Ulrike Matis, Dr. med. vet. Dr. med. vet. habil., Dipl. ECVSProfessor of SurgeryDr. Matis graduated from the University of Munich in 1970, and obtained a Dr. med. vet. degree in 1972 and a Dr. med. vet. habil. (PhD) degree in 1981 from the same university. Dr. Matis was Professor of Surgery and Head of the Department of Surgery (including Ophthalmology and Radiology) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich from 1989 until her retirement in 2011. Since then she has been a consultant in a private companion animal clinic and has been active as a speaker and instructor at national and international veterinary courses and congresses. Dr. Matis was President of AO Vet International (1996 – 1998), President of the European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology (1998 – 2000) and President of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (2005 – 2006). In 2001, she received the WSAVA Saki Paatsama International Award and in 2016 the Honorary Membership of ESVOT. Dr. Matis has published numerous scientific articles and textbook chapters in the field of companion animal surgery. She is co-editor of two radiology textbooks and two German editions of English-language textbooks on small animal orthopaedic surgery and has given more than 800 talks and lectures.

Ziel war, die Erfolgschancen der konservativen und operativen Therapie beim Magenbezoar des Kanin... more Ziel war, die Erfolgschancen der konservativen und operativen Therapie beim Magenbezoar des Kaninchens zu ermitteln, um Richtlinien fur die Indikationsstellung zu geben. Material und Methodik: In einer retrospektiven Untersuchung uber einen Zeitraum von 9,5 Jahren wurden die Krankengeschichten von 39 wegen eines Magenbezoars behandelten Kaninchen analysiert. Die Auswertung erfasste neben der Anamnese und den klinischen Symptomen die Laborbefunde (n = 12 Tiere), sonographische Bilder (n = 7) sowie Rontgenaufnahmen in zwei Ebenen (n = 39), teilweise mit Kontrastdarstellung durch Barium (n = 34) oder Luftinsufflation (n = 1). Ferner wurde das Behandlungsergebnis der 10 konservativ und 29 operativ versorgten Tiere erfasst. Bei 12 von 18 verstorbenen Kaninchen lag ein Sektionsbericht zur Klarung der Todesursache fur die Auswertung vor. Ergebnisse: Anorexie und Apathie stellten die Hauptsymptome dar. Der Artikel erlautert zunachst in einer Literaturubersicht die drei grundlegenden Techniken der MRA: TOF-Angiographie (Time-of-Flight-Angiographie), Phasenkontrastangiographie und Kontrastmittelangiographie. Neben physikalischen Grundlagen, technischen Voraussetzungen und Untersuchungsparametern sowie Vor- und Nachteilen der Verfahren werden die Zusammenhange zwischen Kontrastmittelapplikation und Untersuchungszeitpunkt diskutiert. Die Nachverarbeitung der MR-Bilder mit dem Verfahren der „maximalen Intensitatsprojektion“ (MIP) vermittelt einen dreidimensionalen Eindruck der Gefasarchitektur und verbessert das raumliche Vorstellungsvermogen, kann aber zusatzliche diagnostische Fallstricke aufweisen. In einer retrospektiven Analyse der MRT-Untersuchungen von Hunde- und Katzenpatienten der Chirurg... more In einer retrospektiven Analyse der MRT-Untersuchungen von Hunde- und Katzenpatienten der Chirurgischen und Gynakologischen Kleintierklinik der LMU Munchen wurde nach Patienten gesucht, bei denen MR-Signalveranderungen im Muskelparenchym oder in Sehnen chirurgisch, zytologisch oder histopathologisch bestatigt werden konnten. Die Untersuchungen wurden hinsichtlich Untersuchungstechnik sowie MR-Erscheinungsbild verschiedener Erkrankungen und traumatischer Veranderungen des Muskel- und Sehnengewebes evaluiert. Fettsupprimierende und flussigkeitssensitive Sequenzen sowie T1-gewichtete Bilder mit Fettsuppression nach Kontrastmittelgabe sind fur die Interpretation des Muskel- und Sehnengewebes besonders hilfreich. In... more Injuries to the lower jaw in cats occur frequently in the area of the temporomandibular joint. In most of these cases, successful treatment necessitates a temporary surgical occlusion of the jaw. After a brief survey of various occlusion methods, a simple technique is opted for in which labial reverse sutures of non-absorbable material are threaded through buttons. This is the preferred method of treatment employed by the University of Munich Department of Animal Surgery. During the past ten years, 107 cats were treated using this method. It was possible to check the healing process via clinical and radiological examinations in 72 of these patients. In a further 21 cases, information was obtained through questioning the owners. The collected data revealed that the method described above, which originally had been intended to temporarily occlude the jaw in polytraumatized cats, has proven to be an effective final therapy in most cases. Nine cats and one dog with intracranial meningioma, which underwent surgery at the Department of ... more Nine cats and one dog with intracranial meningioma, which underwent surgery at the Department of Veterinary Surgery, University of Munich, Germany were evaluated retrospectively. One cat died shortly after surgery whereas the remaining 9 animals survived between 8 to 43 months (mean, 21.9 months) after surgery. Relapse was seen in 2 cats shortly after surgery and these animals were re-operated. After surgery, computed tomography was performed to ascertain that the tumour was completely removed. Pre-operative symptoms disappeared rapidly after surgery, except central blindness which persisted. Initial clinical observations and results of in vitro studies using feline meningioma cells indicated that hydroxy-urea can prolong survival time of affected animals.

