The aim of the present study was to compare the outcomes of 2 orbital implants: autogenous grafts and porous polyethylene (Medpor). A longitudinal study was conducted of all patients who had undergone orbital floor reconstruction using an autogenous graft or Medpor. The study participants were divided into 2 groups, and the postoperative outcomes were assessed clinically. Of the 26 patients, 14 (53.0%) had undergone surgery with an autogenous graft and 12 (46.2%) with Medpor. Postoperatively, no diplopia in the primary gaze was noted in any patient. However, down gaze and peripheral diplopia was found in 11.5% and 26.9% in the autogenous group and in 3.8% and 26.9% in the Medpor group, respectively (P = 1.24). Enophthalmos was present in 11.4% of the autogenous graft group and 15.3% of the Medpor group (P = .465). The Hess chart findings were abnormal in 11.4% of both groups (P = .062). Restriction of movement was observed in 1 patient (3.8%) from the autogenous group and 7.7% of the Medpor group (P = .574). Orbital floor reconstruction using an autogenous graft or Medpor showed comparable results.

Results: A 19-year old Malay man, a non contact lens user, presented with history of non traumatic painful reduced vision with redness of right eye for two weeks duration. He noted a cornea opacity one week after the onset of symptoms. Examination showed a paracentral ulcer, with minimal epithelial defect which showed a clearly demarcated stromal infiltration, surrounded by microabscesses at the ulcer edge. Cornea scrapping was sent for culture and sensitivity and isolated Norcadia Nova. Topical gentamicin was commenced empirically and showed rapid clinical response. The patient's condition improved remarkably and the ulcer healed with cornea opacity sparing the visual axis. Conclusion: This case illustrates an infection by Nocardia sp which showed unusual features in a non-traumatic case of cornea ulcer. Appropriate management with gentamicin has showed rapid a...

There was a history of hammering on a metal object prior to that. Ocular examination revealed signs of mild anterior uveitis due to a retained metallic intralenticular foreign body. Conjunctiva was white. Computed Tomography ( CT) scan of the orbit confirmed presence of a single intraocular foreign body. The condition is misleading and can be easily overlooked. A detailed history and clinical examination are mandatory in this misleading situation.

Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral panuveitis with multiple deep seated choroidal lesions in the left eye. Computed tomography scanning of the orbit showed enhancing and bulky optic nerve sheath at the retrobulbar part of both optic nerves. The patient was treated with involved field radiation therapy of the orbit, with cumulative dose of 30Gy. Eight months post radiation therapy, she developed retinal pigment epithelial detachment at the macula and deep chorioretinal degeneration at superotemporal and inferonasal regions of the right fundus. There was evidence of vitreoretinal traction at the margin of chorioretinal degeneration areas, thus barricade lasers were performed in the affected eye. Her visual acuity remains 6,/6 in both eyes. Retinal pigment epithelial detachment is a possi...

Methods: Retrospective case review of 3 patients with a diagnosis of presumed ocular TB at Eye Clinic, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Results: All three patients presented with hazy fundus view in which 2 patients were presented with vitreous hemorrhage (case I & case 3) and one patient was presented with vitritis and vitreous condensation (case 2). Vaso-occlusive changes was noted by post vitrectomy (case l), based on fluorescein fundus angiography (case 2) and after resolving vitreous hemorrhage (case 3). A diagnosis of presumed ocular TB was made based on presence of vaso-occlusive changes (case 1, case 2 & case 3) and supported by positive Mantoux test (case 1 & case 3) and history of contact with pulmonary TB (case 3). Conclusions: Diagnosis of ocular TB requires a high index of suspicion. Early anti TB treatment for suspected ocular TB can give a better...

METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted in 40 patients with DR and another 40 patients without DR. Demographic data was collected and comprehensive ocular examination was performed. Nine mL venous blood was taken for fasting serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, ox-LDL, and for HbA1c. RESULTS: The mean serum cholesterol level was 5.9 ± 1.86mmol,/L in DR group compared to patients without retinopathy 5.0 ± 1.03mmol,/L ( P = 0.001 ). The mean serum LDL was 3.6 ± 1.69mmol,/L in retinopathy group compared to 3.0 ± 1 .02mmol./L in the contol group ( P=0.005). There was a higher concentration of serum cholesterol , triglyceride and LDL in patients with severe retinal hard exudates compared to those with mild and moderate, however it was not statistically significant ( P=0. 08...

Cross-sectional study. A total of 200 voluntary participants (106 women and 94 men) among Malay students aged 20 to 37 years at Health Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The relationship between Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph parameters with age, gender and refractive error were analysed with correlation tests and multiple linear regression analyses. Twelve parameters, that is, disc area, rim area, cup area, cup to disc area, cup volume, rim volume, height variation contour, cup shape measure, mean cup depth, maximum cup depth, mean retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and retinal nerve fibre layer cross-sectional area. Disc area, rim area and cup : disc area ratio averaged 2.24 ± 0.52 (mean ± standard deviation), 1.64 ± 0.32 and 0.25 ± 0.12 mm(2) , respectively. Five parameters (disc area, cup area, cup volume, cup : disc area ratio and mean retinal nerve fibre layer thickness) showed statistically significant difference between men and women. Age was negatively and significantly correlated with rim area with coefficient r = -0.21, P = 0.003. All optic disc parameters were significantly correlated (P < 0.05) with disc area, except cup shape measure. One or more of optic disc parameters were affected significantly by age, gender and disc area in healthy adult Malays' eyes. These factors need to be considered during the evaluation of optic disc.

This study is intended to compare the prediction error and the accuracy of predictability of intraocular lens power calculation in pediatric patients at 3 month post cataract surgery with primary implantation of an intraocular lens using SRK II versus Pediatric IOL Calculator for pediatric intraocular lens calculation. Pediatric IOL Calculator is a modification of SRK II using Holladay algorithm. This program attempts to predict the refraction of a pseudophakic child as he grows, using a Holladay algorithm model. This model is based on refraction measurements of pediatric aphakic eyes. Pediatric IOL Calculator uses computer software for intraocular lens calculation.

Cells were isolated from corneoscleral rings and cultured in a mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-selective media and examined for differentiation, phenotyping and characterization. LMSCs were capable of trilineage differentiation, adhered to tissue culture plastic, expressed HLA class I and cell surface antigens associated with human MSC while having no/low expression of HLA class II and negative hematopoietic lineage markers. They were capable for CXCL12-mediated cellular migration. LMSCs adhered, proliferated on amniotic membrane and expressed the common putative limbal stem cell markers. Limbal-derived MSC exhibited plasticity, could maintain limbal markers expression and demonstrated viable growth on amniotic membrane.

It is classified based on the aetiological agent into bacterial, viral, fungal and acanthamoeba keratitis. Predisposing factors for development of cornea ulcer are contact lens wear, trauma, bullous keratopathy, exposure, diminished cornea sensation and tear film deficiency. Certain organism are closely related to certain predisposing factors. Contact lens related cornea ulcer commonly cause by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and trauma related cornea ulcer commonly cause by fungi';. Nocardia is an aerobic, acid-fast-positive, branched gram-positive rod classified under actinomyces group. It .produces aerial hyphae. Nocardia species have been implicated as agents of infectious diseases in both immunocompetent and imrhunocompromised patients.
