A proposed model consists of endogenous variables (teacher attributes and perceived support) and exogenous variables (teachers" performance in iMIS). A survey instrument was administratered to 371 Malay-Muslim teachers at public primary schools in Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani Provinces, Thailand. The structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to validate and test the model fit to the empirical data. The results show that the only three proposed teacher attributes (self-efficacy, values and organizational commitment) and two factors of teachers" perceived support (peer and curriculum support) directly influence to their performance in iMIS. Discussion centers the practical implications of these results.

Islamic resurgence of the 1970s was undeniably an important force that generated new currents of ... more Islamic resurgence of the 1970s was undeniably an important force that generated new currents of political Islam in Malaysia. New Islamist organisations that were critical of the West and existing political status quo emerged on the political landscape calling for the construction of a new social order based on Islamic morality and laws. Although they shared the common belief that the Quran, hadith and Islamic theological treatises could provide the necessary guidelines to build such a society, these organisations differed markedly in their answers to the question of what constituted a contemporary Islamic society and the strategies they adopted for the realisation of that society. The strategies ranged from the construction of Islamic perspectives to comprehend reality and human problems to the formation of loosely structured congregational groups or jemaah to help forge moral solidarity among Muslims in and outside Malaysia. On the Malaysian political scene, these organisations vied with two Malay dominated political parties, the United Malays National Organisation or UMNO and the Islamic Party of Malaysia (Parti Islam Se Malaysia) or PAS which had been championing Islam in the country. The competition was not without consequences for their role, identity and survival as political actors. Some organisations rose to become influential pressure groups while others were forced out of the political arena. One of the new Islamist organisations that met a sad ending was Jemaah Darul Arqam or Al Arqam, in short. Al Arqam emerged in 1968 as a small community of purified Muslims that sought to resurrect the classical Islamic society that existed in seventh century Medina, Saudi Arabia. Over the years, Al Arqam grew in size, membership and popularity and became quite a formidable force in Malaysian politics questioning the political system and arguing for the establishment of an Islamic theocracy. The movement did not get to realise its political agenda because in 1994 that is after twenty six years in existence the Malaysian government decided to ban it on charges that Al Arqam's messianic messages about the coming of a messiah called Imam Mahdi, deviated grossly from established beliefs. Now Al Arqam's experience raises interesting questions about the potentials and limits of Islamist organisations to spread Islam and to realise their political agenda given that in Malaysia, the state reserves the right to determine the parameters of Islamic orthodoxy and to apprehend individuals and groups who promote unorthodox ways of comprehending the divine. Unfortunately past studies on Islamic resurgence offer very

The purpose of this study is to test if selfawareness, balanced processing of information, internalized moral perspective, and relational transparency are predictors of authentic leadership among administrative heads at International Islamic University IIUM. An authentic leader reflects the extent to which there is congruence between leader's actions, intention, moral compasses, self-reflexivity, self-concept, self-development, altruistic actions, authenticity, psychological well-being, and internal regulation. This research is a case study, focusing on data collected from administrative staff at IIUM. The results of the regression indicated that the four predictors (self-awareness, balanced processing of information, internalized moral perspective, and relational transparency) explained authentic leadership. The tested model provides empirical evidence about the pattern of authentic leadership in higher education, thus confirming the presence of authentic leadership in organizations.

To date, past research in Malaysia focused much on the effectiveness and acceptace of e-learning (Ndubisi, 2006); attitude towards e-MBA (Mahmod, Dahlan, Ramayah, Karia, Asaari, Muhammad & Abu Hassan, 2005) as well as factors affecting students' willingness and commitment to use e-learning continuously 2010). However, the system can only be accepted by students when there are effective teaching strategies. Further, learning structure must be well-structured to enable students to persist and maintain their engagement in the e-learning environment. The present study has investigated student learning via the use of e-learning and face to face approaches. The major focus of this study was to examine the students' experiences and their level of satisfaction via quantitative and qualitative methods. Using self constructed questionnaire, the satisfaction of student learning is determined by the lecturer's teaching strategies and lecturer's attitude or awareness towards the whole concept of distant learning itself. The samples of the quantitative study involved 400 students majoring in English Language, Counselling and Islamic Education at one of the faculties in a Public University in Malaysia which was analysed using Multiple regression analyses. The qualitative study focused on interviews related to students' satisfaction based on Michael Moore's Theory of Transactional Distance related to lecturer and learning management system (LMS). Findings from this study indicated satisfaction in learning at the University via blended mode of distant learning approach. However, some of the emerging themes from the interviews have further highlighted the issues and challenges in distant education.

