Sigmund Freud, considered to be the “father of psychology”, developed psychoanalysis as a method, making it applicable to visual representations in contemporary culture. Three concepts offered by psychoanalysis – identification, scopophilia, and narcissism – illustrate the relationship between visual representations such as magazine fashion images, advertisements, shop displays, and their spectators/consumers (Hall, 2013). In Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, Freud claimed that a component of human sexuality is scopophilia, a pleasure in looking (Hall, 2013). Freud argued that scopophilia can be guided by narcissism, a fascination with the human form (Hall, 2013). He developed the mechanism of identification, allowing individuals to identify with the external objects around them through two kinds of relationship (Hall, 2013). One is the relationship an individual has with the object. This involves focusing sexual drives upon another person, creating the desire to have that person (object cathexis) (Hall, 2013). The other involves an identification where the individual shares a similarity with an external person. The individual shapes his/her ego after that person and has the desire to become him/her (identification) (Hall, 2013). Combining these concepts, Freud’s ideas of psychoanalysis theory have been applied by feminist theorist Laura Mulvey in film studies, which developed the notion of the gaze. With new innovations evolving on a daily basis, the gap between the virtual and physical world decreases as people, including, teenagers, children, businessmen, lawyers and so forth continue to depend on their valuable smartphones or other computing devices, to keep updated with the latest trend or maintain their social lives with those close to them. One specific technology that has progressed in the modern world today is Facebook, a social networking site which has crystallized the idea of people and technology being dependent on each other.
Existing research in communication studies focuses on examining the capabilities of smartphone te... more Existing research in communication studies focuses on examining the capabilities of smartphone technology. By providing access to the internet, social network services over the years have adapted smartphone usage to enhance the social media experience of their users via mobile applications. Scholars have established researches on behavioral effects of mobile use prior to sleep mostly among young adolescents. None however have aimed to study the mobile users’ self-perception of this behaviour. This study was conducted to investigate and understand what factors motivate students’ usage of smartphones prior to sleep. The study involved 6 Undergraduate students between the ages of 19-21 to participate in semi-structured interviews. Findings suggest that students’ usage of their smartphone is habitual, having no direct correlation with addiction. Participants’ smartphone usage primarily involves using social networking applications to maintain social circles. This research is appropriate for those interested in understanding electronic devices in association to human interactions.
