In Taiwan, learners have few opportunities to experience cross-cultural communication in English. To create an authentic EFL classroom, this one-year action research study carried out three collaborative intercultural projects using web-based tools (online forums, weblogs, Skype, and email) in a 7 th grade EFL class. The projects were designed to improve students' language skills and intercultural communicative competence (ICC). To triangulate the findings, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to collect the data; specifically, questionnaires, interviews, and document analyses were used to investigate the learners' responses and learning processes. The results revealed that the participants had strong positive attitudes towards technology-enhanced intercultural language learning (TEILI), which enabled the learners to experience authentic language learning that fostered linguistic competence and ICC. The findings suggest that TEILI approximates real-life learning contexts by allowing students to use a language for the same purposes that they will use it outside school.

This study employed an online questionnaire survey, and 136 males and 204 females participated in the survey. The results of this study showed that females exhibited better preventative health behaviors than males, including hygiene habits, social distancing and behaviors intended to help others mitigate the epidemic. Anxiety regarding COVID-19 infection encouraged individuals to adopt hygienic habits and social distancing measures rather than to help others mitigate the epidemic. Hygiene habits improved the individual’s psychological well-being. Helping others mitigate the epidemic improved the individual’s psychological well-being and social well-being and contributed to reducing individual depression. However, the preventative health behavior in...

Therefore, how to cultivate citizens’ health literacy, especially electronic health (eHealth) literacy that is closely related to the Internet, may be seen as a way to reduce the financial burden of the national healthcare systems, which is the responsibility of every citizen. However, previous studies on medication adherence have mostly been conducted with chronic disease patient samples rather than normal samples. Teachers are not only the main body of school health efforts, but also role models for students’ healthy behavior. Therefore, understanding differences in eHealth literacy beliefs among schoolteachers would be helpful for improving the existing health promoting programs and merit specific research. Aims: The present study identified th...

Therefore, this study mainly explored the relationships among participants’ sociodemographic status, COVID-19 knowledge, affective attitudes, and preventive behaviors. Method: This study adopted an online survey, involving a total of 136 males and 204 females, and used a cross-sectional study to investigate the relationships between variables including gender, age, COVID-19 knowledge, positive affective attitudes (emotional wellbeing, psychological wellbeing, and social wellbeing), negative affective attitudes (negative self-perception and negative perceptions of life), and preventive behaviors (hygiene habits, reducing public activities, and helping others to prevent the epidemic). Results: The majority of participants in the study were knowledgeable about COVID-19. The mean COVID-19 knowledge score was 12.86 (SD = 1.34, range: 7...

According to the hospital-based lung cancer register database, a total of 2883 lung cancers were diagnosed in 2883 patients between January 2007 and September 2017, which were divided into four groups according to smoking and screening status. A comparison was performed in terms of clinical characteristics and outcomes of lung cancer between the four groups. For non-smokers, age, gender, screened status, tumor size, targeted therapy, and curative surgery were independent prognostic factors of overall survival for lung cancer subjects. However, screened status and gender were not significant prognostic factors for lung cancer survival in smokers with lung cancer. For the non-smoker group, about 4.9% of lung cancer subjects (N = ...

However, few literature discusses these two factors simultaneously. Moreover, gender differences are associated with health literacy and beliefs about medicines. Therefore, it is important to scrutinize the multiple relationships between college students’ eHealth literacy and beliefs about medicines and the gender difference was also examined. OBJECTIVE This study aims to (a) scrutinize the multiple relationships between college students’ eHealth literacy and beliefs about medicines and (b) analyze gender differences in eHealth literacy and beliefs about medicines. METHODS We used questionnaire which included age, gender, three-level eHealth literacy, and beliefs about medicines to collect data. 475 valid data were obtained to analyze by performing independent t-tests and canonical correlation analyses. Media literacy, which includes authors and audiences (AA), messages and meanings (MM), and representation and reality (RR) domains, is a new approach to teaching youth to make smarter health decisions. However, it is not clear which domains are the most important for media literacy education. OBJECTIVE To investigate the associations among individual factors, media literacy, and dietary supplement use. METHODS The survey instrument included demographic items, a dietary supplements media literacy scale (DSMLS), and DS use items (users or nonusers, types of DSs, current use of DS, and intention for future DS use). The DSMLS is an 11-item instrument designed to assess college students’ AA, MM, and RR media literacy in relation to DSs. A total of 467 Taiwanese college students participated in the study. Factors related to cyberbullying, including gender and education level, were also examined. We used cyberbullying in online games scale to investigate the prevalence of students. Among 1112 respondents with valid questionnaires, 81% (n = 902) responded their demographic information. Participants comprised elementary students (n = 268, 29.7%), junior high school students (n = 223, 24.7%) and senior high school students (n = 411, 45.6%). Among them, 62.7% (n = 565) were males, and 37.3% (n = 337) were females. Our study revealed that cyberbullying and cyber-victimization behavior from Willard's (2007) eight classifications indeed existed in Taiwanese adolescent players, although the frequencies varied from person to person. Compared with primary and junior high school students and girls, senior high school students and boys were found to have more experience with various types of cyberbullying as both the perpetrator and the victim. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences between victims and bullies in the perception of the seriousness of CB outing acts. Therefore, to keep students from engaging in these deviant behaviors and becoming victims, schools and teachers should provide assistance that varies from student to student.

