Violence against LGBTQIA+ people as a form of genocide

This essay deals with the inclusion of systematic violence against gender and/or sexual minoritie... more This essay deals with the inclusion of systematic violence against gender and/or sexual minorities in genocide terminology. Throughout history, especially since the definition of genocide emerged after the Second World War, LGBTQIA+ people as an oppressed minority have been excluded in genocide terminology, which has been a hot topic in the framework of queer and transgender politics. The focus will be on a number of case studies including concentration/work camps for LGBTQIA+ people in Nazi Germany, Fidel Castro's Cuba and later on in today's Chechen Republic, as well as death penalties for gays, which still exists in some Middle Eastern and African countries, with Brunei being the latest exception. Moreover, a different approach to define genocide in its root will be given through the example of the AIDS pandemic and its links to genocide, while the essay will also provide a brief overview of LGBTQIA+ rights across the world and how it links to genocide terminology. Nonetheless, the aim of this essay is to emphasise the meaning of why it is crucial to include these forms of oppression in terms of genocide/genocidal violence and the significance it has for the improvement of LGBTQIA+ rights.

Comparison of International Media Coverage of the Syrian and Yemeni Crises and its links to Foreign Policy Making

Syria and Yemen are both countries in which the aftermath of the Arab Uprisings resulted in the e... more Syria and Yemen are both countries in which the aftermath of the Arab Uprisings resulted in the eruption of a domestic conflict into a multiplied proxy war. Since then, many international media channels started reporting on the on-going events that occurred, especially in Syria. In Syria, many global key players started to get involved in the conflict such as the US, Britain, France and Russia. Yemen was marked as an important territory for regional hegemons such as Saudi Arabia and Iran which are involved in a proxy conflict in various countries in the Middle East, two of them being Syria and Yemen. With the emergence of global and regional players as well as international media channels in both conflicts, the correlation between foreign policy making and media is questioned. This thesis aims to examine how foreign policy making and media influence one another by analysing in which way politics in media intertwine in the cases of Syrian and Yemeni crises.
