In Thailand, translation subjects are included as core courses and/or elective courses in some cu... more In Thailand, translation subjects are included as core courses and/or elective courses in some curricula such as the Bachelor of Arts in English. Evidence shows, however, that common translation errors continue to affect the quality of translation outputs among Thai students (e.g. research has a twofold objective. On the one hand, informed by the framework of Wongranu (2017), the current research investigates the common translation errors of English major students. On the other hand, applying Suksaeresup and Thep-Ackrapong's (2009) framework on explanatory account for errors, this research enterprise provides insights on how to avoid common errors in translation. A total of 30 students' translations were randomly selected from the three sections of the Thai to English translation classes at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University. These translations are independently examined by four translation experts for errors. Based on the findings, the analysts suggest ways to avoid these errors. All analyses are checked for inter-rater agreement using Fleiss' kappa (Shrout & Fleiss, 1979), and inter-rater agreement is interpreted as proposed by Landis and Koch (1977). The results of the study can be used as a basic guideline for identifying and avoiding translation errors especially for novice translators (e.g. Kulthamrong, 2014) and for improving teaching translation in English as a Foreign/Global Language context (Wongranu, 2017).

This study is to investigate the effects of using linguistic landscape (LL) on students' translat... more This study is to investigate the effects of using linguistic landscape (LL) on students' translation ability. LL in business areas of Bangkok were collected through Camera Safari Method and analyzed, then designed as translation teaching materials for students who enrolled in Translation Course at Huachiew Chalermprakiet University in 2021. Applying the framework of Algryani & Syahrin (2021), a pre-test was administered before the implementation of LL materials. A post-test was then conducted to observe the translation score improvement together with the qualitative findings from students' interviews. The research statistics included mean, SD, and T-test. The findings revealed that in the pre-test, the average score was 31.88 while that of the post-test increased to 38.02 showing statistically significant difference at 0.00. The findings from the interviews revealed that using LL as teaching materials and designing suitable learning activities can be used as a potential methodology to develop students' translation ability, language awareness, critical thinking skills, and learning motivation. In addition, this study has shown a new insight into the advantages of using LL to enhance the students' learning in EFL situations.

Translation subjects have been included as core courses and/or elective courses for the students,... more Translation subjects have been included as core courses and/or elective courses for the students, especially for those who are majoring in language studies since the capacity to do translation jobs gives the learners some employability advantage compared to those who do not have the skill (Carreon et al., 2018). While translation is generally found and widely taught among language studies curricula in Thailand, common translation errors continue to affect the quality of the translation among Thai students, which is assumed in this paper as maybe secondary to the inability of students to avoid error in translation. Thus, employing the framework of Wongranu (2017) combined with Nida's (1964) translation model and Cummings' (2011) decoding concept, this paper aims to explore the effect of reading-aloud (RA) as an error avoidance tool in translation in a group of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) translation learners by comparing the translation results between silent-translation and reading-aloud translation. As data, this study collects the translation outputs of 18 higher education students in the subject Thai-English Translation. The results of the study showed some insights on the usefulness of reading-aloud in translation as an error avoidant technique as well as to improve teaching translation in EFL classroom.

English language learning does not only occur in the classroom, but it also takes place within le... more English language learning does not only occur in the classroom, but it also takes place within learners' communities. Learning English can be enhanced through various resources like available linguistics landscapes (LLs) such as billboard and public signs. In some translation courses, textbooks used in the courses are outdated, especially in advertising translation. Therefore, using LLs could be one way for EFL students to access authentic texts. However, language in LLs must be analyzed before using them as a class material. This study investigates what linguistic features (language functions, language structures, formality scales, and figurative language) in LLs, which were taken from multilingual and business sites of Bangkok. By adapting the frameworks of Hancock (2012) and Thongtong (2016), the results revealed that the highest percentage of language functions use in LLs is the informing function (81%). " Phrase" is used more frequently in language structure at 83% while only 8% in imagery of figurative language. Moreover, the informal scale of language in LLs is used the most (66%) and monolingual (English) is the most commonly used in language displays (95%). This study reveals new insights into how linguistic features of LLs can be used as authentic materials for English language teaching.
