Virginia Sanchez is an independent historian who enjoys research. Her articles have appeared in the New Mexico Historical Review, New Mexico Magazine; La Herencia; and in historical, cultural, and genealogical journals, such as Colorado History, the New Mexico Genealogist, and the Colorado Hispanic Genealogist. Virginia has presented her research to historical and genealogical societies in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. In 2008, she was recognized in Denver by the Hispanic Annual Salute for her contributions to the Hispanic community in the area of history. Her ancestors were among the first soldiers/colonists to settle the Spanish Province of New Mexico in 1598. Virginia is a member of the Colorado Historical Society, the New Mexico Historical Society, and several Hispanic genealogical societies.

The Espinosa brothers of Conejos County, Colorado Territory were accused of numerous murderers th... more The Espinosa brothers of Conejos County, Colorado Territory were accused of numerous murderers that occurred between 1862 and 1863. Although from a biased perspective, stories about their escapades were published in books, aired on television programs about Western desperados, and posted on the website, Legends of America. These stories tell the same version about the alleged murders. This article assumes readers are somewhat familiar with the story about the Espinosa Gang or the Espinosa Brothers of southern Colorado. Their story has been so incredibly sensationalized by Anglo news correspondents and editors who promoted violence and prejudice. Briefly, Felipe de Nerio Espinosa, his brother José Vivián Espinosa, and a supposed nephew, named Vicente Espinosa, allegedly committed atrocious serial crimes throughout southern Colorado. Although I do not focus on this allegation, a review of prior research, historical documents and events, combined with newly found military records and oral histories, provide an alternative explanation about a place and time when the murders occurred and why Espinosas were violently hunted down and killed. Further, I review the events that resulted in the collective violence against the Espinosa Gang during the early 1860s from the view of the early Hispano settlers living in southern Colorado Territory.
