Such transformations significantly influence the entire food processing chain from agricultural production, through food processing to the distribution of food to customers. As Supply Chain Management (SCM) emphasizes on seeing the whole supply chain as one system, Decision Support Systems (DSSs) are used to define the influence of strategic issues on logistics and to identify the most effective processes to be performed because of the strategic issues with the highest either positive or negative impact on the logistics. Managers try to deal with the current complex environment using the Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP) process. The purpose of this paper is to propose a strategic DSS framework, which combines both the strategic management process and the SISP process to provide a holistic approach to effective decision-making in logistics in the agrifood industry.

Practically, most of the companies deal with returns of some nature because of issues such as marketing returns, damage or quality problems, overstocks, refurbishing, or remanufacturing. Handling returns present a great challenge for companies, while in many cases becomes a necessity for keeping customers’ satisfaction to a certain level. Reverse logistics operations in a supply chain may be considered as an introduction to innovative services of a company’s portfolio. They may have an important impact on a firm’s strategic performance in terms of market effectiveness, as well as, internal cost efficiency. Through reverse logistics innovation, it may be possible to expand revenue through market growth due to account customization, service augmentation, and improved customer satisfaction. Reverse logistics is becoming an area of compet...

This approach aims to support rather than replace traditional evaluation approaches, by focusing on the input, output and behavioural effects of public R&D funding. This study employs as an evaluation model an adapted impact analysis model of the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES), including additionality theory and other evaluation methods. In addition, an evaluation tool is proposed in which R&D indicators are arranged in portfolios. Furthermore, a data repository mechanism is designed, and a computational tool for computing and displaying evaluation results is employed-a customised webbased application centred by an ontological evaluation model. The methodological approach is articulated, explained, illustrated and discussed by employing R&D programmes granted by the Greek funding agency. The

Drawing on existing research the aim of paper is to explore differences arising between trust in the traditional and in the electronic business to business relationship. In addition, an overall research framework is developed which links trust formation to three dimensions: the type of interaction, the stage of the relationship lifecycle and the type of transacting organizations. These dimensions are further examined in different relationship scenarios. Finally, implications for the agri-food industry are examined.

Both factors have created a business reality where success in the collaboration practises followed, may result in improvements on the competitive position of enterprises. The paper starting from the basic business activity of the individual enterprise, looks into the chain, network and cluster collaborative practises and analyses their characteristics and the implications for SME's. In addition, it provides insights regarding the opportunities, the benefits, the requirements and the risks related to each collaborative practise. The article finally argues that different collaboration practises are required, as enterprises and the industrial sectors where they operate present distinctive characteristics.

Marketing transformation and integration between the partners’ internal and external activities and relationships are the prerequisites in order to combine their core competencies creating dynamic virtual collaboration networks. In this paper several e‐partner relationship management paradigms are illustrated and categorized according to the degree of integration and e‐marketing/business transformation. The proposed integrated e‐partner relationship management solution offers a systematic process for ensuring that specific partnerships criteria are developed and managed in the most beneficial way for the involved parties in virtual environment.

Cooperatives are an integral part of the agricultural sector and the logistics cost impacts the pricing policy of the agricultural products, taking into consideration the value added of all trading partners along the supply chain. Many governments all over Europe pay special attention to this issue trying to make agriculture prosperous by using information systems and technology (IS/IT). The aim of this study is to identify the present situation of ICT applications regarding the value added logistics processes of the Greek agricultural cooperatives. Especially, the role of specific information systems is examined in order to estimate the impact of logistics applications and partners in the cost of the products. For this purpose a questionnaire regarding the above issues was given to the Greek cooperatives. Almost all the cooperatives are characterized as Producers' Cooperatives and are focused more on packaging and warehousing logistics operations. The application of Quality systems in the Greek Agricultural Cooperatives has been imposed mainly by the customers' concern for the quality of the product and the protection of the environment. Although the respondents recognize the contribution of ICT in their supply chain management, the research concludes that the majority of Greek cooperatives is not aware of IT/IS in great extent and this derives from the inadequate organizational culture and education.

