We describe methods for automatically identifying signature blocks and reply lines in plaintext e... more We describe methods for automatically identifying signature blocks and reply lines in plaintext email messages. This analysis has many potential applications, such as preprocessing email for text-to-speech systems; anonymization of email corpora; improving automatic content-based mail classifiers; and email threading. Our method is based on applying machine learning methods to a sequential representation of an email message, in which each email is represented as a sequence of lines, and each line is represented as a set of features. We compare several state-of-the-art sequential and non-sequential machine learning algorithms on different feature sets, and present experimental results showing that the presence of a signature block in a message can be detected with accuracy higher than 97%; that signature block lines can be identified with accuracy higher than 99%; and that signature block and reply lines can be simultaneously identified with accuracy of higher than 98%.

In this paper we investigate how email systems can be enhanced to work as recipient recommendation systems, i.e., suggesting who recipients of a message might be, while the message is being composed, given its current contents and given its previously-specified recipients. This can be a valuable addition to email clients, particularly in large corporations. It can be used to identify people in an organization that are working in a similar topic or project, or to find people with appropriate expertise or skills. Recipient recommendation can also prevent a user from forgetting to add an important collaborator or manager as recipient, preventing costly misunderstandings and communication delays.
It is often useful to classify email according to the intent of the sender (e.g., "propose a meet... more It is often useful to classify email according to the intent of the sender (e.g., "propose a meeting", "deliver information"). We present experimental results in learning to classify email in this fashion, where each class corresponds to a verb-noun pair taken from a predefined ontology describing typical "email speech acts". We demonstrate that, although this categorization problem is quite different from "topical" text classification, certain categories of messages can nonetheless be detected with high precision (above 80%) and reasonable recall (above 50%) using existing text-classification learning methods. This result suggests that useful tasktracking tools could be constructed based on automatic classification into this taxonomy.

In this paper, we offer three contributions to implicit query research. First, we show how to use query logs from a search engine: by constraining results to commonly issued queries, we can get dramatic improvements. Second, we describe a method for optimizing parameters for an implicit query system, by using logistic regression training. The method is designed to estimate the probability that any particular suggested query is a good one. Third, we show which features beyond standard TF-IDF features are most helpful in our logistic regression model: query frequency information, capitalization information, subject line information, and message length information. Using the optimization method and the additional features, we are able to produce a system with up to 6 times better results on top-1 score than a simple TF-IDF system.
Learning effective feature-based ranking functions is a fundamental task for search engines, and ... more Learning effective feature-based ranking functions is a fundamental task for search engines, and has recently become an active area of research . Many of these recent algorithms are based on the pairwise preference framework, in which instead of taking documents in isolation, document pairs are used as instances in the learning process. One disadvantage of this process is that a noisy relevance judgment on a single document can lead to a large number of mis-labeled document pairs. This can jeopardize robustness and deteriorate overall ranking performance. In this paper we study the effects of outlying pairs in rank learning with pairwise preferences and introduce a new meta-learning algorithm capable of suppressing these undesirable effects. This algorithm works as a second optimization step in which any linear baseline ranker can be used as input. Experiments on eight different ranking datasets show that this optimization step produces statistically significant performance gains over various state-of-the-art baseline rankers.

Stacked sequential learning is a meta-learning algorithm, in which an arbitrary base learner is augmented so as to make it aware of the labels of nearby examples. We evaluate the method on several "sequential partitioning problems", which are characterized by long runs of identical labels. We demonstrate that on these problems, sequential stacking consistently improves the performance of non-sequential base learners; that sequential stacking often improves performance of learners (such as CRFs) that are designed specifically for sequential tasks; and that a sequentially stacked maximum-entropy learner generally outperforms CRFs.

We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, EMBASE, (from the earliest date available to January 2015) for controlled trials that evaluated the effects of exercise training on aerobic capacity and pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s and forced vital capacity) in children and adolescents after congenital heart disease surgery. Weighted mean differences and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated,, and heterogeneity was assessed using the I (2) test. Eight trials (n = 292) met the study criteria. The results suggested that exercise training compared with control had a positive impact on peak VO2. Email is a key communication tool for collaborative workgroups. In this paper, we investigate how... more Email is a key communication tool for collaborative workgroups. In this paper, we investigate how team leadership roles can be inferred from a collection of email messages exchanged among team members. This task can be useful to monitor group leader's performance, as well as to study other aspects of work group dynamics. Using a large email collection with several workgroups whose leaders were previously defined, we demonstrate that leadership positions can be predicted by a combination of traffic-based and textbased email patterns. Traffic-based patterns consist of information patterns that can be extracted from the message headers, such as frequency counts, message thread position and whether the message was broadcast to the entire workgroup or not. Textual patterns are represented by the message's "email speech acts",i.e., semantic information with the sender's intent that can be automatically inferred by language usage. Using off-the-shelf learning algorithms, we obtained 96% accuracy and 88.2% in F-measure in predicting the leadership roles on 34 email-centered work groups.

