Resumo: O hipoparatireoidismo caracteriza-se por ser uma doença de cunho metabólico que implica n... more Resumo: O hipoparatireoidismo caracteriza-se por ser uma doença de cunho metabólico que implica na deficiência de cálcio sérico e pode ocasionar manifestações sistêmicas, incluindo calcificações cerebrais. Como método, foi realizado acompanhamento de caso clinico longitudinal, somando-se ao embasamento teórico em referências bibliográficas. O caso relatado e as publicações estudadas demonstram a importância de debater sobre o hipoparatireoidismo e suas consequências, evidenciando a necessidade de novos estudos, a fim de encontrar tratamento e diagnóstico precoce para a doença. O presente estudo trata-se de um relato de caso de uma paciente de 61 anos do sexo feminino que apresentou hipoparatireiodismo com posteriores calcificações dos gânglios da base e córtex cerebral. Assim, busca-se abordar os aspectos clínicos e diagnósticos dessa condição e suas consequências, destacando a importância do conhecimento das patologias para o seu diagnóstico e manejo precoce, além de agregar conhecimentos a literatura médica existente.

O comprometimento emocional dos alunos variou conforme a série, com diferenças significativas para os componentes da síndrome entre alunos com notas acima e abaixo da média, sendo o primeiro ano o mais afetado. Isto indica que, no curso estudado, a implantação da reforma curricular não foi um fator de proteção para a Síndrome de Burnout. Constatou-se também associação entre a síndrome e o rendimento acadêmico dos estudantes em disciplinas da primeira e da segunda série. São necessários estudos longitudinais sobre o assunto para confirmar as tendências encontradas e esclarecer a interferência de fatores que não puderam ser abordados neste estudo, considerado preliminar.

Tratou-se de um estudo descritivo-exploratório realizado em comissões de controle de infecções hospitalares e comissão institucional de prevenção a acidentes quanto à existência de normas escritas, realização de treinamentos para essas mesmas preconizações, existência de registros institucionais concernentes à biossegurança e existência de práticas de atenção à saúde dos profissionais e isolamentos de pacientes. Os hospitais são comparados segundo a presença de cada um dos itens analisados de acordo com sua classificação por porte, vinculação jurídico-financeira, dentre outras. Conclui-se que a situação geral é precária quanto à presença dos itens investigados, o que impele a considerar a necessidade de que se leve em conta, numa análise de qualidade hospitalar, também o cuidado com a vida dos seus trabalhadores.

Despite a certain crossover between scientific and non-scientific therapies, it has been empirica... more Despite a certain crossover between scientific and non-scientific therapies, it has been empirically shown that there is a lack of scientific and academic knowledge of healing and therapies that, by and large, respond to the epithet "spiritual". It is assumed that there is an abundance of these types of events in Brazil, of which there are probably records. An integrative review of academic reports of spiritual healing published by Brazilian researchers was conducted. Twenty-two studies were identified, the majority of which were ethnographic studies in religious contexts conducted by researchers from the field of social sciences, followed by the field of religious science, and the field of health (public health, nursing, medicine, and psychology). These studies use the concept of symbolic effectiveness to understand these phenomena. These findings underline the urgency of cross-disciplinary approaches to overcome the expressive dichotomy between nature and culture.

