Artificial Realities: Virtual as an aesthetic medium in architecture ideation, Symposium, Lisbon, 2019

[Laurie Anderson, 2016] 'There is a third function, just as important as reasoning [Homo sapiens] and making [Homo Faber]-namely, playing [Homo Ludens]'. [Huizinga, 1938] Working on the paradigm of the submerged archeological site of Pavlopetri [in Peloponnese, south Greece], we reflect on the concept of the virtual monument. The virtual monument can function as a research medium, as a mapping tool, as an 'open document'. Simultaneously, it sets an immersive environment for the users to wander and interact, via the VR technology, turning them into digital flaneurs. The users follow personalized paths and interact with the virtual monument. Thus, subjective narratives are being constructed. The approach of the identity of the historical heritage can be achieved through layers of hypothetical images, projections, interlinks of causes and results. Based on that idea, the hypotheses become scenarios, enhanced scenarios that reflect on the users' narratives. These narratives take form as new, instant, ephemeral monuments. The ephemeral monuments, disturbed reflections of the primal monument, reconstruct the memory, creating an archive that approaches the 'real'.