Evaluation of the medical records of 351 cats yielded 63 cats treated with dowel pinning, 35 cats treated with external coaptation and 14 cats treated with both methods within the same limb. All of the cats had been re-evaluated at an average of 2.8 years (six months – 15 years) postoperatively. Dowel pinning was superior to external coaptation when all fractured bones of a limb could be pinned. When internal fixation of multiple fractures was not feasible in all fractured bones due to comminution or fragments that were too short to pin, the outcome was not significantly different from cases treated with external coaptation alone. To assess the antinociceptive efficacy of transdermal (TD) buprenorphine (B) in dogs, a prospecti... more To assess the antinociceptive efficacy of transdermal (TD) buprenorphine (B) in dogs, a prospective, positive-controlled experimental study was performed in 10 healthy Beagles. In an open label crossover design, the dogs initially received intravenous B (IVB, 0.02 mg kg(-1)) as a positive control, followed by TDB (52.5 μg h(-1)) 4 months later. Blood was collected at regular intervals for determination of the plasma concentrations of B ([B]) and its metabolite norbuprenorphine. The antinociceptive efficacy was assessed using thermal and mechanical models of nociception. The peak concentration [B] was 1.54 ng mL(-1) (±1.98) 60 h after TDB application, although three dogs had no measurable [B] after TDB. Maximum thermal threshold (TT) was 52.6 °C (±0.48) at 1h after IVB administration and 51.63 °C (±1.01) 72 h after TDB application. The significant increase in TT indicated that effective antinociception was achieved beyond 36 h after the application of TDB, lasting until patch removal. There was hysteresis between [B] and the antinociceptive effect.

Following an introductory review of the literature, the symptoms, diagnostic procedures and aetio... more Following an introductory review of the literature, the symptoms, diagnostic procedures and aetiology as well as treatment, long-term results and prognosis of the individual forms of ileus are described and discussed, based on the clinical histories of 704 patients with ileus of the small intestine. Whereas ileal obstipation and other forms of obstructive ileus were revealed to have a fair prognosis, a long-term cure could be achieved in only half of the patients with either a string foreign body, intussusception or an intestinal adhesion. The prognosis in cases of malignant intestinal tumours, intestinal adhesions resulting from intra-abdominal tumours and mesenteric volvulus was hopeless.

Die klinischorthopadische und die radiologische Untersuchung des Patienten fuhren aufgrund unspezifischer Befunde oder zusatzlicher Veranderungen an derselben Gliedmase nicht immer zu einer klaren Aussage, sodass die Diagnosestellung weitere Verfahren erfordert. Material und Methoden: In einer retrospektiven Studie wurden die Daten von 15 Hunden mit einer Sesamoidose ausgewertet. Die Patienten gehorten zwei Gruppen an: Gruppe 1 umfasste 10 Hunde mit unklarem klinisch-orthopadischem Befund, bei denen eine Skelettszintigraphie erfolgte.