It has been previously demonstrated that religiosity and spirituality can help support people liv... more It has been previously demonstrated that religiosity and spirituality can help support people living with HIV. Despite this, little work has been undertaken on this theme. Using the PRISMA methodology, we reviewed academic literature from 2008 to 2020 to summarize how people living with HIV define spiritual needs. We found fifty-nine distinct types of approach that were related to this theme and were grouped into four main categories: religious needs, social needs, existential needs, and emotional needs. Religious needs were more frequently cited, including individual prayers, the ingestion of miraculous medicines, and so on. The study calls attention to the concept’s multidimensionality and the cultural differences in the included papers. It reveals the need of each culture to research, to find an adequate meaning of spirituality, and to cater to the spiritual needs for people living with HIV as part of their healthcare, before setting health policies.
To evaluate the immunogenicity of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in 52 nursing hom... more To evaluate the immunogenicity of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in 52 nursing homes residents aged ≥ 60 years, IgG antibodies to serotypes 1, 5, 6B, and 8 were measured by ELISA and compared before, and 1 and 12 months following vaccination. A significant immunological response for all serotypes was observed at 1 month after vaccination. The mean increase in antibody concentration was highly variable and ranged from 1.6 to 2.7. After 1 year, the mean concentrations remained significantly higher than prior to vaccination for serotypes 1, 6B, and 8, although there was a decrease in all mean IgG concentrations. Antibody levels were higher in men than in women, before and after immunisation. Post-vaccination values tended to be lower among subjects aged >75 years. Reduction in IgG concentrations by 33% 1 year after vaccination suggests that revaccination of institutionalised elderly people may be needed.

This study aimed to measure differences in the clinical progression of preterm newborns using two distinct periods in a university hospital: before and after using underwater bubble continuous positive airway pressure (ubCPAP). This is a retrospective study of VLBW preterm newborns with gestational ages less than or equal to 32 weeks admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The time series was divided into two groups: a pre-CPAP group ( n = 45) and a post-CPAP group ( n = 40). The post-CPAP group had fewer resuscitations, required fewer surfactant doses, spent fewer days on mechanical ventilation, and demonstrated less of a need for fraction of inspired oxygen > 30%. Objective: to describe the characteristics of the health assistance for pilgrims visiting the Nat... more Objective: to describe the characteristics of the health assistance for pilgrims visiting the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida and to investigate health care strategies in periods of peak of religious tourism. Methods: a descriptive study using outpatient medical records from 2011 to 2014, for a detailed analysis for the month of October 2014 and the operational documents for health care in periods of mass events in the medical clinic of the Sanctuary. Results: 95,011 people were assisted in the period, 2,266 in October 2014; the higher demand for assistance was from elderly individuals (33%), women (59%), and people from the Brazilian Southeast region (79%); there were no operational documents for specific actions for this period. Conclusion: the large number of visitors, associated with the frequency of mass events and the absence of an operating plan, may pose a serious public health scenario for that region.

Included studies focused on health professionals and had at least part of the course in a distance learning approach. The UK, the USA, Canada and Australia stood out within the palliative care research papers. Among the 590 articles chosen, only 14 papers were included in this review due to the inclusion criteria. 9 used a mixed approach and 5 used online methods. The length of the courses, however, varied extensively and several methods were found to have been employed for teaching purposes, including videos, audio, images, poetry and simulation cases. Pre-post intervention clinical study conducted with total laryngectomees submitted to olfaction rehabilitation by means of the Nasal Airflow-Inducing Maneuver (NAIM) using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT), Olfactory Acuity Questionnaires, a Monitoring Questionnaire, and the University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UW-QOL). Participants were 45 total laryngectomees. Before olfaction rehabilitation, 48.9% of the participants had their olfactic abilities classified as anosmia, 46.8% as microsmia, and 4.4% were considered within the normal range. Later, the spreading of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and the efforts of American Hospital Association and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations to control it increased the magnitude of the model in US hospitals. This increased magnitude was supported by social and health administrators' demands. 2 The implementation of a prospective payment system in the 1980s also generated great enthusiasm for infection control in the United States. 3 Since then, the CDC model for the evaluation of risk factors associated with nosocomial infections has been improved. 4 In Brazil, the infection control movement began with government regulation in 1983, 5 including isolated initiatives from some hospitals before this time. A despeito dos trânsitos oficiosos entre terapêuticas científicas e não científicas, identifica-s... more A despeito dos trânsitos oficiosos entre terapêuticas científicas e não científicas, identifica-se de forma empírica um desconhecimento científico e acadêmico de terapêuticas e curas que, de modo geral, respondem pelo epíteto de “espiritual”. Supõe-se que haja no Brasil uma abundância de eventos deste tipo, dos quais provavelmente há registros. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar uma revisão integrativa de relatos acadêmicos de curas espirituais publicados por autores brasileiros. Identificaram-se 22 estudos, a maioria pesquisas etnográficas em contextos religiosos, realizadas por pesquisadores da área das Ciências Sociais, seguida das Ciências das Religiões, da área da Saúde (Saúde Coletiva, Enfermagem, Medicina e Psicologia), que utilizaram o conceito de eficácia simbólica para a compreensão desses fenômenos. Tais achados ressaltam a urgência de abordagens transdisciplinares que possam superar a dicotomia expressiva do recorte ideológico entre natureza e cultura.

