One of the standard methods of measuring TM for animal and vegetable fats is the slip point, also known as the open capillary method. This method is imprecise and not amenable to automation or mass testing. We have developed a technique for measuring TM of animal fat using the Rotor-Gene Q (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany). The assay has an intra-assay SD of 0.08°C. A single operator can extract and assay up to 250 samples of animal fat in 24 h, including the time to extract the fat from the adipose tissue. This technique will improve the quality of research into genetic and environmental contributions to fat composition of meat.

We developed haplospecific markers spanning 14Mb-16Mb on Bota Chromosome 19 known to influence fat metabolism and muscle growth. Haplotypes, assigned by segregation over 3-generation pedigrees, can be identified in different cattle breeds and are therefore species ancestral haplotypes, while other ancestral haplotypes are breed-specific. Previous work on the human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) established the relevant unit of inheritance is not the allele but the ancestral haplotype inherited faithfully from remote ancestors. Comparing haplotype frequencies between Simmental, Angus and Wagyu reveals breed-specific ancestral haplotypes distinguishing most Wagyu from Angus. ABSTRACT Frequency of laughter and behavioral and verbal attempts to initiate humor were observed... more ABSTRACT Frequency of laughter and behavioral and verbal attempts to initiate humor were observed in 60 38–75 mo old children during spontaneous free play sessions. Additional behavior categories (e.g., physical and verbal aggression, attention-seeking, imitation) were chosen for observation on the basis of previous evidence regarding behavioral antecedents of humor development. Stepwise multiple regression of the latter behaviors upon sense of humor scores indicated that the amount of time spent in social play accounted for the greatest amount of variance in the Ss' laughter and humor initiation. Limited support was obtained for the view that humor provides a means of rechanneling aggressive behavior tendencies into more socially acceptable forms of behavior. Twenty-five women who had used aggression during conflicts with their romantic partners were interviewed. Results indicated that, while the women reported initiating aggression in the majority of conflicts described (54%), they varied in how they defined initiation, with some believing that initiating aggression meant being angry, bringing up the conflict issue, or persistently asking the partner to engage verbally. Twelve categories of motives for the use of aggression were also identified. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, highlighting the ongoing need for an ecological perspective when studying women's use of aggression.
In a series of five studies a method of assessing relationship thinking and its role in close rel... more In a series of five studies a method of assessing relationship thinking and its role in close relationship dynamics was developed. These studies were carricd out with college students who responded to questionnaires. Studies 1 and 2 focused on identifying items representing the content and frequency of relationship thinking about participants' present dating relationships. Studies 3 and 4 examined personal characteristics, general relationship schema, and subjective conditions that were related to relationship thinking. Study 5 identified the ability of relationship thinking to predict individuals' perceptions of an interaction with their partners. Results uncovered three types of relationship thinking: partner, positive affect, and network. Relationship thinking was related in expected ways to several personal characteristics, subjective conditions, and general relationship schema. Relationship thinking was predictive of perceptions of distress-maintaining and relationship-enhancing interactions with the dating partners. The findings suggest increased attention to the social cognitive aspects of close relationships.
The degree to which equity and rewards predict satisfaction was investigated in 325 college stude... more The degree to which equity and rewards predict satisfaction was investigated in 325 college students (88 males, 237 females) divided into casual or intimate relationship groups according to their current dating status. Ss completed a questionnaire which included the Walster, Walster, and Traupmann measure of equity, the Austin Mood Index, and an assessment of reward level in the six reward areas outlined by Foa and Foa. Stepwise regression indicated that status and equity were significant predictors of satisfaction for the casually involved group (Multiple R = .58), while information, equity and love were significant predictors of satisfaction for the intimate group (Multiple R = .60). Discussion centered on individual status benefits derived from casual dating as compared with relationship-oriented rewards for intimate daters.

A risk and resilience model of criminal violence against women was investigated using secondary data. The sample was composed of adolescent male juvenile delinquents who had been physically abused by their parents, and who were followed up at ages 25 and 31. A series of structural equation models were fit to investigate whether dysregulated affect mediated the effects of attachment and family chaos on the adult perpetration of violence against women. These models support the hypothesis that affect dysregulation may act as a mediator. Results raise new ideas about the mechanisms by which violence may be transmitted across generations.
