Methodology: It is an experimental study with the students of Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta in 2017/2018 academic year as the population with a total of 35 students of IVB semester as the respondents. The data collection techniques included tests and documentation. Results: The results of the Mann-Whitney Test showed a p-value of 0.012 <α = 5%, hence H 0 was rejected, which implied that the scores of the post-test of the two classes were different at the 5% level of significance. It indicates a significant difference in reasoning skills. Applications/Originality/Value: Based on the average values of the two classes, an increase in the reasoning of students in the experimental class is higher than those in control. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of models and tools of concept maps in the Introduction to Real Analysis has been effective in improving student reasoning.

Exploring Students' Problem-solving Ability and Response towards Metacognitive Strategy in Mathematics Learning

This study aims to investigate students' problem-solving abilities and responses during involving... more This study aims to investigate students' problem-solving abilities and responses during involving metacognitive strategy in learning. Methodology: This study used one group pre-test post-test design. The participants of this study were thirty-one first semester students of the Department of Mathematics Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. All participants have been enrolled in elementary mathematics courses. The data were collected by using tests and questionnaires. Before the first lesson has begun, students were given a pre-test to solve three contextual problems. Furthermore, the learning is carried out by integrating the metacognitive strategy for one and a half months. At the end of the lesson, the students were provided a post-test that consists of two contextual problems. Results:The result of the t-test showed that t-value =-7.937 < t-table =-2.0423. It can be concluded that there were significant differences between pre-test and post-test. Performance of the student's problem-solving abilities has increased after involving metacognitive strategy in learning with an average score of 73.5, compared to the pre-test with an average score of 47.9. Besides, students provide a positive response while engaging a metacognitive strategy in learning. Applications/Originality/Value: Involving metacognitive strategy in learning can enhance student's problem-solving abilities effectively.

This assumption is not entirely wrong because the average NEM value of elementary and middle school math is almost always located below the average value of the other lessons. The abstract nature of mathematics became the main obstacle to learning, especially for students who are still in the development of concrete or semi-concrete thinking. The situation is exacerbated by the use of methods which are still focused on the teacher (teacher center), not focused on students (child center) so that less activate students. Such conditions often found in schools both public and private. A reality that even when this has been attempted to improve the professionalism of teachers through workshops or upgrading, but the results can not be perceived by the public. Lesson study that is currently being developed in many universities believed to be able to increase the professionalism of teachers. Socialization and simulation results Leson Study conducted on January 13, 2010 against Elementary School teachers Gentan by the Development Team of Realistic Mathematic Education (RME) and Lesson Study-UMS concluded that: (1) The teachers were very enthusiastic and active during the socialization and stimulation, (2) The teachers want to know more about the RME and Lesson Study, (3) is hoping for a follow up such training so that teachers can implement lesson study in class, and (4) most teachers believe: by applying the approach RME through Lesson Study will help improve students' understanding of math that the edges will help improve academic achievement.

This study were in the frame of research and development method using qualitative approach. Subject of this research was the first year of undergraduate students of mathematics education department who took basic mathematics courses. Mathematics learning strategies in developing th character were designed in three stages to develop students character. The first stage was the inculcation. At this stage, lecturer facilitated students with activities that were able to raise awareness of the value of the character in learning. The second stage was Implementation where the lecturers facilitated student learning activities that fostered character value. However, the existing approach for teaching differential equity tends to be procedural. For this reason, the class of differential equity becomes not meaningful for students. Contextual teaching is one of the approach focuses on the students’ participation and process to find relation between material taught and real life. Through self discovery, it is expected that students experience meaningful learning. This research is the developing stage research by using contextual approach. The activities of students in contextual learning are elaborated in this research. The research aims at finding meaningful learning is not limited for procedural and analysis.

The study aims to 1) identify the teachers' problem to develop a development model of professiona... more The study aims to 1) identify the teachers' problem to develop a development model of professional teachers with a lesson study-based approach at Muhammadiyah Schools of Sukoharjo regency, 2) find an effective lesson study model as a development model of professional teachers, and 3) analyze a lesson study validation as a development model of professional teachers. The research used a phenomenology descriptive-qualitative method. The subjects included the students, teachers, principals, department head of education, and members of the Regional House of Representatives. The techniques of the data gathering employed the observation, documentation, and in-depth interview. The technique of the data analysis applied the first order understanding and second order understanding. It could be concluded that the four problems to improve the teachers' professionalism with a lesson study-based model are as follows: 1) internal, 2) external (teachers' commitment and concern), 3) an effective lesson study model based on a plan-do-see circle, collaboration, and collegial tutor, and 4) a lesson study validation in relation with the validations of open lesson and reflection, theory, and implementation.
