Most people live their lives in societies together with other human beings. We work together with... more Most people live their lives in societies together with other human beings. We work together with our work mates, spend our spare time next to our neighbors, maybe we form a family and raise children. Individual life-stories are enacted in collective arenas, where other individuals live at the same time. Everybody’s life is unique, but it takes place alongside other people’s lives in shared settings. This double and possibly contradictory quality becomes visible when people narrate their life-stories. Every individual life narrative must be possible to locate in collective arenas where other persons have lived at the same time and it must be compatible with the local society’s history that has taken place at the same time.
In my paper today, I want to share with you some thoughts about the connections between narrated ... more In my paper today, I want to share with you some thoughts about the connections between narrated personal memories and local, national and international history. According to my English dictionary, memory is-the sum of everything retained by the mind‖. Consequentially, very few elements of our ordinary human communication are not closely related to memories or at least to a high degree dependent on our mind's-ability to store and recall past sensations, thoughts, and knowledge‖, which is another of the definitions of memory given by the dictionary (Collins 1995). From the point of view of narrative analysis, there is no evidence that the rendering in narrative form of the mentally stored goods that we call memories would follow other compositional rules than the retelling of any other experiences whatsoever for which we have other scientific terms. The explanation is simply that no experience can be conveyed in narrative form until after it has happened.

This paper argues that playing computer games can be compared to traditional fairy tale telling s... more This paper argues that playing computer games can be compared to traditional fairy tale telling situations. Both fairy tales and computer games offer playful arenas for testing the limits of the physical reality, of social and cultural norms, and of moral values. The purpose of the research project described in the paper will be to collect material for a discussion about the cultural consequences of moral and ethical values being communicated in the ritual arenas of computer games.