In this paper we revisit two such problems, namely information leak detection and recipient recommendation, and study the impact of previously proposed solutions on real email users. Previous work addressing these problems showed a lot of promise on static email corpora tests. In this paper, we implement these solutions in an integrated interface as an extension to Mozilla Thunderbird, a popular open source email client. By capturing data about the usage patterns in the extension, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms against baseline methods and address issues related to user interface design and implementation. Preliminary results from a user study show promising usage patterns, indicating that these features can benefit a large number of email users.

The samples were plated on Sabouraud agar with chloramphenicol and incubated at 25 °C for 5 days. The yeasts isolated were phenotypically identified by biochemical and micromorphological tests. Hypertension is a public health problem and increases the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. T... more Hypertension is a public health problem and increases the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. To evaluate the effects of a resistance exercise session on the contractile and relaxing mechanisms of vascular smooth muscle in mesenteric arteries of NG-nitro L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control (C), hypertensive (H), and exercised hypertensive (EH). Hypertension was induced by administration of 20 mg/kg of L-NAME for 7 days prior to experimental protocols. The resistance exercise protocol consisted of 10 sets of 10 repetitions and intensity of 40% of one repetition maximum. The reactivity of vascular smooth muscle was evaluated by concentration‑response curves to phenylephrine (PHEN), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Rats treated with L-NAME showed an increase (p < 0.001) in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) compared to the initial period of induction. No difference in PHEN sensitivity was observed between groups H and EH. Acute resistance exercise reduced (p < 0.001) the contractile response induced by KCl at concentrations of 40 and 60 mM in group EH. Greater (p < 0.01) smooth muscle sensitivity to NPS was observed in group EH as compared to group H. One resistance exercise session reduces the contractile response induced by KCl in addition to increasing the sensitivity of smooth muscle to NO in mesenteric arteries of hypertensive rats.

This paper presents a new variant of the perceptron algorithm using selective committee averaging... more This paper presents a new variant of the perceptron algorithm using selective committee averaging (or voting). We apply this agorithm to the problem of learning ranking functions for document retrieval, known as the "Learning to Rank" problem. Most previous algorithms proposed to address this problem focus on minimizing the number of misranked document pairs in the training set. The committee perceptron algorithm improves upon existing solutions by biasing the final solution towards maximizing an arbitrary rank-based performance metrics. This method performs comparably or better than two state-of-the-art rank learning algorithms, and also provides significant training time improvements over those methods, showing over a 45fold reduction in training time compared to ranking SVM.

The resistance exercise protocol consisted of 10 sets of 10 repetitions and intensity of 40% of one repetition maximum. The reactivity of vascular smooth muscle was evaluated by concentration‑response curves to phenylephrine (PHEN), potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Rats treated with L-NAME showed an increase (p < 0.001) in systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) compared to the initial period of induction. No difference in PHEN sensitivity was observed between groups H and EH. Acute resistance exercise reduced (p < 0.001) the contractile response induced by KCl at concentrations of 40 and 60 mM in group EH. Greater (p < 0.01) smooth muscle sensitivity to NPS was observed in group EH as compared to group H. One resistance exercise session reduces the contractile response induced by KCl in addition to increasing the sensitivity of smooth muscle to NO in mesenteric arteries of hypertensive rats.

This paper presents a new variant of the perceptron algorithm using selective committee averaging... more This paper presents a new variant of the perceptron algorithm using selective committee averaging (or voting). We apply this agorithm to the problem of learning ranking functions for document retrieval, known as the "Learning to Rank" problem. Most previous algorithms proposed to address this problem focus on minimizing the number of misranked document pairs in the training set. The committee perceptron algorithm improves upon existing solutions by biasing the final solution towards maximizing an arbitrary rank-based performance metrics. This method performs comparably or better than two state-of-the-art rank learning algorithms, and also provides significant training time improvements over those methods, showing over a 45fold reduction in training time compared to ranking SVM.