New ethical dilemmas turned to emerge out of compounding facebook communication among users. Ethical behaviour involving computer networking has immense power in promoting not only valuable academic networking, but could be shifted for self-fulfillment and even for evil ends. The issue of moral behavior involving computer networking is defined as cyber ethics. Arief, Dana, and Aniati (2011) Facebook.Questionnaires were distributed to selected universities from Indonesia and Malaysia; 200 undergraduates responded. Correlation, independent t-test and multiple regression analysis were conducted on the data set. The measurement level such as honesty, truthfulness and respect were applied. The study revealed that cyber ethics across boundaries was significantly different. There is a significant relationship between religious awareness and cyber ethics. Facebook communication in the two countries was used by respondents with some religious awareness. This relationship has significant influence on the level of satisfaction while communicating in social networking sites.

In this manuscript, we examined the effect of UL20 mutations on the coordinate transport and Trans Golgi Network (TGN) localization of UL20p and gK, virus-induced cell fusion and infectious virus production. Deletion of 18 amino acids from the UL20p carboxyl terminus (UL20 mutant 204t) inhibited intracellular transport and cell-surface expression of both gK and UL20, resulting in accumulation of UL20p and gK in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in agreement with the inability of 204t to complement UL20-null virus replication and virus-induced cell fusion. In contrast, less severe carboxyl terminal deletions of either 11 or six amino acids (UL20 mutants 211t and 216t, respectively) allowed efficient UL20p and gK intracellular transport, cell-surface expression and TGN colocalization. However, while both 211t and 216t failed to compleme...

The role of teachers has evolved from merely being teachercentered to one that is student centere... more The role of teachers has evolved from merely being teachercentered to one that is student centered and the skills required for a quality teacher are changing too. Assessing teacher's effectiveness will not be a straight forward attempt by solely examining students' achievements or students' perceptions of their teachers' attributes. A careful examination of the teaching concepts, one as a form of "labor and profession" ; or the other as a "craft and art" will indicate that it involves teacher's cognitive ability and interpersonal skills (soft skills) which enhance teacher's performance in the classroom. Furthermore, the National Framework for Professional Standards has outlined that teacher's professional value (quality and professional knowledge and skills) will impact the management of student's learning. Based on these concepts, this study investigated a teacher effectiveness model. The framework of this investigation measured the teacher's cognitive ability (skills of assessment and evaluation, IT skills, and co-curricular knowledge) and the teacher's personality or interpersonal skills (soft skills). The respondents were experienced teachers working in Malaysia. A set of questionnaires with 120 questions were constructed by the researchers and were administered among 2000 school teachers from different types of schools. However, only 1366 completed questionnaires were analyzed while 634 responses were removed due to incomplete data. Utilizing structural equation model (SEM), this study attempted to ascertain the validity of the structural model of which teacher's cognitive abilities and personalities predict teacher's performances. The results revealed a model fit with both cognitive abilities and personality predicting classroom management. Good personality alone, however, is insufficient in terms of enhancing the teachers' commitment and responsibilities towards their students unless it is complemented by the teachers' cognitive competency (cognitive abilities)

Sphingolipids have been recognized as mediators of intracellular calcium release through their actions on a calcium channel, sphingolipid calcium release-mediating protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (SCaMPER). The current study investigates the expression and function of SCaMPER in cardiomyocytes. Northern analyses and RT-PCR cloning and sequencing revealed SCaMPER expression in both human and rat cardiac tissue. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses demonstrated that SCaMPER is abundant in cardiac tissue and is localized to the sarcotubular junction. This was confirmed by the colocalization of SCaMPER with dihydropyridine and ryanodine receptors by confocal microscopy. Purified T tubules were shown to contain SCaMPER and immunoelectron micrographs suggested that SCaMPER is located to the junctional T tubules, but a junctional SR localization...

