Resumo: Peniche e o arquipélago da Berlenga, onde se incluem os Farilhões e as Estelas, constitue... more Resumo: Peniche e o arquipélago da Berlenga, onde se incluem os Farilhões e as Estelas, constituem um caso singular no que respeita quer à quantidade de naufrágios ocorridos nas suas águas, quer à sua diversidade e diacronia. Para este facto, contribuem dois importantes fatores -as excecionais condições que a ilha da Berlenga oferece como fundeadouro de abrigo e o notável obstáculo à navegação constituído pelo istmo de Peniche e o conjunto daquelas ilhas. Face à existência deste importante património cultural subaquático, preconiza a legislação nacional e internacional em vigor a necessidade de o inventariar, estudar, preservar e divulgar. Neste contexto, pretende-se valorizar alguns destes naufrágios através da sua constituição em Reservas Arqueológicas Subaquáticas (RAS), Abstract: Peniche and the Berlenga archipelago, including Farilhões and Estelas islets, are a case study concerning the amount of ships lost there and their diversity and chronology. This wealth of underwater cultural heritage -natural in an area that, in spite of being a splendid anchorage, is also a formidable obstacle to navigation, with its currents and common fog conditions -needs to be inventoried, researched, studied and made accessible to the general public, in accordance with the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, ratified by Portugal in September 2006. As such, and as a cultural management tool, we intend to turn some of this area wrecks into of Underwater Archaeological Preserves.
