This work attempts to examine the systemic patterns (intentionality system) deployed in expressin... more This work attempts to examine the systemic patterns (intentionality system) deployed in expressing textual intentionality as. A critical theoretical linguistic approach is adopted in this study. In the course of the study, Instantiation, mode and acceptability are identified as linguistically verifiable systemic choices deployed in linguistically expressed intention in choice texts produced by native speakers of English in a variety of text typology. Each of these systemic choices subsumes other systems of varied choices, each working independently though, yet interdependently with other systems in expressing intention linguistically. Instantiation system – the choice of creating a text in order to express intention as opposed to using symbols or paralanguage – is the first identified linguistically verifiable choice in expressing textual intentionality. Its choice reveals the preference for text by a text producer that an intention in about to be expressed linguistically and the text producer preference for text. The next identified intentionality system explicitness explains the degree of semantic clarity of expressed intention as conveyed in the text through deliberate deployment of choice linguistic item(s). The third, acceptability concerns the text’s usefulness and relevance (engendered by cohesion and coherence) to the receiver.
