We investigated the function of the conus arteriosus in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana using a com... more We investigated the function of the conus arteriosus in the bullfrog Rana catesbeiana using a combination of anatomical and physiological techniques. Although there is a normal delay in ventriculoconal conduction and we could induce a spectrum of ventriculoconal conduction disturbances by manipulating the region of the ventriculoconal junction, we found no histological evidence of specialized conducting myocardial tissue in this region. The performance of the conus arteriosus was explored during various disturbances of ventriculoconal conduction and also during hemodynamic disturbances produced by hemorrhage and afterloading. The conus was found to contribute little to forward flow under ordinary circumstances, but its contribution increased greatly during bleeding or partial occlusion of the truncus. In contrast to the conclusion of others, no evidence could be adduced to support the idea that the conus serves as a depulsating chamber. Disparities in previous reports concerning the operation of the conus as a booster pump are attributed to special experimental circumstances.

F... more This is a serial section examination of conduction system in six hearts with tricuspid atresia. Four had regular (d-) complete transposition and two did not have transposition. The conduction system was more or less the same in all the hearts. The atrioventricular (A-V) node was in the normal position posteriorly and was short. The A-V bundle was situated in the left ventricular aspect of the subendocardium and passed posteriorly to the ventricular septal defect. Even though this type of conduction system is abnormal in some respects, it is not the type one finds in single ventricle with small outlet chamber with regular (d-) transposition. In those hearts an anteriorly located A-V node is present. These findings further substantiate the concept that tricuspid atresia with or without transposition is not a form of single (primitive) ventricle.

This is a study of the course of the conduction system in two cases of hypoplasia of the aortic t... more This is a study of the course of the conduction system in two cases of hypoplasia of the aortic tract complex, one with mitral stenosis and the other with mitral atresia. In both there was a posterior atrioventricular (AV) node which formed the AV bundle. In case 1 the bundle was short and bifurcated early. The branching bundle gave off a large left bundle branch (LBB), many Mahaim fibers to the septum and a small right bundle branch (RBB). In case 2 the AV node was divided into two parts which formed two posterior bundles which joined together to form a short branching bundle. Instead of a LBB there were profuse Mahaim fibers passing from the branching bundle to the depths of the ventricular septum. The RBB was large. The abnormalities seen in the conduction system particularly in the LBB are discussed from the embryologic stand-point.

This paper deals with the anatomic differences between single ventricle and small outlet chamber,... more This paper deals with the anatomic differences between single ventricle and small outlet chamber, straddling tricuspid orifice and valve, and displaced tricuspid orifice and valve. In single ventricle, both atrioventricular orifices enter a chamber which contains the sinuses of both definitive ventricles, while a small outlet chamber represents the definitive infundibulum of the right ventricle. In straddling tricuspid orifice and valve, the primitive left ventricle contains the sinus of the definitive infundibulum of the right ventricle. In straddling tricuspid orifice and valve, the primitive left ventricle contains the sinus of the definitive left ventricle and also a portion of the sinus of the definitive right ventricle. The primitive right ventricle contains the infundibulum and part of the sinus of the definitive right ventricle. In displaced tricuspid orifice, the primitive left ventricle contains the sinus of the definitive left and almost all of the sinus of the definitive right ventricle. However, a posterior ventricular septum is formed, so that a portion of sinus or apical recess of the definitive right ventricle is included in the primitive right ventricle together with its infundibulum. Possible embryologic speculations are offered to account for these entities. The differences in the anatomy of these entities may be important to the surgeon.

Anatomic Nomenclature of the AV Junctions. Current nomenclature for the AV junctions derives from... more Anatomic Nomenclature of the AV Junctions. Current nomenclature for the AV junctions derives from a surgically distorted view, placing; the valvar rings and the triangle of Koch in a single plane with anteroposterior and right-left lateral coordinates. Within this convention, the aorta is considered to occupy an anterior position, whereas the mouth of the coronary sinus is shown as heing posterior. Although this nomenclature has served its purpose for the description and treatment of arrhythmias dependent on accessory pathways and AV nodal reentry, it is less than satisfactory for the description of atrial and ventricular mapping. To correct these deficiencies, a consensus document has heen prepared by experts from the Working Group of Arrhythmias of the European Society of Cardiology and from the Nctrth American Society of Pacing and Klectrophysiology. It proposes a new, anatomically .sound, nomenclature that will be applicahle to all chambers of the heart. In this report, we discuss its value for description of the A V junctions and establish the principles of this new nomenclature.
