Dr. Susanne Urban (born 1968 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany) finished her Ph.D. in 2000 on “Central-Verein and its strategies regarding Jewish self-defence against Antisemitism between 1893 and 1938” at Moses-Mendelssohn-Centre/ University Potsdam.
Since November 2015 she is Managing Director for the SchUM-Cities-Association, and therefore part of the challenge of the Federal state Rhineland-Palatinate to inscribe the Jewish heritage in the three Cities of Speyer, Worms and Mainz to UNESCO World Heritage.
May 2009 to November 2015 she was Head of Historical Research and Education at the International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen, Germany.
In 2004 she was Fellow Researcher at Yad Vashem’s Research Institute and afterwards up to 2009 employed in the Yad Vashem Educational Department.Before this she was employed e.g. at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt in the Exhibitions and Educational Department (1990-2009) and was on the editorial staff of Jewish Journal TRIBUNE (1994-2004). She has published e.g. on topics such as the Bricha, Youth Aliyah and Anti-Semitism and also created teaching units for various age groups. Her recent research focuses on Displaced Persons, Children as survivors of Nazi Persecution and Early Testimonies.

2013 kuratierte ich als Leiterin der Abteilung Forschung und Bildung im International Tracing Ser... more 2013 kuratierte ich als Leiterin der Abteilung Forschung und Bildung im International Tracing Service (ITS) eine Ausstellung zu Displaced Persons (DPs). Es waren Abertausende Dokumente zu sichten, eine Auswahl fiel schwer. Ein Dokument, nicht einmal eine Seite füllend, fiel mir seinerzeit auf: eine Liste mit den Namen von rund 15 jüdischen DPs, Studierende der Universität Marburg, unter Fürsorge der United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). Mir war klar, dass ich hier auf ein Randphänomen der jüdischen DP-Gesellschaft gestoßen war. Einen detaillierten Blick in genau diesen studentischen Mikrokosmos innerhalb des jüdischen DP-Lebens hat nun Jeremy Varon unternommen. Der Autor, Associate Professor of History at the New School in New York City, hat die Geschichten und die Zeitumstände, die Nöte und den Bildungshunger, die Hoffnungen und Enttäuschungen der jüdischen Studierenden untersucht. Varon beleuchtet einige dieser Lebens-geschichten näher – ausgelöst durch persönliche Begegnungen. So entsteht eine Matrix aus Fakten und Lebensgeschichten. Veron verzichtet auf eine breite Einführung in die politischen und strategischen Rahmenbedingungen der alliierten DP-Politik und gibt auch einen eher groben Überblick zur Geschichte jüdischer DPs. Dies tut dem Buch und seiner Fokussierung gut. Varon verweist vielmehr auf die vor allem englischsprachige Literatur zu jüdischen DPs. Es fehlen jedoch etliche der relevanten deutschsprachigen Werke, unter anderem jene von der Gedenkstätte Bergen-Belsen herausgegebenen Publikationen, aber auch die des Nürnberger Instituts für NS-Forschung und jüdische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. 1 Es stellt sich auch die Frage, weshalb er keine Dokumente aus dem Archiv des ITS verwendete. Jedenfalls könnten die Sammlungen des ITS, zugänglich unter anderem im USHMM, in Jerusalem in Yad Vashem und der Wiener Library London, das Buch, die Geschichte der jüdischen DPs als Studierende und ihre individuellen Geschichten wunderbar ergänzen. Wer sich mit DPs befasst, kommt am Archiv des ITS, gleich wo auf der Welt die Bestände digital eingesehen werden, nicht vorbei.

Susanne Urban " I was separated from my family … never heard a word from them again " 1 Frühe Eri... more Susanne Urban " I was separated from my family … never heard a word from them again " 1 Frühe Erinnerungen von Child Survivors Der Beitrag setzt sich mit den im Archiv des International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen bewahrten Akten des alliierten Child Search Branch (CSB) auseinander und möchte diese als frühe Zeugnisse Kindüberlebender vorstellen. Zunächst werden jedoch Ursprünge und Aufgaben des CSB beleuchtet. Danach werden die individuellen Fallakten und die Interviews, die mit den Kindern und Jugendlichen geführt wurden, in ihrer Struktur beschrieben. Auch soll geklärt werden: wer führte diese Interviews zu welchem Zeitpunkt weshalb durch? Welches Muster war dafür entwickelt worden? Im Anschluss zeigen Auszüge aus einigen, thematisch gebündelten Aussagen, dass die Stimme des Individuums trotz der Formbögen Raum erhielt. Hierbei stehen Akten überlebender jüdischer Kinder im Zentrum. The article will regard and discuss the individual Case Files of the Allied Child Search Branch (CSB) kept in the archives of the International Tracing Service (ITS) in Bad Arolsen as early testimonies of child survivors of the Holocaust. After describing the origins and functions of the CSB, we will explain the form and structure of the case files and the interviews conducted with children and young people. Further, the article will investigate the identity of the interviewers, the time at which and the purposes for which the interviews were conducted, and their design. Excerpts from testimonies will illustrate the fact that the interviews provided space for individual children's voices to be heard in spite of their standardized format. The article is based on files on surviving Jewish children and the interviews they contain.

ShUM is an acronym of the first letters of the medieval Hebrew names of three cities in Germany: ... more ShUM is an acronym of the first letters of the medieval Hebrew names of three cities in Germany: Shin (Sh) = Shpira = Speyer; Vav (represented as U) = Warmaisa = Worms; and Mem (M) = Magenza = Mainz. Susanne Urban, the director of the Association of ShUM Cities on the Rhine — Jewish World Heritage, writes that ShUM is more than an abbreviation, and is certainly not simply a way to link the names of three cities. She describes the different narratives related to these cities, their history, their place in world heritage, today's tourism — and today's reviving Jewish communities. Here, sitting in my office, looking down at the medieval synagogue in Worms, I can see a small monument to Rashi, the great Jewish sage who lived from 1040 to 1105 and spent part of his youth studying in the once-renowned yeshiva in Worms. I love this statue and how the wisdom seems to flow out of the very coat of this scholar. Here I sit, in Worms, one of the so-called ShUM cities, and can feel the fascination that this era inspires. ShUM is an acronym of the first letters of the medieval Hebrew names of three cities: Shin (Sh) = Shpira = Speyer; Vav (represented as U) = Warmaisa = Worms; and Mem (M) = Magenza = Mainz. ShUM is more than an abbreviation, however; and it is certainly not simply a profane linkage of the names of three cities. Many Jews, and most mediaevalists with knowledge of Jewish history of that period, either carry a clear image of what ShUM means today and what it meant in the past, or they derive from the acronym a number of associations regarding the Jewish experience in the Middle Ages: from life in medieval ghettos, to Crusaders-era and other pogroms, to Jewish spaces that saw the evolution of paradigmatic architecture as well as Jewish scholarship. ShUM was one of THE places to be for Jews in the Middle Ages. Someone who learned, taught, and disputed in ShUM shuls and synagogues and linked himself with ShUM scholars belonged to the Jewish elite. ShUM formed a community that had a profound influence on the culture, religion, and jurisdiction of the European Jewish Diaspora. Today, stone witnesses – synagogues, cemeteries, and ritual baths – together with the religious accounts and commentaries that are still avidly studied in 2016, illustrate even now the immense and enduring significance of the ShUM cities. But how do these stone witnesses " speak " to the thousands of visitors – Jews and non-Jews alike — who flock to these sites now as tourists? Rebuilt men's synagogue, Worms.
