Its structure (space group P21/c, Z=2) is determined by X-ray analysis. Each Th atom is nonacoordinated. Each ligand, which is trianionic pentadentate, is coordinated to the first Th atom through O(1) and N(1) and to the other through N(2) and O(3); the O(2) atom bridges both the Th atoms (no yield given).

The patterns of concentration of the Cs-137 derived from the Chernobyl accident were analysed in ... more The patterns of concentration of the Cs-137 derived from the Chernobyl accident were analysed in a series of vertical profiles of Sphagnum collected at two peatlands in the southern Mps. The peak concentrations of the Chernobyl radiocesium were found in segments of Sphagnum located at different distances from the growing apex, probably corresponding to the plant tissues produced in the 1986 vegetation season. This indicated that the growth rates of Sphagnum are subject to considerable variations not only between species, but also between years and even between individuals of the same species when growing in different microhabitats at the same site. However, the concentrations of the Chernobyl-derived radiocesium are high also in the Sphagnum segments produced after 1986. This was due to a continuous translocation of Cs-137 towards the capitulum, probably determined by the chemical similarity between cesium and potassium. Although the two sites investigated received nearly the same amounts of rainfall in the two-week period following the arrival of the Chernobyl plume, the average concentrations of radiocesium in all Sphagnum species were significantly higher at one of them, presumably because the fallout deposition was conditioned by a number of meteorological factors besides precipitation.

The ever-increasing urbanization and industrialization, combined with a poor sewage system, an increase in both marine and inland traffic, as well as insufficient water circulation in the Bay itself have resulted in some level of pollution. Since heavy metals are extremely toxic and do not easily undergo biodecomposition, the results of this study supply valuable information concerning the metal pollution of the marine environment in Boka Kotorska Bay. The concentrations of the investigated metals and nonmetals accumulated in the mussels were determined during the fall of 2007 using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) for Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sn and V, and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) to determine the concentrations of Fe, Zn, Si, P, S, Cl, K and Ca. ED-XRF was also used to determi...

The area density (AD) values of black silver deposits (BSDs) were therefore seasonally quantified by image analysis in digestive cell lysosomes. Sediments were characterised in terms of grain size, organic content and metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn). The physiological status of the bivalves was also evaluated by applying the "survival in air" test as a generic stress index. Chemical results showed that Zn contributed to the total metal load for more than 60% in sediments and for 85%-94% in mussel and clam digestive glands, respectively (data processed from published results obtained on the same samples). Regression analyses between extent of BSDs and both total metal and Zn concentrations in digestive gland followed a linear pattern in mussels and clams, but not in arks. Similarly, in mussels and clams only, BSD amount was significa...

The concentrations of macro, micro, nonessential and even the small amounts of potentially toxic elements in the cultivated and wild mussels were influenced by industry, tourism and the geohydrology of the Bay. In the case of cultivated mussels, the limiting factor, i.e., the element the elevated concentration of which restricts mussels consumption, was Zr, while in the case of wild mussels the limiting factors were Cr and As. The sites with cultivated mussels stand out as sites with the highest calculated element pollution index, the total hazard index and with higher estimated risk to the health of consumers.

The crystal structure has been determined by X-ray analysis from three-dimensional counter data, and refined by least-squares to R 0·076 for 1369 reflections. Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/a, with a= 12·176(3), b= 8·364(3), c= 7·847(3)A, β= 90·42°(5), and Z= 2. The linear uranyl groups perpendicular to the equatorial plane in which four oxygen atoms of two nitrate groups and two amidic oxygen atoms of the organic ligands occupy the corners of an irregular hexagon. The crystallographic results are related to i.r. and n.m.r. measurements.

It normally requires corrections for self-absorption of gamma rays, as environmental samples often differ in composition from each other and from the calibration standards. The procedure proposed, based on the use of a special shaped source for the absorption measurement, is more accurate than the conventional point source and, at the same time, as simple and quick.
