Perspective on Resilient Cities: Introduction and Overview
The urban book series, 2019
The world has moved from the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Developm... more The world has moved from the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to make the planet more sustainable: One focus of the SDGs to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” In recent times, different terms for cities— such as “smart city,” “resilient city,” “livable city,” “inclusive city,” and “world-class city,” etc.—have emerged. Traditionally, in the classification of cities in India—such as “class I-VI cities,” “metro city,” “mega city,” etc., population size was one of the major criteria; the city size was used to signify the level and number of functions it performs. Most of the world’s population today lives in cities and over time, due to the size of the population, various problems have emerged. Increasing urban population with urban-ward migration is responsible for many challenges faced by the cities around the world, especially in Asian, sub-Saharan Africa, and Indian cities. Cities such as Delhi and Mumbai are the worst affected by the large population base, in which the rapidly increasing population has severely affected capacity of cities. Due to resource constraints, it will be difficult in the future to provide all services to residents. In addition, unplanned growth will lead to many types of social, economic, environment, and health problems.

The suburban areas of the Delhi metropolitan region are undergoing development, as evidenced by the construction of industrial parks, office buildings, housing, and commercial malls for the new middle and wealthy classes. This study aimed to clarify the prevailing situation and problems on the urban fringe of Delhi by investigating the actual conditions of housing supply and the characteristics of residents in Manesar, an extension city of Gurugram in the Delhi metropolitan area. Field surveys were conducted in February 2016 and 2017 regarding the status of development in Sector 1, Manesar. The results revealed that 269 detached houses were constructed from among 536 plots, and 19 small apartments were built. There were 63 paying guest houses (PGs, privately rented houses) in the detached house blocks, and 19 group houses (condominiums or high-rise apartments) of the 55 that had been planned had been completed. In Manesar, there are many vacant plots and vacant houses because housing owners purchase plots and houses for investment. Many speculators manage rental houses because their prices and rents are cheaper than Gurugram and Manesar is promising in the near future for the plan of Delhi Metro. There are many PGs because there are few restaurants and convenience facilities in Manesar.

Urbanization processes as a result of population growth, migration and developing infrastructure ... more Urbanization processes as a result of population growth, migration and developing infrastructure initiatives has a direct impact on cultural heritage sites. This paper aims to monitor dynamics growth of urbanization phase that took place at Taj Mahal during the last decades and evaluate its impact to monuments and archaeological sites. Taj Mahal is in the list of UNESCO catalogue of world cultural heritage sites and monuments. GIS and remote sensing techniques have been used to prepare the temporal land use changes since the 1999. The spatial pattern of urban sprawl is studied and analyzed using archive time series medium resolution landsat ETM+ and TM satellite imagery. Unsupervised classification algorithms have been evaluated and examined for this purpose. The final outcomes revealed that a dramatic increase of the urban areas took place in the last years and as results significant pressure is expected on archaeological sites found in the periurban areas.

LANDSAT data is utilized for the number of applications such as environment study, digester and resource management. This study has been made to estimate, LST using Arc GIS over Agra, India, using LANDSAT 8 and 5 satellite data. The LST has been estimated with respect to Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values determined from the Red and Near Infrared bands. The Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) is retrieved directly from the Thermal Infrared bands. The present study focuses on ArcGIS Raster functions and Raster calculation using the thermal band 10 and 11 of Landsat 8 satellite and thermal band 6 of Landsat 5 on the month of April. The results are feasible to calculate NDVI, LSE, and LST with appropriate accuracy. In the last drive out the temperature variance in different land use and land cover area of Agra city, India.

A research proposal is a blueprint to conduct research work and a well-structured proposal provides smooth functioning for the proposed research. Generally, young researchers face various types of problem in structuring a good research proposal in absence of proper guidelines, steps and strategies. This paper aims to provide a general guideline to the students and researchers to develop a wellstructured research proposal for the purpose of PhD/dissertation/research projects, etc. The concept and significance of a research proposal, how to start research work, the process of producing and appropriate sections for a good research proposal has been discussed in great detail.

Migration with fertility and mortality is one of the crucial components of demographic variation.... more Migration with fertility and mortality is one of the crucial components of demographic variation. Due to unequal availability and distribution of resources and services in India people determined by various factors migrate from one place to another place to get the desired resource of the destination region. Various factors play a crucial role in the process of migration. This study is all about the migration profile of the Kurukshetra district of Haryana state in India. Kurukshetra is one of the most famous ancient locations in India and in present-day also it has its specific economic, social, cultural and political significance. Thousands of people migrate inward and outward from this district. Thus this research work analyses the spatialtemporal pattern of migration in Kurukshetra, various factors related to it, ruralurban, male-female migration and specific factors related to it.

Sustainable tourism, sustainable-tourism development, and sustainable-development principles are ... more Sustainable tourism, sustainable-tourism development, and sustainable-development principles are commonly used within the framework of sustainable development. Both tourism researchers and practitioners are trying to understand/develop, integrate, and apply the main concepts. In this process, the concept of sustainable-tourism planning was analyzed thoroughly, and the theory of sustainable strategies identified with appropriate optimal goals. The theoretical discussion has progressed considerably in this discussion at every forum across the nation. The problem is that the theoretical discussion seems to be too far ahead and too abstract compared with the development found on an operational level. Given the complexity of the issues surrounding the concept of sustainable tourism, the current chapter tries to provide a unified methodology to assess tourism sustainability based on a number of quantitative indicators. The proposed methodological framework (sustainable-tourism measurement...
