a more important predictor for self-employment.

Most methods decompose income inequality into a between (explained) and a within (unexplained) part, according to two or more population subgroups or income sources. In this article we propose a regression analysis for a lognormal distribution of personal income, modeling both the mean and the variance, decomposing the variance as a measure of income inequality, and applying the method to survey data from Russia spanning the first decade of market transition (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002). For the first years of the transition, only a small part of the income inequality could be explained. Thereafter, between 1996 and 1999, a larger part (up to 40%) could be explained, and "winner" and "loser" categories of the transition could be spot. The self-employed, moving to the upper end of the income distribution, won from the transition. The unemployed were among the losers.

Various question formats are being used. Researchers seem to assume that the actual format used delivers the best estimate of the "true" income. However, surprisingly little empirical support is available for this claim. We implemented an experimental design using the short and long versions of income questions in a Hungarian survey. Results show an overall positive difference between the long and short version. The differences are related to the income components (wages and salaries, transfers, and assets), and respondent characteristics, controlling for the effect of the order of the two versions of income questions. Based on the results, we provide some recommendations for implementing income questions in surveys.
