Tsegyu Santas PhD, is a Senior lecturer and Acting Head, Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi. He has taught previously at Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia and Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai Niger State. By utilizing the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Risk Perception Theory (RPT), in-depth interviews and observation methods were used to determine rural folks’ perception of COVID-19 media messages and their influence on the attitude of the rural people towards the virus. A thematic analysis of respondents’ views revealed that most of the participants were exposed to public media enlightenment messages on COVID-19. The dominant channels of communication utilized by the rural people to receive media messages on COVID-19 were radio and television, mobile phones (text messages), Facebook, and interpersonal communication through family members. The study is an investigation of the influence of social media marketing on sales performance of ... more The study is an investigation of the influence of social media marketing on sales performance of select small and medium enterprises in Niger State, Nigeria. The major objective of the study was to examine whether or not SMEs do advertise their products/ services through social media platforms and to determine the effect of social media marketing on the sales performance of the SMEs. Survey research method was used, while questionnaire was adopted as the instrument for data collection. Data elicited from the field were analysed, using descriptive statistics (frequency table, cross tabulation and Gamma test). The findings showed that social media marketing has no significant effect on the sales performance of SMEs in Minna metropolis. Based on the findings, the study recommended that promoters of SMEs like Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the various states' agencies should assist in educating SME owners on the benefits of advertising through the various social media platforms.

This study is a critical analysis of press coverage of the 2015 presidential election by three na... more This study is a critical analysis of press coverage of the 2015 presidential election by three national dailies-Daily Trust, The Nation and Guardian newspapers. Using content analysis as methodology for the study, the researchers examined the prominence, forms of coverage, themes of political advertisement and sensational stories reported by the three newspapers during the election period. Findings of the study showed that the newspapers gave substantial coverage to the elections with most of the stories reported in the inside page, front page and back page of the national dailies. Results of the study further revealed that in terms of news formats, most of the stories were reported as straight news, features and opinion articles, while the basic issues that political candidates focused on their advertised pages were issues that bordered on education, employment, security, health, agriculture and infrastructural development among several others. Findings also showed that all the newspapers sectionalised their stories along ethnic, political and religious lines. The researchers concluded that the three newspapers were not objective in their reportage of the events. It was, therefore, recommended a more professional handling of news stories so as to provide balance and fairness in the coverage of future elections in Nigeria.

The rationale behind the study was to find out whether the broadcast media provided equal level playing ground to all political contestants during the election. This was embarked upon against the claim that media ownership influence tends to exert pressure on the mass media during political campaigns. The study employed survey research design and the questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The agenda setting theory and the social responsibility theory of the press provided the theoretical framework of analysis for the study. The study aimed at examining whether or not Nigeria's foreign policy under former President onath... more The study aimed at examining whether or not Nigeria's foreign policy under former President onathan contributed in improving the image of Nigeria globally. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. A sample size of 399 was derived out of the 348,990 study population using the Taro Yamane. The data collected were presented in tables using frequency table as well as Pearson Product moment correlation coefficient, to test hypothesis. The study reveals that Nigeria's foreign policy over the years has been greatly sabotaged by inconsistencies and ambiguities. The findings also shows that more than external challenges, it is the internal challenges that are dampening Nigeria's attainment of positive international image and national transformation. Some of those challenges include leadership crisis, corruption, insurgency and terrorism amongst others. It was therefore recommended that major reorganization of the Foreign Service such that positions of the Ambassadors and other key positions will no longer be politicized and the government should integrate professional international public relations practitioners in its interaction with the international community in order to effectively boost the global image of the nation.

Government institutions are championing the course based on what they termed &quot;abuse of the platforms&quot;. According to authorities, social media has the propensity to ignite an already polarised country like Nigeria if not quickly checked. However, the traditional media is regulated and many believe the call to regulate social media is a ploy to muzzle free speech. Regulatory frameworks are not new to the media in Nigeria-National Broadcasting Commission, and the Nigerian Press Council regulates broadcast and print media in the country. In a democratic society, over-regulation is seen as a threat to free speech. Therefore, the call to regulate social media has received backlash from Nigerians across political divides. Anchored on regulation theory, this paper discusses the implications and challenges of regulating social media in a democratic society like Nigeria. The major challenge is that of infringement on citizens&#39; right to free speech. The study utilised library research to arrive at secondary data sources useful for understanding the challenges and implications of embarking on a social media regulation in Nigeria. The paper concludes that it is indeed difficult to regulate social media as it will likely constitute an attack on freedom of expressiona fundamental right of human beings which democratic regimes the world over seeks to uphold.