ABSTRACT While religion is associated with the cultural drift-with ecumenical sharing and inter-religious dialogue-overcoming the challenges that deserve discussion in our society, the spirituality is discussed and valorized by Theology, Religious Sciences, Human Sciences, Religions and Health. We have seen these concepts being used equivalently, bringing misunderstandings that can split both spirituality and religion from their real meanings. The basis for implementation of infection control practices in Brazil has been the Centers for Di... more The basis for implementation of infection control practices in Brazil has been the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) model. 1 In the United States, this model was developed as a process begun in the late 1950s. Later, the spreading of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and the efforts of American Hospital Association and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations to control it increased the magnitude of the model in US hospitals. This increased magnitude was supported by social and health administrators' demands. 2 The implementation of a prospective payment system in the 1980s also generated great enthusiasm for infection control in the United States. 3 Since then, the CDC model for the evaluation of risk factors associated with nosocomial infections has been improved. 4 In Brazil, the infection control movement began with government regulation in 1983, 5 including isolated initiatives from some hospitals before this time. A despeito dos trânsitos oficiosos entre terapêuticas científicas e não científicas, identifica-s... more A despeito dos trânsitos oficiosos entre terapêuticas científicas e não científicas, identifica-se de forma empírica um desconhecimento científico e acadêmico de terapêuticas e curas que, de modo geral, respondem pelo epíteto de “espiritual”. Supõe-se que haja no Brasil uma abundância de eventos deste tipo, dos quais provavelmente há registros. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar uma revisão integrativa de relatos acadêmicos de curas espirituais publicados por autores brasileiros. Identificaram-se 22 estudos, a maioria pesquisas etnográficas em contextos religiosos, realizadas por pesquisadores da área das Ciências Sociais, seguida das Ciências das Religiões, da área da Saúde (Saúde Coletiva, Enfermagem, Medicina e Psicologia), que utilizaram o conceito de eficácia simbólica para a compreensão desses fenômenos. Tais achados ressaltam a urgência de abordagens transdisciplinares que possam superar a dicotomia expressiva do recorte ideológico entre natureza e cultura.

Repetidamente temos visto esses conceitos serem utilizados de forma equivalente, acarretando equívocos que podem desviar tanto a espiritualidade quanto a religiosidade de seus reais significados. Considerando a grande variedade e complexidade de definições relativas à religião e à espiritualidade, o grande desafio destas páginas será discutir e mostrar a importância desses conceitos para o estudo de suas relações com a saúde. ABSTRACT While religion is associated with the cultural drift-with ecumenical sharing and inter-religious dialogue-overcoming the challenges that deserve discussion in our society, the spirituality is discussed and valorized by Theology, Religious Sciences, Human Sciences, Religions and Health. We have seen these concepts being used equivalently, bringing misunderstandings that can split both spirituality and religion from their real meanings. Considering the wide variety and complexity of definitions regarding to religion and spirituality, the great challenge of this paper is to discuss and show the importance of these concepts for the study of the relationship between health and spirituality.
