Stafne bone cavity (SBC) is an unusual bony defect of the mandible, first described by Edward C.S... more Stafne bone cavity (SBC) is an unusual bony defect of the mandible, first described by Edward C.Stafne in 1942. SBC is described as an unusual, asymptomatic, unilateral, well-defined radiolucent area with corticated border on the lingual cortex of the mandible between the inferior border of mandibular canal and the lower body of the mandible. The most accepted concept of etiology is due to the entrapment or constant strain of the deranged salivary gland on the lingual cortex of the mandible. In this case series we have described the innocuous nature of SBC found incidentally on panaromic radiograph, and further evaluation done by clinical and Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Both the cases were asymptomatic with no signs of swelling or other clinically significant features. Hence, surgical intervention was not indicated, due to squelch nature of SBC, hence patients were advised for periodic follow up once in 1 year.

These are exocrine glands that make, modify, and secrete saliva into the oral cavity, mainly to facilitate mastication, swallowing, speech, lubrication, taste perception and also helps in maintaining good oral hygiene. These are classified as major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual glands) and minor salivary glands. Further classified as serous, mucous and seromucous glands based on their secretions. Salivary glands have already been a topic of research and interest in both health and disease. Recently a new pair of salivary glands commonly addressed as Tubarial Salivary Glands have been identified serendipitously on a fusion imaging modality. The gland is named based on the anatomic location which is found on tubarial cartilage that supports the entrance of the auditory tube. Therefore, the article aims to highlight the anatomy, physiology and various other perspectives of these Tubarial Salivary Glands and their significance in the human body.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a radiographic imaging technique that yields precise three-dimensional images of the maxillofacial region. For more than a decade now CBCT has been used for dental and maxillofacial imaging and its availability and use are increasing continuously. This has necessitated a review of the various application of CBCT in dentistry.

Sonographic elastography is a new technique for measurement of the tissue stiffness, and is curre... more Sonographic elastography is a new technique for measurement of the tissue stiffness, and is currently under investigation for tissue characterization in several anatomic sites. In recent years, real-time Ultrasonography elastography (USE) modes have appeared on commercially available clinical ultrasound machines, stimulating an explosion of research into potential oncologic and non-oncologic clinical applications of USE. Preliminary evidence suggests that USE can differentiate benign and malignant conditions accurately in several different tissues. The principles underlying elastography are that tissue compression produces strain (displacement) within the tissue – which is lower in harder tissues than in softer tissues and that malignant tissues are generally harder than normal surrounding tissue. Therefore, elastography might yield clinical information useful in diagnosing cervical metastasis and improving prognosis in oral cancer .The purpose of this review is to highlight a promising new ultrasound technique, known as elastography, which measures the characteristics of tissue compliance.

The extraosseous location is the peculiar feature of this type of tumour, which is otherwise similar to the classical ameloblastoma. It appears in the gingiva and oral mucosa and it usually does not show any bone involvement on radiographs, except for saucer shaped erosion of underlying alveolar bone. Recurrence is considered uncommon. We report a case of peripheral ameloblastoma of maxillary gingiva.

Salivary gland tumors are a relatively rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions. Pleomor... more Salivary gland tumors are a relatively rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of the salivary gland that consists of a combination of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. The tumor most commonly arises from the parotid (60-70%) or submandibular glands. Intraorally palate is the common site followed by lips and buccal mucosa. It develops less frequently in a minor salivary gland, presenting as an intraoral mass present on the palate. Here, we present a case of pleomorphic adenoma of the palate with pain. The clinical, histopathological aspects, and treatment of tumor are discussed in the present paper.

It is a life-threatening mucocutaneous disorder where early diagnosis and management are of utmost importance. Erythema Multiforme results from a cell-mediated immune reaction against a precipitating factor. It is clinically characterized by a ‘‘minor’’ form and a ‘‘major’’ form. In the Erythema Multiforme minor, only one mucous membrane is affected and usually is the oral mucosa. As the prevalence of the disease is increasing and the survival rate has remained low for decades, it is essential to diagnose the disease at an early stage. Early diagnosis of the disease significantly increases the probability of the cure of oral squamous cell carcinoma with minimal impairment and deformity of the associated structures. Various methods in the diagnosis of Oral cancer are visualization methods, vital staining which includes -Toluidine Blue, Lugol's iodine, Methylene blue, laboratory based diagnostics-Biopsy, salivary biomarkers, Light based diagnostic tools, salivary biomarkers, advanced imaging modalities. This article reviews the conventional and latest diagnostic methods which aids in not only early detection but also in accurate treatment planning of oral cancer.

Cone beam imaging – an imperative arm in implant planning

Dental implants are highly preferred over other rehabilitation techniques, as they have a more conservative approach with minimal damage to other adjacent structures. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of anatomical variations in maxilla and mandible on CBCT images of patients referred for dental implants. In our study, a total of 102 CBCT images comprising of 60 males & and 42 females with mean age of 50 years & 45 years were analysed. We found that in approximately 50% of the cases, the anterior loop of mental nerve was seen and lingual foramen was identified in the anterior part of the mandible in about 20% cases. Two-dimensional radiographs have been used for a long time as the only diagnostic tool in implant dentistry. However, radiographs may seem to be adequate for patients with wide residual ridges but CBCT effectively brings together prosthetic and surgical considerations which are important for beauty, restoration and prosthetic indices.

Efficacy of Panoramic Radiography Versus Clinical Evaluation as a Diagnostic Tool - A Cross Sectional Study

The commitment of the dental profession in delivering the highest quality of care to each of its ... more The commitment of the dental profession in delivering the highest quality of care to each of its individual patients and applying advancements in technology and science has been continually improving the oral health status of the population globally. Radiographs can help the dental practitioner evaluate and definitively diagnose many oral diseases, disorders and conditions. Hence the present study aims to compare the clinical features and findings with the panoramic radiographic features and the frequency to detect various occult findings which were undetected clinically. Methodology: A total of 130 patients above 10 years of age inclusive of both genders were taken as sample size. After an informed consent from all the study subjects and institutional ethical committee clearance, a thorough clinical examination was carried out under optimal illumination and recorded on a pre designed Performa. This was followed by a panoramic radiographic screening. The pathologies which were taken into consideration, clinically (C) and radiologically (R) to check for their association in the study included: Dental caries (C 1 and R 1 ) • Periodontal bone loss (C 2 and R 2 ) • Condylar changes (C 3 and R 3 ) • Any occult/incidental findings (C 4 and R 4 ) The data was analyzed using Chi-Square test. Results: The association in above mentioned 4 groups was found to be 99% (significant p < 0.05), 94% (significant p = 0.44), 84% (significant p = 0.32) and 11% (p > 0.05 -statistically insignificant) respectively. Radiographs have been an important aid in guiding the dental practitioner evaluate and definitively diagnose many oral diseases and conditions. The use of panoramic radiography as an additive tool to the clinical examination in oral evaluation would enhance the global oral health thereby proving to be an essential diagnostic tool.
