The contribution of sleep disorders to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for patients with this degenerative neurological disease are not well known. To evaluate the impact of insomnia symptoms, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and poor sleep quality on HRQOL in a cohort of patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. We enrolled a convenience sample of 66 adults seen in the University of Miami Movement Disorders Clinic between July 2011 and June 2013. Participants completed validated questionnaires to determine insomnia symptoms, OSA risk, depression, anxiety, and HRQOL. All patients underwent unattended polysomnography to confirm OSA. Results were compared for those with and without insomnia symptoms. Principal component and regression analyses were performed to evaluate determinants of HRQOL. Participants were predominately Hispanic males with mild to moderate Parkinson's ...

Initial concentrations of L-Dopa content varied from 4.84 to 7.60%. The quality of the Mucuna bean varied depending on the processing. While soaking the beans in water favored partial elimination of L-Dopa, with an increased efficacy in elimination and an increase in water uptake into the bean if the water temperature was at least 66°C, soaking times that allowed for sufficient L-Dopa removal were rather long for practical home preparation of food. However, by soaking the beans at 60°C with changes of water every 12 h, L-Dopa retention decreased 22-30% of the original value in 48 h, which is a retention similar to soaking for 96 h without change of water.

Methods: In the last 4 months of 2006, 176 patients with diagnosis of RA were attended in the Immunorheumatology Service at the Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia (HNCH) of Lima and 68 patients had the inclusion criteria. Of them, 41 patients were younger than 60 years old (ARIE group) and 27 were 60 years old or older (ARIT group

Chronic renal disease (CRD) is a disease with a strong impact on the childhood Mexican population with short-range limiting and serious consequences. Poverty and a social environment devoid of social justice hinder timely medical attention and long-range rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to determine the differences regarding sociodemographic features in patients under treatment at Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gómez, with a 6-year difference: patients diagnosed in 2003 as compared to those diagnosed in 2009.

Since its reawakening in 1999, major eruptions occurred in 2001, 2006, 2008, 2010 – 2014 producing regional ashfalls, extensive pyroclastic flows and small lava flows, Violent Vulcanian eruptions began in May of 2010 and since then Tungurahua, produced a sequence of well-separated activity phases characterized by Vulcanian and Strombolian behavior. In 2013, Tungurahua erupted four times with mostly strombolian activity lasting between 17 and 39 days. Periods of quiescence between eruptions were from 40 to 70 days. The first eruptive phase in 2014 began after 75 days of quiescence, on January 30. The seismic activity increased drastically few hours before the paroxysmal phase which took place on February 1 at 22:13 UTC and lasted for about 6 hours. After this phase, seismic activity was dominated by explosions quakes, tremor and signals associated to venting. A deformation pattern,...

Two hypotheses were tested: (a) Systematic divisions will increase the proportion of equity responses, and (b) Equal distributions will be justified on the basis of the sameness of the characters' effort or ability. The subjects were 742 Brazilian undergraduates. The results indicated that the equity rule was used

Orthorexia nervosa behavior in a sample of Brazilian dietitians assessed by the Portuguese version of ORTO-15

Although it is still not officially recognized as an eating disorder, previous studies have discussed its frequency in some groups and a fifteen-question test (ORTO-15) was developed elsewhere to assess ON behavior. The present study aimed to evaluate ON behavior in a sample of Brazilian dietitians after testing the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of ORTO-15. A total of 392 dietitians answered an online version of the test. The answers were analyzed regarding ON tendency, according with the scoring grid proposed by its authors. Exploratory factor analysis was performed and internal consistency was assessed. It was found that three questions of the test presented loadings lower than 0.5. The 12 remaining question formed 3 factors with internal consistency of -0.51, 0.63 and 0.47. The answers of the participants to these questions revealed a tendency to orthorexic behavior, mainly regarding aspects such as: making food choices conditioned by worry about health status, evaluating food rather from nutritional quality than from its taste, believing that consuming healthy food may improve appearance, discrediting the influence of mood on eating behavior and banning food choices considered by them as eating transgressions. There is no evidence of the validity and reliability of the ORTO-15 with the initial psychometric evaluation performed. Further analyses are needed. Nevertheless, it was possible to observe a high frequency of orthorexic behavior among the studied Brazilian dietitians. However, additional studies are needed to completely understand dietitians behavior toward ON.
