A shortage of effective teachers disproportionately affects children from poor and marginalized backgrounds. This study investigates the qualities, mindsets and behaviours of effective teachers who work with disadvantaged children using the Varkey Teacher Ambassador community. Our hope is that the findings from this study will inform policy makers across the globe and lead to improved policies to attract, develop, and retain effective teachers to serve the most disadvantaged students.

This paper discusses the impact on teacher qualifications and earnings of public financing of pri... more This paper discusses the impact on teacher qualifications and earnings of public financing of private education. As societies become more frustrated with government-run schools, policies to provide public funds for private schools--for example, tuition subsidies, vouchers, or tuition tax credits--become more attractive. However, it is important to understand how elastic is the supply of private schools when agreements to provide public funds are enacted. Two of the key justifications for such agreements are that: (1) private schools provide a given quality of schooling at lower costs; and (2) public schools might respond positively to having some competition from private schools. Both of these justifications ultimately depend on whether private schools can expand the supply of schools under such agreements. The single most important determinant of the supply flexibility of private schools under such agreements is the elasticity of supply of teachers of a given quality. The paper sheds light on this important question by analyzing the effects of public schools on the qualification and salaries of private-school teachers. (Contains 27 references.) Although teacher compensation schemes have been criticized by economists, largely because of their perceived rigidity, only a limited set of studies seem to consider their details. Most research on teacher compensation has focused on how well teachers are paid relative to comparable individuals in other occupations. 60 One exception is Morduchowicz , which reviews the salary structures of several Latin American countries and describes the most common determinants of teacher pay.

In this paper, we focus on the roles that race, ethnicity, and academic skills play in predicting... more In this paper, we focus on the roles that race, ethnicity, and academic skills play in predicting whether high school students persist along each of the various steps of the path into teaching. We show that the challenge of creating a racially and ethnically diverse teaching force is not primarily one of influencing the occupational decisions of minority college graduates. Instead, the critical challenge is to increase the high school graduation, college enrollment, and college graduation rates of minority youth. We use a sequence of four samples originating in the sophomore cohort of High . We explore high school sophomores' career transitions along each step of the path into teaching-high school graduation, entry into college, college graduation, and entry into teaching.
