The purpose of present study was to stabilize curcumin food pigment by its complexation with divalent ions like (Zn 2+,Cu 2+,Mg 2+,Se 2+), in “green media ” and evaluate its stability in vitro compared to curcumin alone. The curcumin complexes were prepared by mechanical mixture of curcumin and sulfate salts of each metal (metal: curcumin 1/1mol) into unconventional and nontoxic glycerol/water solvent. Two stoichiometry of complex were obtained, 1: 1 and 1: 2 (metal/curcumin), respectively. On evaluation of in vitro stability, all complexes were found to provide a higher stability from curcumin alone. 1.

Effects of feeding a dry glycerin product (minimal 65% of food grade glycerol, dry powder) to 39 ... more Effects of feeding a dry glycerin product (minimal 65% of food grade glycerol, dry powder) to 39 multiparous Holstein dairy cows (19 control and 20 glycerin-supplemented; lactation number = 2.2 +/- 1.3 SD) on feed intake, milk yield and composition, and blood metabolic profiles were investigated. Dry glycerin was fed at 250 g/d as a top dressing (corresponding to 162.5 g of glycerol/d) to the common lactating total mixed ration from parturition to 21 d postpartum. Individual milk was sampled from 2 consecutive milkings weekly and analyzed for components. Blood was sampled from the coccygeal vein at 4, 7, 14, and 21 (+/-0.92, pooled SD) d in milk and analyzed for urea nitrogen, glucose, insulin, nonesterified fatty acids, and beta-hydroxybutyrate. Urine was tested for the acetoacetate level weekly by using Ketostix. However, little is known about the consequences of acute stress in the context of chronic stress, and about the related brain responses. In the present study we examined the physio-behavioural effects of a supplementation with a sensory functional food ingredient (FI) containing Citrus sinensis extract (D11399, Phodé, France) in a pig psychosocial chronic stress model. Female pigs underwent a 5- to 6-week stress protocol while receiving daily the FI (FI, n = 10) or a placebo (Sham, n = 10). We performed pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging (phMRI) to study the brain responses to an acute stress (injection of Synacthen®, a synthetic ACTH-related agonist) and to the FI odour with or without previous chronic supplementation. Cette etude a pour but de caracteriser les effets de deux composes aromatiques issus des huiles essentielles (CHE), l'aldehyde cinnamique (Ac) et le carvacrol (Cv). Introduction et but de l’etude La decouverte d’aromes fonctionnels capables de stimuler plaisir e... more Introduction et but de l’etude La decouverte d’aromes fonctionnels capables de stimuler plaisir et prise alimentaires pourrait aider a alimenter certains patients denutris ou fragiles, voire lutter contre certaines formes d’aversions alimentaires. Chez l’animal, de tels additifs alimentaires pourraient permettre de stimuler la croissance et de maintenir l’ingestion durant les transitions environnementales ou alimentaires. L’objectif de cette etude etait d’explorer les reponses cerebrales de porcelets exposes ou non depuis le sevrage a un arome fonctionnel utilise pour stimuler plaisir et motivation alimentaire. Materiel et methodes L’additif etudie a precedemment revele sa capacite a induire une preference alimentaire lors de tests de choix realises apres une transition alimentaire en periode postsevrage (Clouard & Val-Laillet 2014). Dans la presente etude, 16 porcelets ont ete exposes a partir du sevrage soit a un aliment standard (CTL, N =8), soit au meme aliment additionne de l’additif (ADD, N =8). A l’âge d’environ 2 mois, les animaux ont ete anesthesies puis soumis a deux sessions d’imagerie cerebrale par tomographie d’emission de positons (TEP) au 18F-fluorodesoxyglucose, durant lesquelles ils ont ete exposes aux flaveurs de l’aliment avec (FA +) ou sans additif (FA-). Les images cerebrales ont ete analysees sous SPM8 par le biais d’un modele a deux facteurs (aliment et stimulation), puis par des comparaisons deux a deux (CTL/FA + vs. CTL/FA-, ADD/FA + vs. ADD/FA-, ADD/FA- vs. CTL/FA +, ADD/FA + vs. CTL/FA-), avec un seuil de significativite des pics de clusters a P Resultats et Analyse statistique Un effet de l’aliment a ete observe sur l’activite du cortex prefrontal anterieur (CPFA) et dorsolateral (CPFDL), du putamen (PUT), du noyau caude (CAU), du globus pallidus (GP) et de l’amygdale (AMY), tandis qu’un effet de la stimulation a ete enregistre au niveau du CPFA, du cortex cingulaire dorsal posterieur (CCDP), du PUT, du GP et de l’AMY. Les comparaisons deux a deux ont par ailleurs revele plusieurs choses : i) les animaux jamais exposes a l’additif (CTL) detectent bien l’additif ajoute a la flaveur de l’aliment (FA + vs. FA-) puisque des modulations du CPFA et CCDP ont ete observees ; ii) les animaux habitues a l’additif (ADD) percoivent bien la disparition de celui-ci dans la stimulation FA- du fait de modulations du CCDP et du striatum dorsal (CAU et PUT) ; iii) la stimulation FA- chez les animaux ADD active davantage le CCDP, CAU et PUT que la stimulation FA + chez les animaux CTL ; iiii) en comparaison de la stimulation FA- chez les animaux CTL, la stimulation FA + chez les animaux ADD active davantage certaines parties du striatum dorsal (PUT et CAU) mais en desactive certaines autres (PUT, GP). Conclusion L’additif alimentaire teste est capable de moduler des zones cerebrales impliquees dans la memoire contextuelle et le traitement hedonique, differemment selon l’experience des individus avec l’additif. Certaines modifications du metabolisme cerebral pourraient illustrer une neophobie, notamment lorsque les animaux sont exposes a la flaveur d’un aliment non familier (FA + pour CTL, FA- pour ADD). Enfin, l’additif semble avoir un effet modulateur de l’activite du striatum dorsal, independamment de l’effet de familiarite. De plus amples explorations sont cependant necessaires pour identifier les reponses cerebrales specifiquement liees a la familiarite, a la valence hedonique, et a l’intensite de la stimulation.

Natural plant extracts are increasingly used as functional feed ingredients in animal husbandry a... more Natural plant extracts are increasingly used as functional feed ingredients in animal husbandry and food ingredients in human alternative medicine to improve welfare and health. We investigated in 20 growing pigs via fMRI the brain Blood Oxygen Level-Dependent (BOLD) responses to olfactory stimulation with two sensory functional feed ingredients, A and B, at two different concentrations. Functional ingredient A contained extracts from Citrus sinensis (60-80%), and ingredient B contained a mixture of extracts Oreganum vulgarae (40-55%) and Cymbopogon flexuosus (20-25%). Increased concentration of ingredients induced a higher activation in reward and cognitive areas compared to lower concentrations. Moreover, considering both ingredients at the highest concentration, the ingredient A elicited higher brain responses in brain areas involved in hedonism/pleasantness compared to ingredient B, and more specifically in the caudate nucleus and orbitofrontal cortex. Our findings shed new light in the scope of emotion regulation through olfactory modulation via sensory functional ingredients, which opens the way to further preclinical studies in animal models and translational research in the context of nutrition, welfare, and health.

Among the essential oils and their active components, 4 molecules are of great interest and are studied in this paper: carvacrol, thymol, cinnamaldehyde, and diallyl disulfide. In particular, we examined the transfer of essential oil components from animal feed to milk. Because these components could confer an undesirable odor or taste to milk and derived products or interfere with milk processing, it is necessary to quantify their residues in milk.