People easily get addicted to staying glued to their digital devicesmobile phones, laptop computers, tablet computers and many more which are all gateways to the Internet in general and social media in particular. This addiction comes with a price as it puts many users face-to-face with all forms of personalities, information and situations. COVID-19 took the world by surprise when its outbreak was reported in December 2019 following a report of a mysterious illness in Wuhan, China. Infodemiology is not new and scholars have made attempts to understand the pattern of information flow on platforms such as the Internet and social media. However, the word infodemic recently got into the mix. It was used to describe the spread of falsehood on COVID-19 and social media is recognised as the main diffusing point. This study is a discourse on the influence social media conspiracies and fake news has on the fight against Coronavirus. Through existing literature, that is library research, the study sought to identify conspiracy theories that trended during the Covid-19 pandemic whilst also exploring the implications of such conspiracies on the fight against the pandemic vis á vis its impact on Nigeria's public health. It is anchored on Uses and Gratifications and Conspiracy Theories. The paper, among other findings revealed that Coronavirus-related conspiracies trended in the middle of the outbreak and asserted that social media owing to its ubiquitous nature weighs so much power, and therefore had a mix of negative and positive impacts on the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria. It concludes that unverified reports were shared on social media to the detriment of Nigeria's public health.

The study was carried out to determine the influence of fake news on Facebook on voter's choice o... more The study was carried out to determine the influence of fake news on Facebook on voter's choice of candidates during the 2019 gubernatorial electioneering in Lafia metropolis Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The survey research design was employed with the use of questionnaire as instrument of data collection. The population of the study consists of 385 respondents drawn from eligible voters in Lafia metropolis. The simple percentage statistical method was used to analyse the data of the study. The propaganda model provided the theoretical base for the study. The findings showed that voters in Nasarawa State were well expose to Fake news campaign on Facebook. It was also discovered that their exposure to Fake news on Facebook did not influenced their voting decision in the election. Several factors were identified by the respondents as reasons that led to the spread of fake news during the election. Chief among them was the quest to discredit the competence and personality of political aspirants during the elections. Based on this finding, it was recommended that stiff sanctions should be given by the INEC and National Broadcasting Commission to candidates and their supporters who spread fake news and false information about rival political opponents. The study also recommends that social media companies should ensure that they block false information shared on their platforms.

COVID-19 came with all forms of conspiracy theories and fake news across various social media platforms, breeding some form of danger on public health. Such requires effective health communication. Health belief model is the theoretical framework for this paper. Through the use of summative evaluation design by consulting existing research documents in book chapters, journal article and online materials, the paper established that health communication possesses the required powers to quench all forms of infodemic and conspiracies regarding coronavirus. The paper emphasizes that in the face of infodemic and conspiracy theories regarding COVID-19, effective health communication becomes important and can be relied upon to help in quality communication to vulnerable groups on the risk and dangers associated with misinformation. The paper suggests that best ways government and other stakeholders can sustain efforts at stemming the tide with regards to misinformation in public domain without infringing on personal liberties of citizens is to improve efforts aimed at countering fake news across same platforms where fake news thrives.

