visited Muthanmudi in Pallivasal village under Pallivasal Panchayat, Idukki at 11 am on 11 th May, 2016 in the presence of Agriculture Officer and ADA in-charge of that panchayat. The phenomenon of “Yellow rain” was observed in this area first on 1st May, 2016 and was being continued till the day of visit. The occurrence of yellow spots on the leaves were found to be very localized covering approximately eight acres of land in the hillock owned by three households namely, (i) RajappanP.K.Kunnumpurath, Muthanmudi (ii) Martin Rinson, Chirakkal, Muthanmudi and (iii) Titus Thomas, Mundaekal House. The symptoms of yellow/faint yellow/ white coloured dried spots/ deposit was seen on the leaves of almost all crops
grown in that area. The intensity of spots were higher in 2-2.5 ac area of P.K. Rajappan,Kunnumpurath and the intensity gradually reduced as the distance increased and in the periphery of the 8 ac area only few plants/ leaves had the spots.

White grub (Holotrichia sp.) are considered as important pests. Aphids are responsible for transmitting viral diseases viz., chirke and foorkey. Major threat to the crop is the
widespread occurrence of fungal and viral diseases causing considerable damage and consequent loss in devastating proportions. The fungal disease Colletotrichum blight has
devastated the large cardamom plantation and is the cause of concern for severe crop loss and decline in plant population in the recent past. The pests and diseases affecting
large cardamom and their management practices are presented.
Policy on usage of Plant Protection Formulations in Small Cardamom Plantations in India.
• Plant Protection Formulations (PPFs) are essential prerequisite of cultivation of small cardamom for achieving optimum productivity under prevailing conditions in India.
• Plant Protection Codes (PPCs) for cardamom are aimed to achieve sustainability in agricultural system through an approach inclusive Integrated Pest Management (IPM), application and promotion of bio-control agents, and judicious application of plant protection formulations in agriculture thus gradually reducing the dependence on chemicals in India.
• PPC shall focus on scientific and responsible approaches of chemical management viz., proper selection, judicious usage, safe storage and proper disposal, occupational health and safety and green chemistry.
• PPC is committed to reduce the anticipated adverse impact of pesticides on human beings and the environment to as lowest as possible. This can be achieved through a coordinated approach including effective governance, review and monitoring.