Their highly mutative nature often results in the emergence of drug resistant strains, which have the potential of causing a pandemic. The virus has two immunologically important glycoproteins, hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and one ion channel protein M2 which are the most important targets for drug discovery, on its surface. In order to identify a peptide-based virus inhibitor against any of these surface proteins, a disulfide constrained heptapeptide phage display library was biopanned against purified AIV sub-type H9N2 virus particles. Results: After four rounds of panning, four different fusion phages were identified. Among the four, the phage displaying the peptide NDFRSKT possessed good anti-viral properties in vitro and in ovo. Further, this peptide inhibited the hemagglutination activity of the viruses but showed very little and no effect on neuraminidase and hemolytic activities respectively. The phage-antibody competition assay proved that the peptide competed with anti-influenza H9N2 antibodies for the binding sites. Based on yeast two-hybrid assay, we observed that the peptide inhibited the viral replication by interacting with the HA protein and this observation was further confirmed by coimmunoprecipitation. Our findings show that we have successfully identified a novel antiviral peptide against avian influenza virus H9N2 which act by binding with the hemagglutination protein of the virus. The broad spectrum activity of the peptide molecule against various subtypes of the avian and human influenza viruses and its comparative efficiency against currently available anti-influenza drugs are yet to be explored.

Despite that, there is no clinically approved antiviral for treatment of dengue virus (DENV) infections. In this study, geraniin extracted from the rind of Nephelium lappaceum was shown to inhibit the replication of DENV-2 in both in vitro and in vivo experiments. Methods: The effect of geraniin on DENV-2 RNA synthesis in infected Vero cells was tested using quantitative RT-PCR. The in vivo efficacy of geraniin in inhibiting DENV-2 infection was then tested using BALB/c mice with geraniin administered at three different times. The differences in spleen to body weight ratio, DENV-2 RNA load and liver damage between the three treatment groups as compared to DENV-2 infected mice without geraniin administration were determined on day eight post-infection. Results: Quantitative RT-PCR confirmed the decrease in viral RNA synthesis of infected Vero cells when treated with geraniin. Geraniin seemed to provide a protective effect on infected BALB/c mice liver when given at 24 h pre-and 24 h post-infection as liver damage was observed to be very mild even though a significant reduction of DENV-2 RNA load in serum was not observed in these two treatment groups. However, when administered at 72 h post-infection, severe liver damage in the form of necrosis and haemorrhage had prevailed despite a substantial reduction of DENV-2 RNA load in serum. Conclusions: Geraniin was found to be effective in reducing DENV-2 RNA load when administered at 72 h postinfection while earlier administration could prevent severe liver damage caused by DENV-2 infection. These results provide evidence that geraniin is a potential candidate for the development of anti-dengue drug.

A more precise diagnostic approach detecting dengue infections in the early phase enables better management of the disease. This helps reduce dengue-associated morbidity and mortality. Besides, an early diagnosis of dengue is also very beneficial in a dengue outbreak and in endemic regions. In this light, this study aimed to determine the potential of the dengue virus (DENV) non-structural 1 (NS1) gene as an early detection biomarker. The cytopathic effects (CPE) were monitored and the cell death of DENV serotype-2 (DENV2)-infected Vero cells was evaluated for fourteen consecutive days. Only Lemos and in-house NS1-specific primer pairs showed positive amplifications in the preliminary primer validation. Thus, both of the primer pairs were then used to amplify the NS1 gene from the infected cells. The NS1 gene was detected as early as day-2 post-infection using the in-hous...

It is thus essential to understand the influenza virus replication patterns in these cell lines prior to utilizing them in vaccine production. The infectivity of avian influenza A virus (A/Chicken/Malaysia/5858/2004) H5N1 in MDCK and Vero cell lines was first assessed by comparing the cytopathic effect (CPE) caused by the virus infection. The viral loads in both of the infected media and cells were also compared. The results showed that both of the MDCK and Vero cells began to exhibit significant CPE (p<0.05) after 48 h post-infection (h p.i). The MDCK cell line was more susceptible to the virus infection compared to Vero cell line throughout the incubation period. A higher viral load was also detected in the host cells compared to their respective culturing media...

To date, mosquito population control remains the key strategy for reducing the continuing spread of DENV. The focus on the development of new vector control strategies through an understanding of the mosquito-virus relationship is essential, especially targeting the midgut, which is the first mosquito organ exposed to DENV infection. Methodology: A cDNA library derived from female adult A. aegypti mosquito midgut cells was established using the switching mechanism at the 5’ end of the RNA transcript (SMART), in combination with a highly potent recombination machinery of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Gal4-based yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assays were performed against DENV-2 proteins (E, prM, M, and NS1). Mammalian two-hybrid (M2H) and double immunofluorescence assays (IFA) were conducted to validate the authenticity of the three selected interactions. Results: The cDNA library was of good quality base...
