With this perspective, CuO impregnated γ-Al2O3 (CuO/γ-Al2O3) hybrid materials were synthesized as effective and affordable electrocatalysts and investigated for AEO in alkaline media. Structural investigations were performed via different characterization techniques, i.e., X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The morphology of γ-Al2O3 support as interconnected porous structures rendered the CuO/γ-Al2O3 nanocatalysts with robust activity. The additional CuO impregnation resulted in the enhanced electrochemical active surface area (ECSAs) and diffusion coefficient and spiked the electroca...

The methanol extract was subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening using standard procedures. The results indicated the presence of alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, reducing sugar, saponins, phlobatanins and terpenoids. The antimicrobial activity was measured by disc diffusion method. Data revealed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa was inhibited by both methanol and ethanol extracts at the concentration of 2mg disc {21.8mm (68.12%) and 21.3mm (66.56%)}. Similarly, methanol extract reduced the growth of Bacillus subtilis by 17.1mm (74.34%) at the concentration of 1 mg disc. However, ethanol extract showed a good activity of 18mm (121.6%) and 20.6mm (112.5%) against Xanthomonas maltophilia at concentrations of 1 and 2 mg disc-1, respectively. Aqueous extract showed 16 mm (53.33% Z.I) against Escherichia coli at 2 mg disc. Klebsiella pneumoniae was fou...

However these environments lack many of the cues that facilitate natural language processing in other conversational settings and different types of social media. Public chat data often features players who speak simultaneously, use jargon and emoticons, and only erratically adhere to conversational norms. This chapter presents techniques for inferring the existence of social links from unstructured conversational data collected from groups of participants in the Second Life virtual world.

In this context we present a personalized mobile-based home monitoring system aiming to support heart failure patients in daily self-monitoring of their condition. An Internet-linked tablet computer and various portable and wearable sensing devices are employed in order to monitor the patient's physiological parameters and enable healthcare professionals to review patient's status remotely. The proposed system supports the activation/deactivation of system functional components by healthcare professionals during run-time operation, the unobtrusive remote upgrade of the mobile system through a private application distribution channel, and the automatic recording of user interactions, in order to meet the patient's ongoing individualized preferences and healthcare needs. Preliminary results from an observational cohort study indicate that heart failure patients find the proposed system acceptable and consider it useful for self-monitoring their condition.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Malachite Green Dye and Pharmaceuticals Using Co:TiO2 Thin Films
Advanced Materials Research, 2014
The crossed beam pulsed laser deposition technique was successfully used to prepare Co:TiO2 thin ... more The crossed beam pulsed laser deposition technique was successfully used to prepare Co:TiO2 thin films with different cobalt concentrations and a band gap as low as 2.0 eV. The aim of this work is to report the application of TiO2 thin films modified with different amounts of cobalt (Co:TiO2) as catalysts in the degradation of a malachite green (MG) solution as well as in solutions containing pharmaceutical wastes such as the analgesics diclofenac and naproxen. For catalyst activation an UV lamp with emission at 254 and 404 nm was used as the energy source. It was followed the decrease in the characteristic absorption band of the different polluted solutions over the reaction time. In general terms, the obtained results showed that samples containing cobalt exhibited better photocatalytic performance than the undoped TiO2 films. An optimal cobalt content in the film was found that provided the highest degradation for the different solutions.

The scope of the study consist of all securities traded on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the month end value of the All Share Index from 2001-2010 constitute the data analyzed. The serial correlation technique of data analysis was used to test for independence of successive price movement and the distributive pattern while runs test was used to test for randomness of share price movement. The result of the serial correlation shows that the correlation coefficients did not violate the two-standard error test. Furthermore, the Box-Ljung statistic shows that none of the serial correlation coefficients was significant and the Box pierce Q statistics shows that the overall significance of the serial correlation test was poor while the result of the distribution pattern shows that stock price movements are approximately normal. on the basis of this findings ,we conclude that successive price changes of stocks traded on the floor of the Nigerian Capital Market are independent and random therefore, the Nigerian Capital Market is efficient in the weak-form.

