Today Oman boasts impressive physical infrastructure, much improved socioeconomic conditions, and a high standard of living. The purpose of this background study is to contribute to a better understanding of developments in the Omani economy since 1980 and of the policy challenges the government faces in the medium term. The study focuses on some central aspects of Oman's economic experience, including the potential structural impediments to growth.

In 1996, however, macroeconomic policies weakened significantly, as the domestically financed deficit increased by over 4 percentage points, to almost 11 percent of GDP, and inflation tripled to over 17 percent. A key factor behind this deterioration was a dramatic 7 The quality of available data makes it difficult to be certain of macroeconomic developments in Albania. Nonetheless, Albania's strong growth performance in the early transition years is suggested also by a number of proxy indicators in particular in the agricultural area and the services sector. Burkina Faso needs to create 300,000 jobs annually to match its demographic growth, while about ninety percent of its workers are in the informal sector. Despite sustained robust economic growth over the past two decades driven by cotton and gold exports, private investment is low. Compounding the considerable development challenges that it faces, Burkina Faso is currently confronted by acute security and climatic threats, together with emerging fiscal risks. This country private sector diagnostic (CPSD) therefore investigates whether opportunities exist for the private sector to contribute more substantially to Burkina Faso’s development. The CPSD proposes a platform for action aimed at boosting Burkina Faso’s development through greater private sector i...

Over the past ten years, Brazil has made remarkable progress in achieving macroeconomic stability and high growth, while at the same time markedly reducing poverty. Indeed, over the period 2004–10 growth more than doubled to over 4.2 percent (from about 1.9 percent during the period 1996–2003), while inflation fell sharply from a peak of 15 percent in 2003 to an average of 3 to 5 percent during 2004–10. Most remarkably, poverty declined from 35 percent in 2000 to 22 percent in 2009. The paper draws appropriate attention to the role that industrial policy has played in fostering growth and to the need for sound principles of implementation to effect the expected results.

Working Papers describe research in progress by the author(s) and are published to elicit comments and to further debate. Since 1995, Tanzania has made major progress in economic reform and macroeconomic stabilization, resulting in strong growth and low inflation. This paper reviews Tanzania's growth performance and prospects and assesses the impact of growth on poverty. It finds that growth has been increasingly driven by higher factor productivity and that a continuation of recent policies should allow Tanzania to grow above 5 percent a year over the medium term. Furthermore, it finds that growth since 1995 has resulted in a significant decline of poverty and that prospects are favorable for Tanzania to attain its objectives for reducing income poverty by 2015.