This study attempted to measure the relationship between a broader concept of eHealth literacy and dietary behaviors, in contrast to previous studies that focused solely on functional eHealth literacy. College students may put themselves at increased risk by consuming unsafe foods or not following accepted food safety practices. It is necessary to clarify the mechanisms whereby the three levels of eHealth literacy (functional, interactive, and critical) affect the four aspects of dietary behavior (consumer health, balanced diet, regular eating habits, and unhealthy food intake) in order to develop an effective eHealth literacy educational program to promote healthy behavior among college students. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between eHealth literacy and dietary behaviors. MET...

Studies have found that individuals with higher eHealth literacy are more likely to use preventive care services and to have effective interactions with their physicians. In addition, previous studies have revealed a gender difference in the utilization of physician access and outpatient services. Nevertheless, few studies have explored the effect of the three levels of eHealth literacy (functional, interactive, and critical levels) on the four aspects of health services utilization (type, site, purpose, and time interval). It is unclear whether the associations between these three levels of eHealth literacy and the four aspects of health services utilization among college students are positive or negative. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations among gender, eHealth literacy, and health services utilization. We used the eHealth Literacy Scale, a 12-item instrument designed ...

A stronger negative effect was found in highly ethnically concentrated classes. Upward comparisons were found to reinforce depression, decrease self-esteem, and reduce school belonging in aborigines-only classes but not in mainstream classes. Two pathways-selfesteem and school belonging-were found to process the negative indirect effects on depression and academic and social self-efficacy. The indirect effect through school belonging was particularly strong in the aboriginesonly classes compared with the mainstream classes. The suppression effect showed that when self-esteem and school belonging were sustained, the aboriginal students in aborigines-only classes could increase their social self-efficacy through upward comparisons.

Specifically, we investigated students' current self-reported personal AD, their perception of peers' AD, the climate of academic integrity and their awareness of AD's seriousness. Furthermore, we sought to explore the relationship between AD behavior and several variables. In total, 605 students from Mainland China (n = 368) and Taiwan (n = 237) were recruited to participate in the study. All the participants perceived that they were less involved in AD than their peers, and students from both areas ranked the gravity of AD offenses similarly. However, Chinese students generally reported higher rates of improper credit attribution, fraudulence, and falsification than their Taiwanese counterparts. Finally, two regression models revealed gender, perception of peer AD, and awareness of AD's seriousness were significant variables in terms of predicting self-reported personal AD, and there existed interactions between the students' perception of peer AD and gender. Witnessing peers' misconduct influenced males more than females in terms of engaging in AD for both Mainland Chinese and Taiwanese students.

The students' perceptions of the writing course were also examined. An experimental PR + TF group and a comparison TF group, with a total of 107 undergraduate students majoring in nursing, participated in this study during the fall semester of 2011. The results revealed that the students in the TF + PR group demonstrated greater improvements than those who received only TF in terms of holistic writing skills and the subscales of content, organization, grammar, mechanics, and style. The PR perceptions of the TF + PR group learners and the manner in which they adopted strategies for coping with peer feedback are discussed.

Two interactive tutoring strategy patterns are investigated based on the taxonomical e-moderating model of Salmon. In addition, the tutees’ online learning behaviors and experiences and perceptions of e-tutoring interventions are explored. This study found that the variations in the tutors’ labeling intervention were not directly reflected either in the tutors’ tutoring strategies or moderating stages or in the tutees’ English performance, motivation beliefs (measured on eight subscales), or three types of presence. However, the labeling intervention increased the tutees’ motivation belief of self-efficacy. Implications for further research and the limitations of this investigation are discussed.
