To do this, the concept of the "transport chain" is introduced and formalized. On the base of this overallmodel of the system, the optimization objectives are formulated with special respect on the local views of the different stakeholders that offer the different services along the transport chain. Additionally, the transport chain concept is used to couple existing models of the transportation domain by modularization into independent transportation steps and an interface between these steps that abstracts from the steps' implementation by focusing on guarantees for the service offered, only.

Such a complexity challenges the overall situational awareness during tactical network operations and improvment of network resilience. Before defining network states, different perspectives of resilience and robustness are reviewed to explore performance variability (Safety-II) in understanding network states. The applied methodology is focused on emergent disruptions of an ATM network. We consider that available data about Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Mamangement regulations reveal restorative mechanisms for tactical capacity planning. Therefore, we conducted statistical evaluations to provide quantitative measures for network state definitions. The offered methodology enables a transparent classification of non-nominal network situations considering critical and crisis states. The approach is demonstrated on a data sample covering six months in 2017. Results show, that quantitatively defined network states contribute to enabling balanced comparison of network KPIs and may enhance situational awareness of the Network Manager role. Such a visibility enables specification of different decision making frameworks by having more control on network states to keep performance levels. Lastly, potential advantages of analyzed regulation data are provided to address long term resilient planning extended to pre-tactical and strategic planning phases.

The purpose is to investigate the aerodynamic performance of a joined-wing aircraft model under subsonic flow conditions. The resulting test model wings are both complex and thin, and hence significant challenges surround the use of conventional machining due to vibrations from the cutting tools and non-trivial wing thinness. In contrast, additive manufacturing technique was able to overcome these fabrication issues, with a faster turnaround time, less material wastage and ease of design. However, surface finishing and cost issues associated with the additive manufactured components were observed during the study. In particular, significant deflections of the additive manufactured component were observed during testing, which could have explained discrepancies found between the experimental and numerical simulation results. Nonetheless, possible ways to correct these discrepancies will be described and discussed here.

In the present study, information on physical and statistical models is supplemented by the uncertainty that is inherent to the applied analysis modules and propagated through the complete design workflow. Using this method, the possibility arises to make a statement on the level of certainty with which one concept is preferred above another.

Parallel to the decreasing time and cost necessary to produce ATM data, computational requirements for storage and analysis of the bulk of data are steeply increasing. Compression is a key technology to deal with this challenge often referred to as big data science. In this paper, we propose a new technique for compressing 4D-trajectories of the Demand Data Repository provided by EUROCONTROL. While standard compression algorithms compress such a trajectory file as a large chunk of consecutive text, we propose to look at different streams in the trajectory files. We design encoding techniques for each stream separately. In our evaluation the whole traffic over Europe is compressed from more than 50 GB down to 1.42 GB, yielding a compression ratio of approx. 35:1, a reduction of more than 80 percent compared to the best standard compression technique. In addition, our new compression technique is almost 10 times faster than the best competitor. Therefore, we are convinced that efficient, yet fast, compression of 4D-trajectories is possible on modern hardware and should be exploited.

This paper proposes a method to find efficient system of systems configurations regarding drone range requirements and base locations to operate from. Using an heuristic optimizer, sensitivity analyses are presented for inspection flights of the German Railway system of Deutsche Bahn as well as the US natural gas pipeline system. It is concluded that longer drone ranges facilitate either more efficient mission designs or alternatively enable fewer bases of operations and thus less capital expenditure while limiting mission efficiency through increased average target approach distances. The average seat count of delivered single aisles has grown considerably. Single aisles are handicapped by lengthy boarding and deboarding times. Aircraft with twin aisle cabin layout may alleviate the boarding problem. But those aircraft may suffer from increased cost of operation. This paper studies how much better twin aisles fare in turnaround operations and how much more they cost to operate. These figures are analyzed for a selection of capacities and mission ranges in order to analyze where twin aisles offer benefits. The general finding is that twin aisles are more suitable above 240 seats capacity, but may offer superior economics even for lower capacities at short distances.

To assess the cost-benefit potential (climate impact mitigation vs. cost increase) of climate and weather optimized flight trajectories in the North Atlantic flight corridor, optimal control techniques are applied. However, the execution of multi-criteria route optimizations for an intercontinental route network and various weather patterns is computationally highly intensive. Since computational resources are limited, a reduced surrogate route network is generated and evaluated first with regard to the computational effort, the coverage in terms of available seat kilometers, as well as the accuracy of reproducing the original route network with regard to climate impact. The proposed reduced route network consists of 40 routes (original network: 1,359) and is able to reproduce the climate impact of the original route network with reasonable climate impact deviations of 2.5%. The evaluation of climate and weather optimized trajectories is performed for the top route of the surrogate network. The maximum climate impact reduction potential is differing strongly from 9% up to 60% for varying North Atlantic weather patterns. Averaged over the weather patterns, a maximum climate impact mitigation potential of about 32%, going along with a cost increase of about 8% has been estimated. However, at a cost penalty of 1%, a potential climate impact reduction of 24% has been observed.
