I began working on April 2, 2014 as an engineer at Parametric Solutions, Inc. in Jupiter, FL. I devoted 8 years (2006-2014) as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) in Tullahoma, TN, which is affiliated with the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Majdalani. In December 2014 I graduated with a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. My dissertation is entitled "Helical Models of the Bidirectional Vortex in a Conical Geometry." In May 2012, I completed the requirements for a MS with a thesis over hypersonic vehicle technology. Born and raised in Nashville, TN I received a BS in Mechanical Engineering in May 2006 from Tennessee Technological University (TTU) Cookeville, TN. My research interests include fluid dynamics, partial differential equations, and hypersonics.

Current State of High Speed Propulsion: Gaps, Obstacles and Technological Challenges in Hypersonic Applications

The object of this study is to canvas the literature for the purpose of identifying and compiling... more The object of this study is to canvas the literature for the purpose of identifying and compiling a list of Gaps, Obstacles, and Technological Challenges in Hypersonic Applications (GOTCHA). The significance of GOTCHA related deficiencies is discussed along with potential solutions, promising approaches, and feasible remedies that may be considered by engineers in pursuit of next generation hypersonic vehicle designs and optimizations. Based on the synthesis of several modern surveys and public reports, a cohesive list is formed consisting of widely accepted areas needing improvement that fall under several general categories. These include: aerodynamics, propulsion, materials, analytical modeling, CFD modeling, and education in high speed flow physics. New methods and lines of research inquiries are suggested such as the homotopy-based analysis (HAM) for the treatment of strong nonlinearities, the use of improved turbulence models and unstructured grids in numerical simulations, the need for accessible validation data, and the refinement of mission objectives for Hypersonic Airbreathing Propulsion (HAP).

In this study, an exact Eulerian solution is derived for the bidirectional vortex in a conical ch... more In this study, an exact Eulerian solution is derived for the bidirectional vortex in a conical chamber. Our model is applicable to idealized representations of cyclone separators and liquid rocket engines with slowly expanding chamber cross-sections. The bulk fluid motion is assumed to be nonreactive, steady, rotational, inviscid, and incompressible. Our approach is founded on the Bragg-Hawthorne equation and seeks to overcome some of the deficiencies encountered by Bloor and Ingham (Bloor, M. I. G., and Ingham, D. B., “The Flow in Industrial Cyclones,” Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 178, 1987, pp. 507-519). Despite inevitable similarities with Bloor and Ingham’s model, ours is constructed using a judicious framework that connects the solution to the swirl number and the cone divergence angle. In consequence, a self-similar formulation is produced that is independent of the cone’s finite body length. closed-form representations for the principal variables This enables us able to characterize the problem by providing of flow motion. parameters of interest, the mantle divergence angle and the maximum latitudinal velocity are obtained explicitly. The mantle consists of a spinning cone that separates circumferential inflow region (outer vortex) from the central outflow (inner vortex). interface bisects the fluid domain at 60% of the cone’s divergence half-angle. Its precise determination helps to estimate the crossflow velocity responsible for mass transfer, or spillage as it were, from the outer vortex into the inner region.