The present work deals with the complex formation during the sorption of cadmium on mixed oxides.... more The present work deals with the complex formation during the sorption of cadmium on mixed oxides. The various mixed oxides of iron and silicon like M 0.25Si/0.75Fe , M 0.50Si/0.50Fe and M 0.75Si/0.25Fe were prepared by sol-gel method. The selectivity of adsorbents towards Cd 2+ ion was found to be in the order M 0.75Si/ 0.25Fe > M 0.50Si/0.50Fe > M 0.25Si/0.75Fe. Dissolution of silica from the surface of mixed oxides was found in a similar trend as the selectivity order for Cd 2+ sorption, which points towards the formation of ternary complexes on the surface of the solids. Further, the order of the silica dissolution from the mixed oxides was same as determined by both EDX analysis and graphite furnace atomic absorption (GFAA) spectrophotometer. The complex formation on the surface of the solids has also been confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. The thermodynamic parameters for the sorption of Cd 2+ ions on all the three mixed oxides were also evaluated which show that the metal uptake process is endothermic and spontaneous in nature.

Inhibitory effects of ketoconazole (KTZ), cimetidine (CIM), and erythromycin (ERY) were examined ... more Inhibitory effects of ketoconazole (KTZ), cimetidine (CIM), and erythromycin (ERY) were examined on CYP3A activities. Midazolam 1'-and 4-hydroxylation (MDZ1'H and MDZ4H) were used to determine CYP3A activities in hepatic microsomes obtained from cats (n=4). The results showed that, all the examined drugs inhibited the reactions in a noncompetitive manner. The inhibitory constants (Ki) of KTZ were 2.80 0.70 and 115 28 M for MDZ1'H and MDZ4H, respectively. Those of CIM were 3.13 and 3.27 mM and of ERY were 3.14 and 6.41 mM for MDZ1'H and MDZ4H, respectively. Mechanism-based inhibition was also examined in this study. KTZ significantly reduced MDZ reactions in a time-dependent manner; while CIM and ERY did not. Also, the effects of KTZ and CIM on the pharmacokinetics of quinidine (QUN) were studied. KTZ or CIM (10 mg/kg/day, for one week) was given orally to cats (n=5). QUN (2 mg/kg, i. v.) was injected 2 hr after the last dose of KTZ or CIM. The analysis of the obtained pharmacokinetic parameters showed that, KTZ significantly reduced total body clearance of QUN by 35%, while CIM did not. These results suggest that, KTZ inhibits CYP3A activities (both in vitro and in vivo), but CIM does not. In clinical practice, therefore, KTZ may result in inhibition based drug-drug interaction with CYP3A substrates in cat patients, whereas CIM and ERY are unlikely to lead to interaction involving CYP3A substrates.

Solubilization in terms of hydrophobic interactions of amphiphilic hemicyanine dyes by micelles o... more Solubilization in terms of hydrophobic interactions of amphiphilic hemicyanine dyes by micelles of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate was studied. The critical micelle concentration was determined by a specific conductivity method. The water-micelle partition coefficient (K x) of these dyes was determined using a differential absorbance technique. The standard free energy change of solubilization (DG°p) and free energy change per methylene group of the dyes, DG°(CH 2) at 25°C was also calculated. K x , DG°p, and DG°(CH 2) were also calculated using both conductivity and differential absorbance data. Lengthening of the dialkyl chains of the hemicyanine dyes led to greater hydrophobic interaction and consequently enhanced solubility within micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate.

The critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of the two surfactants in the presence of small amounts of these additives were determined by a conductivity method at 25°C. The micelle-water partition coefficient, Kx,and the standard free energy change of transfer, AG °, of each additive from water to micelles were also calculated. Kx and AG O of phenol and benzyl alcohols between bulk water and CTAB micelles were also determined by a differential spectroscopic method at 25 °C.

The interactions of dyes with cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were studied by measuring their visible absorption spectra as a function of surfactant concentration below and above their critical micelle concentrations. Owing to lower hydrophobicity of the dyes, the electrostatic interactions between the dyes and the surfactants seemed to play an important role in the penetration of the dyes into the surfactant micelles.

Nine maize progenies were developed by manual pollinations during summer 2004 and were evaluated ... more Nine maize progenies were developed by manual pollinations during summer 2004 and were evaluated along with two checks during 2005. Data were recorded on number of ears plot-1 , grains ear-1 , grains row-1 and grain yield h-1. Significant amount of variability was observed among the progenies for all the traits. Outcross progeny of Genokrome Hybrid 2 produced the highest grain yield (6302.6 kg ha-1), followed by Genokrome Hybrid 1 (5811.6 kg ha-1). Genokrome Hybrid 1 produced maximum number of grains row-1. Similarly outcross progeny of hybrid Babar produced maximum number of ears plot-1. Overall results showed that the out cross progenies of different hybrids showed better performance than open pollinated checks. This suggests that out crossing helps avoid inbreeding depression as may be expected for open pollination under natural conditions, where at least some of the progeny could result from self pollination due to synchrony of pollen shedding and silking.