Those goals can be attained if the supply chain as a whole is efficiently coordinated, minimizing total channel inventory, eliminating bottlenecks, compressing time frames and abolishing quality problems. The paper reviews the changes taking place in the fresh produce sector globally and identifies the importance of supply chain management for Greek agricultural cooperatives. The case study focuses on three companies: one of the biggest U.K. wholesalers and two Greek cooperatives, with the aim of identifying opportunities to remove cost and add value in a number of activities in the peach supply chain. This is achieved by reviewing the current situation of the two Greek peach cooperatives, which at the moment are exporting in the UK market, and by reviewing their activities. Opportunities to remove cost and add value have been identified in activities such as: input purchase, inventory management, packaging-labeling, order-delivery process, new product development and customer portfolio management. Close collaboration in the fresh produce supply chain, is seen as the way forward for all the parts in the supply chain although benefits may not equally split among the members of the supply chain.

To enable seamless integration of various kinds of IT applications into a healthcare network, a commonly accepted framework based on international relevant standards has become an urgent need. However, there is much marketplace confusion today in the healthcare domain, due to the variety of overlapping or complementary interoperability standards and initiatives, which have evolved over the years addressing integration of applications at different levels. This chapter provides a brief overview of the most relevant Electronic Healthcare Record standards, by examining the level of interoperability and functionality they provide, in terms of context, structure, access services, multimedia support, and security, to provide healthcare decision-makers and system integrators with a clear perspective regarding the capabilities and limitations of each standard.

To do so, a comprehensive measurement instrument that integrates the existing theoretical and empirical literature knowledge on CIS adoption in hospitals was developed. Methods: A secured web-based survey of 107 Chief Information Officers in Greek public hospitals (both rural and urban) was conducted, in order to identify the availability of various Clinical Information Systems, their functional sophistication capacities (i.e. computerized activities/processes), the intensity of their use, as well as their level of integration. The clinical domains which were assessed by the instrument include: (1) Patient management, (2) Physician Support, (3) Nursing Support, (4) Emergency Department, (5) Operating Rooms (6) Laboratories, (7) Radiology and (8) Pharmacy. Results: A total of 70 questionnaires were completed by CIOs online (through a dedicated web-survey platform), which represents a response rate of 65,4%. Our findings indicate that Patient Management Information Systems (e.g. Admission-Discharge Transfer Systems and Outpatient Management Systems) as well as Pharmacy and Laboratory Information Systems have been adopted so far by the vast majority of Greek public hospitals (>68,6%) and are utilized by end-users on a regular basis. Overall findings demonstrate a moderatehigh level of functional sophistication for these systems but a significantly low level of integration. Adoption of Outpatient (15,7%) and Inpatient Electronic Medical Record Systems (22,9%), Nursing Information Systems (28,6%), Computerized Physician Order Entry Systems (14,3%), as well as Telemedicine systems for diagnostic purposes (14,3%) was found to be significantly low, confirming that Greek public hospitals have failed so far to successfully incorporate and exploit a wide range of CIS/T to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of patient care services.

Due to the specific characteristics of the sector, Internet's huge potential has not been fully exploited yet, still remaining a new communication tool. This paper aims at giving empirical insights regarding the use of Internetbased applications in the agri-food supply chain, by focusing on the Greek fruit canning sector. In particular, the paper identifies companies' perceptions regarding perceived benefits, constrained factors and motivation factors towards the use of Internet-based applications. Results indicate that companies recognise benefits arising from the use of Internet, however they still use traditional ways when communicating with their partners. Regarding transportation issues, while companies' overall satisfaction is rather moderate and differs significantly from the importance placed on a number of criteria, companies are still sceptical in using Electronic Transportation Marketplace * .

The development of human factors engineering has reflected the technological development, particularly as it is represented in the transition from manual tasks through supervisory tasks to planning tasks. In this paper the design requirements of an information system for inventory management are investigated, applied on a case study for lot size calculation. Current trends in basic requirements of the design at the syntactic level of the system are reviewed; however, since it is no longer considered sufficient to exclusively examine the syntactical aspects of the system, this study is concerned with the development of a conceptual framework of a modelling environment for inventory management, which takes into account semantic/cognitive characteristics of the user/manager.
