The peace movement that started after Solferino and led to the First Geneva Convention, which led... more The peace movement that started after Solferino and led to the First Geneva Convention, which led to the founding of the Red Cross, was also firmly rooted in The Hague towards the end of the 19th century. During the Conventions of The Hague of 1899 and 1907, a legal framework was established to deal with disarmament, the laws of war and war crimes. This included rules aimed at regulating the conduct of neutral countries in the case of war on land. This study discusses the fate of Serbian prisoners of war who, under that legal framework, reached the Netherlands either before 11 November 1918 because they escaped from German prisoner-of-war camps, or because they were repatriated under article X of the Armistice. Some of the Serbian soldiers died between 1917 and 1919 and were buried in the Netherlands. In an attempt to concentrate its war dead the Kingdom of Yugoslavia ordered to exhume the soldiers and transport them to a mausoleum in Jindřichovice, now in Czech Republic, in 1938.
