The recent article by Christie et al. provides a strong statement inviting us to review the philo... more The recent article by Christie et al. provides a strong statement inviting us to review the philosophy and organization of the ethics approval process and acknowledge the negative public health consequences of multiple ethics review for multicentre trials. 1 The ethical review process sparks off, in many cases, a smouldering feeling of discontent and desire for change. And, there is little doubt that those who wish to criticize the system find plentiful grounds on which to do so. But the picture the authors present of current practice in Australia, although not entirely false, is not complete. The moment is one of fluidity. Human Research Ethics Committees (HREC) and institutional administrators are not indifferent to the difficulties and challenges for researchers and sponsors posed by a decentralized system of multiple ethics evaluation. In July 2007, NSW Health initiated a new model under which every human research project, including research conducted at more than one site, is ethically reviewed once only. 2 Under the new system, NSW Health accredits

This situation of increasing complexity and changing professional roles gives rise to multifaceted ethical dilemmas and theoretical and practical concerns. In this essay we argue that for multidisciplinary relationships to be facilitated and to progress towards interdisciplinary teamwork, moral agents have to go beyond orthodox ethical systems and appeal to normative theory. We will argue that conceptualising ethics as a shared social practice may provide a useful starting point. This dialogic approach places greater emphasis on open deliberation and the articulation, negotiation, exploration and generation of new ethical perspectives in the here and now of clinical practice.

When tumour samples are collected from patients in the course of diagnosis or therapy, patients are asked whether they would like to donate their tissue sample to research. Consent to this donation means that their tissue sample will be placed in a tissue or tumour bank. There are many kinds of tissue banks organised according to a number of demographic factors such as age, geographic location, cultural groups or disease groups. For many years, the secondary use of diagnostic and therapeutic tissues in research did not cause much ethical concern. There was little specific regulation, and consent for tumour banking research -if obtained at all -was obtained in a 'blanket' fashion, asking patients to authorise the use of their tissues for any kind of research. This approach was widely supported by researchers and was not illegal . The ethical requirement that consent to research be 'specific' was interpreted broadly and waiver criteria for consent, such as 'inconvenience' and 'public interest', were applied liberally . Recently, however, controversy has arisen about the practices of collecting, storing and using human tissue for research purposes. This controversy is due, in part, to a series of media exposures of 'scandalous', non-consensual retention of organs from post-mortem examinations in several coun-