In the face of so much misinformation or fake news in public domain, threatening public health, it has become even more important and needed. Whereas health communication is important in the fight against diseases especially those that have assumed the pandemic status, effective health communication is needed mostly, if the desired result and set objectives must be realized in record time. One important role communication plays in fighting diseases is that it helps eliminate misinformation as well as disinformation. The rationale behind the study was to find out whether the broadcast media provided equal level playing ground to all political contestants during the election. This was embarked upon against the claim that media ownership influence tends to exert pressure on the mass media during political campaigns. The study employed survey research design and the questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. A sample size of 399 was derived out of the 348,990 study population using the Taro Yamane. The data collected were presented in tables using frequency table as well as Pearson Product moment correlation coefficient, to test hypothesis. The study reveals that Nigeria's foreign policy over the years has been greatly sabotaged by inconsistencies and ambiguities. The findings also shows that more than external challenges, it is the internal challenges that are dampening Nigeria's attainment of positive international image and national transformation. Some of those challenges include leadership crisis, corruption, insurgency and terrorism amongst others. It was therefore recommended that major reorganization of the Foreign Service such that positions of the Ambassadors and other key positions will no longer be politicized and the government should integrate professional international public relations practitioners in its interaction with the international community in order to effectively boost the global image of the nation.

Government institutions are championing the course based on what they termed &quot;abuse of the platforms&quot;. According to authorities, social media has the propensity to ignite an already polarised country like Nigeria if not quickly checked. However, the traditional media is regulated and many believe the call to regulate social media is a ploy to muzzle free speech. Regulatory frameworks are not new to the media in Nigeria-National Broadcasting Commission, and the Nigerian Press Council regulates broadcast and print media in the country. In a democratic society, over-regulation is seen as a threat to free speech. Therefore, the call to regulate social media has received backlash from Nigerians across political divides. Anchored on regulation theory, this paper discusses the implications and challenges of regulating social media in a democratic society like Nigeria. The major challenge is that of infringement on citizens&#39; right to free speech. The study utilised library research to arrive at secondary data sources useful for understanding the challenges and implications of embarking on a social media regulation in Nigeria. The paper concludes that it is indeed difficult to regulate social media as it will likely constitute an attack on freedom of expressiona fundamental right of human beings which democratic regimes the world over seeks to uphold.

People easily get addicted to staying glued to their digital devicesmobile phones, laptop computers, tablet computers and many more which are all gateways to the Internet in general and social media in particular. This addiction comes with a price as it puts many users face-to-face with all forms of personalities, information and situations. COVID-19 took the world by surprise when its outbreak was reported in December 2019 following a report of a mysterious illness in Wuhan, China. Infodemiology is not new and scholars have made attempts to understand the pattern of information flow on platforms such as the Internet and social media. However, the word infodemic recently got into the mix. It was used to describe the spread of falsehood on COVID-19 and social media is recognised as the main diffusing point. This study is a discourse on the influence social media conspiracies and fake news has on the fight against Coronavirus. Through existing literature, that is library research, the study sought to identify conspiracy theories that trended during the Covid-19 pandemic whilst also exploring the implications of such conspiracies on the fight against the pandemic vis á vis its impact on Nigeria's public health. It is anchored on Uses and Gratifications and Conspiracy Theories. The paper, among other findings revealed that Coronavirus-related conspiracies trended in the middle of the outbreak and asserted that social media owing to its ubiquitous nature weighs so much power, and therefore had a mix of negative and positive impacts on the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria. It concludes that unverified reports were shared on social media to the detriment of Nigeria's public health.

The study was carried out to determine the influence of fake news on Facebook on voter's choice o... more The study was carried out to determine the influence of fake news on Facebook on voter's choice of candidates during the 2019 gubernatorial electioneering in Lafia metropolis Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The survey research design was employed with the use of questionnaire as instrument of data collection. The population of the study consists of 385 respondents drawn from eligible voters in Lafia metropolis. The simple percentage statistical method was used to analyse the data of the study. The propaganda model provided the theoretical base for the study. The findings showed that voters in Nasarawa State were well expose to Fake news campaign on Facebook. It was also discovered that their exposure to Fake news on Facebook did not influenced their voting decision in the election. Several factors were identified by the respondents as reasons that led to the spread of fake news during the election. Chief among them was the quest to discredit the competence and personality of political aspirants during the elections. Based on this finding, it was recommended that stiff sanctions should be given by the INEC and National Broadcasting Commission to candidates and their supporters who spread fake news and false information about rival political opponents. The study also recommends that social media companies should ensure that they block false information shared on their platforms.
